Extreme events as ecosystems drivers： Ecological consequences of anomalous Southern Hemisphere weather patterns during the 2001/2002 austral spring-summer

The frequency and severity of extreme events associated with global change are both forecast to increase with a concomitant increase expected in perturbations and disruptions of fundamental processes at ecosystem, community and population scales, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Extreme events should thus be viewed as ecosystem drivers, rather than as short term deviations from a perceived ＇norm＇. To illustrate this, we examined the impacts associated with the extraordinary weather pattern of the austral spring/summer of 2001/2002, and find that patterns of ocean-atmosphere interactions appear linked to a suite of extreme events in Antarctica and more widely across the Southern Hemisphere. In the Antarctic, the extreme events appear related to particular ecological impacts, including the substantial reduction in breeding success of Ade1ie penguins at sites in the Antarctic Peninsula as well as for Adelie penguin and snow petrel colonies in East Antarctica, and the creation of new benthic habitats associated with the disintegration of the Larsen B Ice Shelf. Other major impacts occurred in marine and terrestrial ecosystems at temperate and tropical latitudes. The suite of impacts demonstrates that ecological consequences of extreme events are manifested at fundamental levels in ecosystem processes and produce long-term, persistent effects relative to the short-term durations of the events. Changes in the rates of primary productivity, species mortality, community structure and inter-specific interactions, and changes in trophodynamics were observed as a consequence of the conditions during the 2001/2002 summer. Lasting potential consequences include reaching or exceeding tipping points, trophic cascades and regime shifts.

Genesis of the Binh Do Pb-Zn Deposit in Northern Vietnam:Evidence from H-O-S-Pb Isotope Geochemistry

The Binh Do Pb-Zn deposit in the Phu Luong region(Thai Nguyen Province,northern Vietnam)is located on the southern margin of the South China *** fault-controlled Pb-Zn orebodies are mainly hosted in Upper Paleozoic carbonate *** order to reveal the mineralization type and metallogenesis of this deposit,multi-isotopic(S,Pb,H and O)analyses on typical ore and gangue minerals were *** average ore sulfide δ^34 S∑S value is 4.3‰,suggestive of magmatic *** ore sulfide Pb isotope compositions are homogeneous,with the 206 Pb^204 Pb,207 Pb^204 Pb and 208 Pb^204 Pb values of 18.501 to 18.673,15.707 to 15.798,and 38.911 to 39.428,*** isotope model ages of the ore sulfides(240-220 Ma)are consistent with the timing of regional Triassic S-type granite emplacement(250-220 Ma),suggesting that the metals may have been *** quartz δDV-SMOW(-82.4‰ to-70.5‰)and δ^18 OH2 O(-0.4‰ to +6.4‰)values suggest that the ore-forming fluids were composed of mixed magmatic and meteoric *** with the geological features of the Pb-Zn deposit in the region,we propose that the Pb-Zn deposits belong to magmatic-hydrothermal type,rather than MVT-type as previously *** Triassic granites may have contributed the ore-forming material and heat that drove the hydrothermal *** ore-forming fluids may have migrated into interlayer faults and fractures of the carbonate strata,diluted by subsurface meteoric water and deposited successively the vein-type and stratiform-type Pb-Zn ores.

Population structure of Haliotis rubra from South Australia inferred from nuclear and mtDNA analyses

Microsatellite loci and mtDNA-RFLPs were surveyed in four spatially separated populations of Haliotis rubra and two populations of putative Haliotis conicorpora from South Australia. A high level of microsatellite genetic diversity was observed in all populations although several loci were characterized by homozygote excesses, probably due to null alleles. MtDNA variation was also moderate with an average of 80% haplotype variation across the six populations. Despite the high levels of genetic variation, significant pair-wise spatial differentiation is not detected among the populations. Hierarchical AMOVA analysis revealed very low levels of genetic partitioning on either a spatial or putative species level. Both molecular techniques revealed little genetic differentiation across the six populations, suggesting a panmictic population model for these South Australian abalone populations. Furthermore, no molecular evidence suggests that the putative H. conicorpora individuals sampled from South Australia belong to a separate species.

Middle Triassic Radiolarians from Cherts/Siliceous Shales in an Extensional Basin in the Sukhothai Fold Belt,Northern Thailand

More than thirty species of radiolarians are described from maroon chert and siliceous shales from the Den Chai and Santisuk sections in the east of the Sukhothai fold belt. The fauna obtained from Den Chai comprises Muelleritortis cochleata cochleata, M. cochleata tumidospina, M. expansa, Triassocampe deweveri, T. coronata, T. scalaris, Annulotriassocampe companilis, A. multisegmantatus, A. sulovensis, Pseudostylosphaera coccostyla coccostyla, P. imperspicua, Canoptum inornatus, C. levis, Corum kraineri, Spongoserrula rarauana, Orbiculiforma karnica and others. The assemblage may be correlated with those reported in the Fang-Chiang Dao and Lumphun areas in the north of Thailand and in the ChangningMenglian belt of western Yunnan, South China and suggests a late Ladinian（Middle Triassic） age. The radiolarian fauna from the Santisuk Section comprises Muelleritortis cochleata cochleata, M. sp., Striatotrissocampe nodosoannulata, Triassocampe. deweveri, T. sp., Pseudogodia？ sp., Pseudostylosphaera coccostyla coccostyla, Archaeocenosphera sp., Annulotriassocampe multisegmantis, Pseudostylosphaera sp., and others which indicates a late Ladinian age. Middle Triassic radiolarian chert and siliceous shale from Den Chai and Santisuk are interpreted as having been deposited in an extensional continental margin within the Sukhothai fold belt and not in the Devonian–Permian back-arc basin of the Nan suture. These deep marine sequences were deposited in a subsiding continental margin in the Lampang-Phrae Basin. We consider these sequences to be part of the Hong Hoi Formation（Anisian–Ladinian） of the Lampang Group which, in turn, may be compared to the Choushui Formation and other associated Middle Triassic formations in the Simao Basin of South China.

In this paper we demonstrate that the dominantfrequencies and Lipschitz exponents in non-stationarv andtransitory power quality disturbances. effciently extractedfrom their wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM)in the time-scale domain. can serve as powerfuldiscriminating features for wavelet-based classification ofthese disturbances. We also propose a comprehensive"Knowledge-based" algorithm for the training of the radialbasis function (RBF) network classifier so that at itsconvergence. the network gives both the optimal featureweight vector as well as the cluster centres and scalingwidths.

Objective As the third most important copper polymetallic metallogenic belt in Tibet, the Bangongco-Nujiang metallogenic belt （BNMB） has attracted much attention among geoscientists all over the world （Lin Bin et al., 2017a）. There are two ore clusters in the westem of BNMB, the Duolong giant porphyry-epitherrnal Cu （Au, Ag） ore cluster and the Ga＇erqiong-Galalelarge porphyry- skarn Cu （Au） ore cluster （Lin Bin et al., 2017a; 2017b）. Now, the latest exploration advances show that the Kuga project is the first economic porphyry-skam copper deposit in the eastern of BNMB, with over 0.4 Mt melt copper （333＋334） @ 0.9%. However, the Kuga deposit is poorly studied about its diagenetic age. In this study, we present a zircon U-Pb LA-ICP-MS dating of ore-bearing biotite granite, in order to identify the time of the ore- related magmatism and reveal the relationship with the westem of BNMB.

Modeling calving process of glacier with dilated polyhedral discrete element method

Mass loss caused by glacier calving is one of the direct contributors to global sea level *** calving laws are required for accurate modelling of ice sheet mass *** continuous and discontinuous methods have been used for glacial calving *** this study,the discrete element method(DEM)based on dilated polyhedral elements is introduced to simulate the calving process of a tidewater *** polyhedrons can be obtained from the Minkowski sum of a sphere and a core *** elements can be utilized to generate a continuum ice material,where the interaction force between adjacent elements is modeled by constructing bonds at the joints of the common faces.A hybrid fracture model considering fracture energy is *** viscous creep behavior of glaciers on long-term scales is not *** applying buoyancy and gravity to the modelled glacier,DEM results show that the calving process is caused by cracks which are initialized at the top of the glacier and spread to the *** results demonstrate the feasibility of using the dilated polyhedral DEM method in glacier simulations,additionally allowing the fragment size of the breaking fragments to be *** relationship between crack propagation and internal stress in the glacier is analyzed during calving *** the analysis of the Mises stress and the normal stress between the elements,it is found that geometric changes caused by the glacier calving lead to the redistribution of the *** tensile stress between the elements is the main influencing factor of glacier ice *** addition,the element shape,glacier base friction and buoyancy are studied,the results show that the glacier model based on the dilated polyhedral DEM is sensitive to the above conditions.

Asynchronous consensus for optimal power flow control in smart grid with zero power mismatch

The heterogeneous nature of smart grid components and the desire for smart grids to be scalable,stable and respect customer privacy have led to the need for more distributed control paradigms. In this paper we provide a distributed optimal power flow solution for a smart distribution network with separable global costs, separable non-convex constraints, and inseparable linear constraints,while considering important aspects of network operation such as distributed generation and load mismatch, and nodal voltage constraints. An asynchronous averaging consensus protocol is developed to estimate the values of inseparable global information. The consensus protocol is then combined with a fully distributed primal dual optimization utilizing an augmented Lagrange function to ensure convergence to a feasible solution with respect to power flow and power mismatch constraints. The presented algorithm uses only local and neighbourhood communication to simultaneously find the mismatch between power generation, line loss and loads, to calculate nodal voltages,and to minimize distributed costs, leading to a completely distributed solution of the global problem. An IEEE test feeder system with a reasonable number of nodes is used to illustrate the proposed method and efficiency.
