Are the well-fed less thirsty?Effects of drought and salinity on New Zealand mangroves

Despite a large number of studies examining the effects of abiotic stress factors on plants,the mechanistic explanations of drought-induced tree mortality remain inconclusive and even less is known about how multiple stressors *** role of non-structural carbohydrates(NSCs)in preventing or postponing drought mortality is gaining ***,we tested the role of NSCs in mitigating the effects of drought and salinity in New Zealand mangroves,Avicennia marina *** experimentally manipulated plant NSC levels,prior to subjecting them to combinations of drought and *** growth and survival rates were 2-and 3-fold higher in the high-NSC(H-NSC)group than in the low-NSC(L-NSC)group under high salinity and drought conditions,*** 12 weeks under high salinity-high drought conditions,the H-NSC group showed higher stem hydraulic conductivity(281±50 mmol cm^(−1)s^(−1)Mpa^(−1))compared with the L-NSC group(134±40 mmol cm^(−1)s^(−1)Mpa^(−1)).Although starch levels remained relatively constant,we found a 20%increase in soluble sugars in the stems of H-NSC group under high drought and high salinity in week 8 compared with week *** results suggest(i)an important role of NSCs in mitigating the effects of low soil water potential caused by drought and salinity,and(ii)sink-limited growth under conditions of combined salinity and drought.

Effect of vaccination,border testing,and quarantine requirements on the risk of COVID-19 in New Zealand:A modelling study

We couple a simple model of quarantine and testing strategies for international travellers with a model for transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a partly vaccinated *** use this model to estimate the risk of an infectious traveller causing a community outbreak under various border control strategies and different levels of vaccine coverage in the *** are calculated from N¼100,000 independent realisations of the stochastic *** find that strategies that rely on home isolation are significantly higher risk than the current mandatory 14-day stay in government-managed ***,combinations of testing and home isolation can still reduce the risk of a community outbreak to around one outbreak per 100 infected *** also find that,under some circumstances,using daily lateral flow tests or a combination of lateral flow tests and polymerase chain reaction(pCR)tests can reduce risk to a comparable or lower level than using pCR tests *** with controls on the number of travellers from countries with high prevalence of COVID-19,our results allow different options for managing the risk of COVID-19 at the border to be *** can be used to inform strategies for relaxing border controls in a phased way,while limiting the risk of community outbreaks as vaccine coverage increases.

A Novel Method for Resolving and Completing Authors' Country Affiliation Data in Bibliographic Records

purpose: Our work seeks to overcome data quality issues related to incomplete author affiliation data in bibliographic records in order to support accurate and reliable measurement of international research collaboration(IRC).Design/methodology/approch: We propose, implement, and evaluate a method that leverages the Web-based knowledge graph Wikidata to resolve publication affiliation data to particular countries. The method is tested with general and domain-specific data ***: Our evaluation covers the magnitude of improvement, accuracy, and consistency. Results suggest the method is beneficial, reliable, and consistent, and thus a viable and improved approach to measuring *** limitations: Though our evaluation suggests the method works with both general and domain-specific bibliographic data sets, it may perform differently with data sets not tested here. Further limitations stem from the use of the R programming language and R libraries for country identification as well as imbalanced data coverage and quality in Wikidata that may also change over *** implications: The new method helps to increase the accuracy in IRC studies and provides a basis for further development into a general tool that enriches bibliographic data using the Wikidata knowledge ***: This is the first attempt to enrich bibliographic data using a peer-produced, Webbased knowledge graph like Wikidata.

Here we report on a study that combined a scoping review with co-occurrence analysis to assess the current state of publications and research topics in the area of international research collaboration measurement(IRCM).Our study found that IRCM studies have been published in source titles of diverse subject areas and that there are two core research topics that have been commonly discussed across different subject areas in the IRCM domain-scientific productivity measurement and scientific impact *** appearance of papers about IRCM in venues beyond those concerned only with bibliometric measures indicates the broad importance of IRCM for diverse research subjects,and that studies of IRC within particular fields should draw on diverse venues to provide a holistic and interdisciplinary picture of IRCM.
