An examination of the population dynamics of syngnathid fishes within tampa Bay,Florida,USA

Seagrass ecosystems worldwide have been declining, leading to a decrease in associated fish populations, especially those with low mobility such as syngnathids （pipefish and seahorses）. This two-year pilot study investigated seasonal patterns in density, growth, site fidelity, and population dynamics of tampa Bay （FL） syngnathid fishes at a site adjacent to two marinas under construction. Using a modified mark-recapture technique, fish were collected periodically from three closely located sites that varied in seagrass species （Thalassia spp., Syringodium spp., and mixed-grass sites） and their distance from open water, but had consistent physical/chemical environmental characteristics. Fish were marked, photographed for body size and gender measurements, and released the same day at the capture site. Of the 5695 individuals surveyed, 49 individuals were recaptured, indicating a large, flexible population. Population density peaks were observed in July of both years, with low densities in late winter and late summer. Spatially, syngnathid densities were highest closest to the mouth of the bay and lowest near the shoreline. Seven species of syngnathid fishes were observed, and species-specific patterns of seagrass use emerged during the study. However, only two species, Syngnathus scovelli and Hippoeampus zosterae, were observed at high frequencies. For these two species, body size decreased across the study period, but while S. scovelli＇s population density decreased, H. zosterae＇s increased. Across six of the seven species, population size declined over the course of this preliminary study; however, seasonal shifts were impossible to distinguish from potential anthropogenic effects of construction [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 118-133, 2010].

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and it is ranked the second most frequent cause of cancer associated mortality in the western countries(1).Around 50%of colorectal cancer patients eventually develop liver metastases and when left untreated,colorectal liver metastasis(CLM)leads to only 31%survival rate at 1 year,7.9%at 2 years,2.6%at 3 years and 0.9%at 4 years(2).While complete surgical resection via hepatectomy is the accepted gold standard,thermal ablation has been used as an alternative or adjunctive treatment in patients with *** use of thermal ablation for treatment of CLM can vary based on the local practice and individual referral pattern,however it is important to understand the proper utilization of this technology as well as its important clinical aspects.

Evaluating COVID-19’s impacts on Puerto Rican’s travel behaviors

The COVID-19 pandemic has completely disrupted and possibly permanently changed the way humans *** Puerto Rico,major travel restrictions to the island have persisted at different levels since March 2020,which heavily influenced residents’travel ***,it remains unclear about how big the impact is and how inequitable it might *** goal of this study is to evaluate COVID-19’s impacts on Puerto Rican’s travel behaviors by analyzing travel flows from Puerto Rico to the contiguous US with a modified gravity *** roles of socioeconomic factors regarding the Puerto Rican travelers and COVID-19 factors regarding the destination US states have been ***-19 was a strong deterring factor of travel at the beginning of the pandemic and also in the winter of 2020,but it did not keep Puerto Ricans from traveling during the summer 2020 when most travel restrictions were *** found that the elderly population of Puerto Rico,despite being more vulnerable to COVID-19,were much more likely to travel during the *** also found that,during the holiday season in 2020,some socioeconomically disadvantaged populations were more likely to be traveling,a direct contradiction to their travel flows the year *** findings shed light on about how disproportionately affected populations behavior changed from pre-pandemic to after the pandemic *** the continuance of the pandemic,this information is extremely valuable for future planning with respect to emergency management,travel regulation,and social benefit.

As an emerging new research area, DNA computation, or more generallybiomolecular computation, extends into other fields such as nanotechnology and material design, andis developing into a new sub-discipline of science and engineering. This paper provides a briefsurvey of some concepts and developments in this area. In particular several approaches aredescribed for biomolecular solutions of the satisfiability problem (using bit strands, DNA tiles andgraph self-assembly). Theoretical models such as the primer splicing systems as well as the recentmodel of forbidding and enforcing are also described. We review some experimental results ofself-assembly of DNA nanostructures and nanomechanical devices as well as the design of anautonomous finite state machine.

Background:Compared to the general population,cancer patients are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality following SARS-CoV-2 *** immune response to a two-dose regimen ofmRNA vaccines in cancer patients is generally lower than in immunocompetent *** doses may meaningfully augment immune response in this *** conducted an observational study with the primary objective of determining the immunogenicity of vaccine dose three(100μg)of mRNA-1273 among cancer patients and a secondary objective of evaluating safety at 14 and 28 ***:The mRNA-1273 vaccine was administered~7 to 9 months after administering two vaccine doses(i.e.,the primary series).Immune responses(enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay[ELISA])were assessed 28 days post-dose *** events were collected at days 14(±5)and 28(+5)post-dose *** exact or X^(2)tests were used to compare SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity rates,and paired t-tests were used to compare SARS-CoV-2 antibody geometric mean titers(GMTs)across different time ***:Among 284 adults diagnosed with solid tumors or hematologic malignancies,dose three of mRNA-1273 increased the percentage of patients seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 antibody from 81.7%pre-dose three to 94.4%28 days post-dose *** increased 19.0-fold(15.8-22.8).Patients with lymphoid cancers or solid tumors had the lowest and highest antibody titers post-dose three,*** responses after dose three were reduced among those who received anti-CD20 antibody treatment,had lower total lymphocyte counts and received anticancer therapy within 3 *** patients seronegative for SARS-CoV-2 antibody pre-dose three,69.2%seroconverted after dose three.A majority(70.4%)experienced mostly mild,transient adverse reactions within 14 days of dose three,whereas severe treatment-emergent events within 28 days were very rare(<2%).Conclusion:Dose three of the mRNA-1273 vaccine was well-tolerated and augmented SAR

GLOBAL DYNAMICS OF DISSIPATIVE GENERALIZED KORTEWEG-DE VRIES EQUATIONS

This work deals with the dissipative generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equations of the formu t + u 2u x + u xxx-bu xx+ ru = f, t≥0, u(0,x) = u 0(x)∈V = H 2 2π,with periodic boundary conditions. It is proved that there exists an inertial manifold for the semiflow generated by this equation in space V. Since such a manifold is finite dimensional, positively invariant, and exponentially attracting of all the solution trajectories, the long-time dynamics of the dissipative gKdV equations are determined by a finite number of modes without the soliton phenomena.

Jejunal diverticulosis found in a patient with long-standing pneumoperitoneum and pseudo-obstruction on imaging:a case report

Small bowel diverticulosis is a rare finding within the general population and jejunal diverticulosis,specifically,is even *** manifestations can range from post-prandial pain,constipation and malabsorption to serious complications,such as gastro-intestinal hemorrhage,perforation and acute intestinal *** we describe the case of an 81-yearold gentleman who presented with a three-year history of abdominal pain and weight *** unremarkable physical examination and laboratory tests,persistent pneumoperitoneum and dilated loops of small bowel were found on *** been given a diagnosis of small bowel bacterial overgrowth,the patient underwent capsule endoscopy study for further evaluation of his small *** capsule did not reach the colon and the patient never noted passing the capsule in his stool so,six months post-procedure,a computed tomography(CT)scan seemed to reveal the retained *** exploratory laparotomy revealed 200 cm of atonic,dilated jejunum with impressive diverticula along the antimesenteric *** case report is an example of an unusual set of presenting signs and symptoms of jejunal diverticulosis,including persistent pneumoperitoneum,pseudo-obstruction and small bowel bacterial overgrowth.A literature review has revealed that these signs have been present in other cases of jejunal diverticulosis,although the etiology and pathophysiology is not clearly understood.
