Facility records of 320 tb （tuberculosis） patients were examined over a one-year-period; January-December 2009 to ascertain the screening of children under 6 years of age who have had contacts with sputum smear positive tb patients as stipulated in the NtbLCP （National Tuberculosis and leprosy control Program） guidelines. In addition, semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 28 DOTS （directly-observed treatment strategy） clinicians to elicit information to help explain findings from the analysis of the routine data. Over 60% of children less than 6 years of age who had contacts with tb patients were not investigated in the health facilities included in the survey. The level of educational attainment of DOTS providers was associated with the screening of tb patients＇ contacts （P = 0.008）. Forgetfulness by clinicians to ask for or screen children of tb patients in the facilities is the singular most important factor undermining contact investigation. The proportion of under 6 years tb contacts screened or not screened for tb in the facilities was similar according to the age and gender of tb patients, and the type of health facilities where treatment was accessed by patients （P = 0.325）. The study underscored the need for the state program to evaluate the quality of service provision as well as counseling provided to tb patients at the facilities.

Objective To establish a multiplex polymerase chain reaction （M-PCR） assay for simultaneous detection of pathogens causing genital ulcer disease （GUD）. Mothods Based on the gene-specific region of the following pathogens： Chlamydia trachomatis omp l/ompb, herpes simplex virus （HSV） DNA polymerase, Treponema pollidum tpp47, Haemophilus ducreyi 16s rRNA, four sets of primers were designed and an M-PCR assay was developed to detect four pathogens in one test. The assay was evaluated with diagnostic result of golden standard for each pathogen.Results Of the 51 clinical samples, M-PCR showed slightly higher positive rate （47.1%） of HSV than cell culture （23.6%）. Meanwhile, the positive rate of T. pallidum detected by M-PCR and dark-field microscopy was 19.6% （10/51） and 15.7% （8/51）, respectively. Only one sample was positive for H. ducreyi and no sample was positive for C. trachomatis detected by both M-PCR assay and culture. Conclusion This primary study indicated that M-PCR assay can simultaneously and rapidly detect the four etiologic pathogens causing GUD.

Theoretical calculations of proton emission half-lives based on a deformed Gamow-like model

Objective To evaluate the psychological status prior to surgical operation and the expectation towards surgical outcomes among PALs with disability. Method A total of 937 cases in nine provinces,which were covered by the China national commonweal funded surgical camps, were surveyed by a structure questionnaire designed by the Department of leprosy control and Rehabilitation in the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences（CAMS） Institute of Dermatology. Results Reasons for the patients to refuse the surgical operation included concerns in medical cost（79.19%）, unawareness of the free medical surgery program（64.78%）, scaring of surgery（48.88%）, unwilling to exposure their disabilities（46.43%）, unwilling to exposure their history of leprosy（45.57%）, despairing with disability（43.86%）, having no ideas on surgical results（37.46%）, beliefs of that disability is an inevitable outcome of the disease（32.98%）, and use of aging to reject the operation（30.63%）. More than 90% of PALs who are willing to accept surgery expected that surgery can improve their physical ability and they may contribute more to their family or become less independent after surgery;however, they did not expect much on returning to their original work after surgery. Conclusion For those PALs with disabilities, it is especially necessary to have a good communication and establish good relationship with them prior to conducting the surgical operation in order to understand their psychological status and timely deal with their individual psychological problems.

Background:China’s national tuberculosis control program(NTP)provides free,first-line anti-tuberculosis(tb)drugs to pulmonary tb *** treatment regimen follows the World Health Organization’s(WHO)*** objective of this paper is to evaluate the current status of anti-tb drug use for newly diagnosed pulmonary tb inpatients treated in prefecture-and county-level designated ***:Three prefecture-level hospitals and nine county-level hospitals were selected for the *** newly diagnosed pulmonary tb inpatient medical records from 2012 were reviewed and doubly examined by two national senior *** rational use of anti-tb drugs was evaluated based on criteria in line with WHO’s ***:Of the 2,060 total treatment regimens for tb,53.1%were found to be rational(1093/2060).The percentages in prefecture-level and county-level hospitals were 50.3%(761/1513)and 60.7%(332/547),*** difference between the two levels of hospitals was statistically significant(Chi-square value=17.44,P<0.01).The percentages of rational treatment regimens for first-time hospitalizations and for two or more hospitalizations were 59.5%(983/1653)and 27.0%(110/407),respectively,with a statistically significant difference(Chi-square value=138.00,P<0.01).The overall use of second-line drugs(SLD)was 54.9%(1131/2060).The percentages for prefecture-level and county-level hospitals were 50.6%(766/1513)and 66.7%(365/547),respectively.A statistically significant difference was found(Chi-square value=42.06,P<0.01).The use of SLD for inpatients hospitalized once and inpatients hospitalized twice or more was 58.4%(966/1653)and 40.5%(165/407),respectively,with a statistically significant difference(Chi-square value=42.26,P<0.01).Conclusions:Half of inpatients might be treated with irrational regimens,and the use of SLD was more appropriately dispensed in city-level hospitals than in county-level *** and guidelines for health personnel,

Since the sexually transmitted diseases were recognizedas a public health problem in China during the early1980’s, the incidence of syphilis has graduallyincreased. Though there have been case reports ofclinical variants of neurosyphilis, including syphiliticcerebrospinal meningitis or meningomyelitis andmeningovascular syphilis, occurring in different regions ofChina,tabes dorsalis or tabetic neurosyphilis has notyet been reported in China. Here, we report a young manwith rapidly progressive tabetic neurosyphilis admitted toour hospital in October 1999.
