Application of Design of Experiments for AlloyDevelopment of an Aluminum Copper Casting Alloy

Design of experiments (DoE) based on a linear regression model was used to develop an Aluminum Copper-based casting alloy. The main objectives of the development were the achievement of (1) a high strength at elevated temperatures with (2) a low hot tearing tendency. Within the DoE, 17 different chemical compositions of the newly developed alloy AlCuMnCo(Ni) were cast, tested regarding hot tearing tendency and characterized in tensile tests up to 300 °C. Test results showed that the AlCuMnCo(Ni)-alloys from the DoE have high mechanical properties from ambient temperature up to 300 °C and thus feature a high thermal stability. It was found that the alloying elements Cu and Co increase the yield strength whereas Mn and Ni tend to increase the attainable elongation. Furthermore, some of the alloys showed no or a very low tendency to hot tearing a remarkable feature for Al-Cu alloys which are otherwise highly susceptible to hot tearing. The regression model that was developed from the test results fulfils a set of quality criteria and is therefore expected to provide reliable predictions. The predictive ability of the model was validated by casting and testing a sweet spot alloy. Results show that the model is sufficient for predicting the mechanical properties from ambient temperature to 250 °C. Furthermore, the sweet spot alloy surpasses the reference alloy AlCuNiCoSbZr (RR30) in its mechanical properties up to 250 °C. It was shown that by applying design of experiments, time and effort for an alloy development can effectively be reduced and simultaneously a high degree of information density about the alloying system considered is generated.

Influence of Cu9Al4 Phase on Nanomechanical Behavior of Cu-14Al-4Ni-xTi Shape Memory Alloy Rapidly Solidified

This paper aims to verify the Cu9Al4 phase influence on the nanomechanical behavior of the Cu-14Al-4Ni-xTi alloy obtained by rapid solidification with addition of different amounts of *** the Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM),Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy(EDS)and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD),it was possible to perform the samples’microstructural *** addition,the reduction of the Cu9Al4 phase precipitation and the X-phase appearance were verified according to the increase of the titanium percentage *** nanomechanical behavior was evaluated by nanoindentation tests,which showed a significant decrease of the elastic modules and an increase of the Poisson coefficient’s according to the titanium *** research establishes that the reduction of Cu9Al4 phase implies on the increase of the capacity to dissipate ***,the high damping capacity combined with the X-phase presence increases the super elasticity and the alloy ductility.

One-Step Synthesis and Characterization of a Nanocomposite Based on Carbon Nanotubes/Aluminum and Its Reinforcement Effect on the Metal Matrix

The nanocomposite based on carbon nanotubes/aluminum (CNT/Al) was one-step prepared by the DC arc discharge method under an argon/acetone mixed atmosphere. Synthesis was performed by arc plasma on a pure graphite rod, filled by aluminum powder as an anode and aluminum plate as a cathode. Discharge conditions of 85 A and 20 V were used at a pressure range of 375 to 750 Torr. The CNT/Al was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy; Transmission Electron Microscopy; Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analysis; X-Ray Diffraction; Raman Spectroscopy; Thermogravimetric Analysis; and, its reinforcement effect of the CNTs on the aluminum matrix was measured by Vickers microhardness test. This nanocomposite shows agglomerates of multiwalled carbon nanotubes filled with Al4C3 and blended with aluminum particles; moreover, in the nanocomposites was found a hardness increase of 40% for nanocomposites with 1.0 wt.% of CNT/Al.

Incubation of PbSe Thin Films in a Tin(Ⅱ) Salt Aqueous Solution:Modification and Ion-Exchange Reactions

Topochemical ion-exchange reactions between solid micro- and nanostructured metal chalcogenides and aqueous salt solutions are generally used for formation of composite structures based on initial metal chalcogenides and products of their ion-exchange transformation. However, ion exchange has promises as a route to obtaining both composites and solid solutions based on the initial and the end chalcogenide phases. With the help of the ion-exchange technique, single-phase films of Phi xSnxSe substitutional solid solutions with a tin content up to -2 at.%, which are promising for mid- and long-wavelength infrared radiation （IR） optoelectronics, have been obtained at the interface between PbSe poly- crystalline thin films and SnCl2 aqueous solutions containing sodium citrate. It has been shown that the pH value and temperature of the reaction system play an important role in the ion-exchange process. Incubation of lead selenide （PbSe） films in a tin（II） salt aqueous solution also leads to their modification with oxygen-containing tin compounds to a depth of-3 nm. Differences in the film structure, such as changes in the coherent scattering region sizes and orientation of crystallites along the [220] direction, which arise during the contact with citrate-containing SnCl2 solutions, have also been revealed. For the first time, an idea of the existence of a relatively wide reaction zone of an intragranular topochemical ion-exchange reaction in an aqueous solution, within which substitutional solid solutions can form in micro- and nanostructured systems, has been set forth.

Cementitious Composites Containing Multifunctional Sugarcane Fibres

This work investigates the reuse of natural(SCB)and minopropyltriethoxysilanemodifed(MSCB)sugarcane bagasse fbres in cementitious *** bagasse fbres are pre-used in the treatment of motor oil contaminated effluents.A full factorial design is used to identify the effects of fbre type(SCB and MSCB),fbre length(0.6 and 1.2 mm),fbre amount(1 and 2 wt%)and fbre condition(before and after oil filtration)on apparent density,water absorption,apparent porosity,ultra-pulse velocity,dynamic modulus,flexural strength and *** fibres lead to increased apparent density compared to MSCB fibre reinforced *** fibres contribute to reduce composite porosity,leading to higher mechanical *** smaller area of MSCB fibres promotes a larger amount of cementitious phase per unit volume,thus increasing the strength of the *** sugarcane fbres(1.2 mm)have a larger surface area,leading to a higher fibre concentration per unit volume,which increases water *** amount of fibre has no significant effect on mechanical and physical *** made with 2 wt%0.6 mm long MSCB fibres achieve promising results for non-structural civil engineering applications.

Solving the Perennial Problems of Inadequate Physical laboratories in Africa Through the Use of Virtual Reality technology and Tools

The major restriction for learning in science and engineering education in Africa is the absence of equipped laboratories. Where laboratory is available, there is the problem of obsolete and antiquated materials, which are seldom available for use. In most Universities in Africa, there is inadequate supply of laboratory space and laboratory materials. The laboratories only have the items of equipment that were provided when the universities were established, this has hampered learning. An alternative educational approach is required to address the aforementioned problems and provide a cost-effective solution for education as well as a valuable complementary or learning tool for university students. The alternative approach is the use of Virtual Reality （VR） technology to simulate virtual learning environments such as virtual reality laboratories. This is a one solution to inadequate physical laboratories in Africa.
