In taiwan, many groups engage in the development of TiNi SMAs. The two-stage martensitic transformations of and have been clarified for both TiNi binary and ternary alloys. The deformation behaviors have been investigated by cold-rolling, hot-rolling and wire drawing. Both shape memory effect and pseudoelasticity can be improved by some thermal-mechanical treatments. The damping characteristics of TiNi and TiNiX SMAs have also been systematically studied. Both B19'/B19 martensite (M)and R-phase(R) have high daming capacities due to the stress-induced movement of twin boundaries. Meanwhile, the addition of third elements-Fe and Cu-can largely increase the damping capacity.Recently, some high temperature shape memory alloys-TiHiPd and TiNi-.Au alloys-have also been intensively studied in taiwan. All these potential investigations on the TiNi SMAs in taiwan have attracted much attention and their important characteristics will be applied widely in the near future.

In north of taiwan the East China Sea Shelf extends from the coastline of China's Mainland to the southern Okinawa Trough, showing a shelf-slope-basin bathymetric profile. Sea floor of the East China Sea Shelf is generally smooth and flat. It is wide (230 km) and relatively shallow with an average shelf-break depth of 120 m, reflecting the effect of Quaternary glaciation about 15000 years ago. The Pliocene-Quaternary East China Sea Shelf is underlain by thin sequences of about 1000 m thick shallow marine sediments mainly derived from China, forming an eastward dipping sedimentary wedge due to regional tilting and subsidence and representing the youngest part of the Cenozoic rift margin in southeastern China. The taiwan Strait Shelf has two phases in development: one is the early phase of the Paleo-cene-Miocene rift margin and the other is the late stage of the Pliocene-Quaternary foreland sedi-mentation. It is a foreland shelf and its present morphology results from the combined effects of tectonic subsidence and sedimentation overprinting that of the Late Pleistocene glaciation about 15000 years ago.Southeast of the taiwan Strait Shelf lies the very narrow Kaoping Shelf along the southwest-ern taiwan coast. The island shelf is a short, narrow and shallow shelf (100 km long, 20 km wide and 80 m deep). Progradation of Quaternary orogenic sediments from the taiwan orogen forms the present island shelf off southwest taiwan. The shelf represents the early stage of foreland basin sedimentation.The transition from a passive margin shelf (East China Sea Shelf), a foreland shelf (taiwan Strait Shelf) to an island shelf (Kaoping Shelf) along the strike of the fold-and-thrust belt of taiwan mainly reflects the oblique collision between the Luzon Arc and the Chinese margin from Pliocene to the present. The accompanying uplift of taiwan orogen, foreland-basin sedimentation, and sea level changes contribute to the formation of these three different shelves adjacent to taiwan.

Forest plant roots may restrain the occurrence of shallow landslides for forest land and pioneer tree species can alsoreduce runoff and soil erosion;thus they are useful practical ecological materials for landslide control and erosion control.Inthis study,two important pioneer plant species;Formosan Alder(Alnus formosana Makino) and Roxburgh Sumac(Rhuschinensis Mill.Var.roxburghi i(DC.) Rehd.) were selected at landslide areas under vegetation treatments for soil and waterconservation.In order to obtain the root strength model for the factors affecting pulling resistance and root tensile strength,experimental materials were tested and the data were analyzed using regression techniques.These models could be used toprovide the index of slope stability and to quantify the root-strength using non-destructive methods.

Surface pollen from various montane vegeta-tions in Shalixian Mt. and Lepei Mt. of central and northern taiwan have been explored and analyzed. The pollen datawere used to simulate vegetation types by using the biomisa-tion technique. Computing three matrixes of pollen taxa,plant functional types and combined biomes, vegetation types at each site have been finally defined through the fuzselections of a tie-breaking rule. The results show that sur-face pollen data can simulate the subtropical Castanopsis andCyclobalanopsis forests, alpine warm-temperate Quercus and Quercus-Pinus forests, and alpine temperate/cool-temperate conifers of Tsuga-Picea and Picea-Abies forests. Simulatedelevations of the forests are similar to actual locations of the forests. This study can add vertical surface pollen data forextending investigation of various vegetation types in China, provide PFT schemes and vegetation types in low-latitude and montane areas, and be applied as modern analogues for fossil pollen in order to reconstruct Quaternary

Benign nontraumatic inflammatory stricture of the common bile duct (CBD) may result in obstructive jaundice, which can be misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor of the CBD preoperatively. Two cases with strictures of the mid portion of the common bile duct presenting with obstructive jaundice are reported herein. Preoperative radiological studies prompted us to confidently make the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma. However, the postoperative diagnosis on histological examination of the resected lesions was chronic inflammation and fibrosis. The complications of chronic duodenal ulcer are considered as the etiology of these two disorders.

This study sets up two new merit functions,which are minimized for the detection of real eigenvalue and complex eigenvalue to address nonlinear eigenvalue problems.For each eigen-parameter the vector variable is solved from a nonhomogeneous linear system obtained by reducing the number of eigen-equation one less,where one of the nonzero components of the eigenvector is normalized to the unit and moves the column containing that component to the right-hand side as a nonzero input vector.1D and 2D golden section search algorithms are employed to minimize the merit functions to locate real and complex eigenvalues.Simultaneously,the real and complex eigenvectors can be computed very accurately.A simpler approach to the nonlinear eigenvalue problems is proposed,which implements a normalization condition for the uniqueness of the eigenvector into the eigenequation directly.The real eigenvalues can be computed by the fictitious time integration method(FTIM),which saves computational costs compared to the one-dimensional golden section search algorithm(1D GSSA).The simpler method is also combined with the Newton iterationmethod,which is convergent very fast.All the proposed methods are easily programmed to compute the eigenvalue and eigenvector with high accuracy and efficiency.

Background and purpose To analyse the long-term risk of ischaemic stroke and the clinical effects of antithrombotics on the risk of haemorrhagic stroke in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a population-based database taken from taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database.Patients with SLE between 2000 and 2008 were registered and matched with two controls by the index date,age,gender and Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI).These subjects were followed until either stroke event or 31 December 2013.Adjusted HRs(aHRs)for strokes were estimated with Cox regression models,and the cumulative incidence of ischaemic stroke was analysed by log-rank test and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.Results In total,8310 patients with SLE and 16620 patients without SLE were included.In general,patients with SLE had higher rates of ischaemic stroke(5.4%vs 3.3%)and haemorrhagic stroke(1.5%vs 0.6%)than in controls.In multivariate analysis adjusted to age,gender,CCI,urbanisation level and antithrombotics uses,aHRs of all strokes,ischaemic stroke and haemorrhagic stroke were 1.73(95%CI:1.54 to 1.94),1.65(95%CI:1.45 to 1.87)and 2.24(95%CI:1.71 to 2.95),respectively,in patients with SLE.Patients with SLE were significantly more likely to suffer ischaemic stroke than patients without SLE,even 10 years after SLE diagnosis(6.12%vs 3.50%,p<0.001).Antiplatelet use increased the risk of haemorrhagic stroke in SLE group(aHR=1.74,95%CI:1.18 to 2.57).Conclusions Patients with SLE are at greater risk of developing ischaemic stroke that lasts for 10 years.Antiplatelets should be carefully administered to prevent cardiovascular events in patients with SLE due to the risk of haemorrhagic stroke.

The Coastal Zone Management Act was finally promulgated in 2015,while Ministry of the Interior was asked to draft a coastal management act in 1991 by Executive Yuan.It was until the government’s lifting of martial law in 1987,vigorous activities started prevailing on coastal areas.And relevant legal documents were on sea reclamation for development in the 1980’s by Council of Agriculture.The approval of“taiwan Coastal Area Natural Environment Protection Plan”showed an era of environmental protection in 1980s.However,it was surely not market driven,similar to land development,but some efforts by the administration systems.Through all the years,the efforts were put on drafting plans and these efforts were not quite sounding.The coastal disasters and further climate change caught the attention of relevant NGOs,scholars,politicians,and the society.At the critical juncture the government was made to react to outside demands.And then the Coastal Zone Management Act was passed by Legislative Yuan,establishing an integrated coastal management system in taiwan.As such,it is proposed to look into this long process of the attempt with the concept of institutional change in order to understand this coastal environmental preservation and protection issue in a broader scope.

Optimal Shape Factor and Fictitious Radius in the MQ-RBF:Solving Ill-Posed Laplacian Problems

To solve the Laplacian problems,we adopt a meshless method with the multiquadric radial basis function(MQRBF)as a basis whose center is distributed inside a circle with a fictitious radius.A maximal projection technique is developed to identify the optimal shape factor and fictitious radius by minimizing a merit function.A sample function is interpolated by theMQ-RBF to provide a trial coefficient vector to compute the merit function.We can quickly determine the optimal values of the parameters within a preferred rage using the golden section search algorithm.The novel method provides the optimal values of parameters and,hence,an optimal MQ-RBF;the performance of the method is validated in numerical examples.Moreover,nonharmonic problems are transformed to the Poisson equation endowed with a homogeneous boundary condition;this can overcome the problem of these problems being ill-posed.The optimal MQ-RBF is extremely accurate.We further propose a novel optimal polynomial method to solve the nonharmonic problems,which achieves high precision up to an order of 10^(−11).
