Progresses in restoration of post-mining landscape in Africa

Mining alters the natural landscape and discharges large volumes of wastes that pose serious pollution hazards to the environment, to human health and to agriculture. As a result, the recent 2 decades have witnessed a global surge in research on post-mining landscape restoration, yielding a suite of techniques including physical, chemical, biological(also known as phytoremediation) and combinations. Despite the long history of mining in Africa, no systematic review has summarized advances in restoration research and practices after mining disturbance. Thus, the aim of this review was to document the state-of-knowledge and identify gaps in restoration of postmining landscape in Africa through literature review. We found that:(1) there has been substantial progress in identifying species suitable for phytoremediation;(2) few studies evaluated the feasibility of organic amendments to promote autochthonous colonization of mine wastelands or growth of planted species; and(3) restoration of limestone quarries in Kenya, sand mining tailings in South Africa,and gold mine wasteland in Ghana are successful cases of large-scale post-mining restoration practices in ***, the pace of post-mining landscape restoration research and practice in Africa is sluggish compared to other parts of the global south. We recommend:(1)mainstreaming the restoration of mine wastelands in national research strategies and increased development planning to make the mining sector ‘‘Green'';(2) inventory of the number, area, and current status of abandoned mine lands;(3) expanding the pool of candidate species for phytostabilization;(4) further evaluating the phytostabilization potential of organic amendments, e.g., biochar;(5)assessing the impacts of mining on regional biodiversity.

Solution Blowing of Poly(dimethylsiloxane)/Nylon 6 Nanofiber Mats for Protective Applications

A new strategy was developed to fabricate superhydrophobic nylon 6 nanofibers, in which the blend solutions of poly（dimethylsiloxane）（PDMS） prepolymer and nylon 6 was spun using an innovative solution blowing process, and then the PDMS prepolymer contianning nanofibers were cured to obtain PDMS/nylon 6 nanofiber mats. Morphology, surface composition, non-wetting property and protective performance were investigated. The results showed that the addition of PDMS prepolymer improved the spinnability of the spinning solutions, and the PDMS/nylon 6 nanofibers had smooth surfaces and diameters from 100 nm to 350 nm. The presence of PDMS effectively enhanced the hydrophobicity of the nanofiber mats, showing water contact angles of 132° to 161° for PDMS contents of 1 wt% to 3 wt%. The PDMS/nylon 6 mats also possessed excellent protective and transport properties. The results indicated the potential application of the novel nanofiber mats in protective clothing.

Emerging open-channel droplet arrays for biosensing

Open-channel droplet arrays have attracted much attention in the fields of biochemical analysis,biofluid monitoring,biomarker recognition and cell interactions,as they have advantages with regard to miniaturization,parallelization,high-throughput,simplicity and *** droplet arrays not only improve the sensitivity and accuracy of a biosensor,but also do not require sophisticated equipment or tedious processes,showing great potential in next-generation miniaturized sensing *** review summarizes typical examples of open-channel micro droplet arrays and focuses on diversified biosensing integrated with multiple signal-output approaches(fluorescence,colorimetric,surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS),electrochemical,etc.).The limitations and development prospects of open-channel droplet arrays in biosensing are also discussed with regard to the increasing demand for biosensors.

The flexural property and its synergistic mechanism of multibody molded beetle elytron plates

To improve the applications of beetle elytron plates(BEPs,which are biomimetic sandwich plates inspired by beetle elytra),the flexural performance and its synergistic mechanism of multibody molded BEPs were investigated via cantilever testing and finite element method(FEM).The results are summarized as follows.(1)Although debonding damage causes failure of the multibody molded BEPs and honeycomb plate and the reasonable range of trabecular size for BEPs is narrow,both the optimal loading capacity per mass and failure deformation of the BEPs are over two times those of the honeycomb plate.(2)A flexural synergistic mechanism is revealed in the trabecular-honeycomb core structure of BEPs;this mechanism causes the maximum deformation of core structure to gradually transfer from the honeycomb wall to the trabeculae with the increase inη(the ratio of the trabecular radius to the distance between the center points of two trabeculae),which means the different stretching behaviors in these core structures.(3)Unlike the compressive mechanism of BEPs,by controlling and balancing the deformation degrees of the trabeculae and honeycomb walls,the flexural mechanism achieves a minimum core deformation and an optimal flexural *** results suggest a qualitative relationship between the deformation behavior of trabecular-honeycomb core structure and bending performance of the whole BEP,and provide a solid foundation for subsequent research and the considerable application potential of this biomimetic sandwich structure in many fields.

Vibration properties and transverse shear characteristics of multibody molded beetle elytron plates

This study utilized cantilever experiments to investigate the vibration properties of multibody molded beetle elytron plates(BEPs),which is a type of biomimetic sandwich plate inspired by beetle elytra;the corresponding shear characteristics were further revealed by a finite element method(FEM). The following results were obtained:(1) Experimental results suggest that the maximum displacement response of the BEPs was about 25% less than that of a honeycomb plate with almost the same first natural frequency,which indicates that a BEP with reasonable structural parameters has the potential to replace a honeycomb plate to achieve better vibration performance;(2) The trabecular structure not only enhanced the shear stiffness of the core layer in column areas but also the skins in the honeycomb wall areas,thus changing the distribution of the shear force in the different components and improving the mechanical performances of the BEP;and(3) Although this enhancement effect from trabeculae was not uniform,the average shear force proportion of the skins(or core structure) in the entire BEP structure was very close to that of the honeycomb plate. Therefore,the shear calculation assumption used for honeycomb plates is still applicable in the *** results provide an experimental basis for the design and application of BEPs and inspiration for the development of related products in vibrational environments.

Multi-stimuli bilayer hydrogel actuator for remotely controllable transportation of droplets

Under external stimuli, the bilayer hydrogels can change their shapes or move mechanically with fast, sensitive and adjustable motion characteristics. However, the main methods for preparing bilayer hydrogels have many limitations, such as they involve complicated synthesis processes, lead to fragile bilayer interface and structure,and result in single responsiveness and deformation, which hinders the practical applications of bilayer hydrogel in intelligent bionics. Here, we used the reaction-diffusion of sodium alginate(SA) and chitosan(CS) combined with the photopolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAM) to prepare(PNIPAM/SA)/(SA/CS) bilayer hydrogel film. The bilayer hydrogel film can well respond to the alteration of temperature, p H, salt concentration and thickness ratio with good interlayer bonding. This strategy can be applied to intelligent drive device to promote its practical application.

We integrated Enviro-HIRLAM(Environment-High Resolution Limited Area Model)meteorological output into FLEXPART(FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model).A FLEXPART simulation requires meteorological input from a numerical weather prediction(NWP)*** publicly available version of FLEXPART can utilize either ECMWF(European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts)Integrated Forecast System(IFS)forecast or reanalysis NWP data,or NCEP(*** Center for Environmental Prediction)Global Forecast System(GFS)forecast or reanalysis NWP *** primary benefits of using Enviro-HIRLAM are that it runs at a higher resolution and accounts for aerosol effects in meteorological *** compared backward trajectories gener-ated with FLEXPART using Enviro-HIRLAM(both with and without aerosol effects)to trajectories generated using NCEP GFS and ECMWF IFS meteorological inputs,for a case study of a heavy haze event which occurred in Beijing,China in November *** found that results from FLEXPART were considerably different when using different meteorological *** aerosol effects were included in the NWP,there was a small but noticeable differ-ence in calculated ***,when looking at potential emission sensitivity instead of simply expressing trajectories as lines,additional information,which may have been missed when looking only at trajectories as lines,can be inferred.

Under the constantly changing production and marketing conditions including globalization,the fashion apparel industries are frequently restructuring to maintain customers and sustain *** of the methodologies adopted by manufacturers includes mass customization,which attempts to produce near custom made product at near mass production *** swimwear requires tighter fit tolerance and still has fashion content,it has been used in this study to illustrate the ease of design change,design modification,and ***-style design of swimsuit is very demanding and time-consuming if traditional design methods are *** manufacturers require systems with the capacity to deal with garment design process as a whole,including possibilities to work directly within a 3D graphic ***,it is realised that one of the major challenges in garment design concerns the physically-based simulation of production and 3D *** innovation method consisting of a computer-aided design(CAD)system,allowing the designer to perform multi-style swimsuit design on a customized virtual human body,is presented in this *** 3D visualization and personalization of the simulation results are presented to help the designers to preview and determine whether the design of the swimsuit is satisfactory and then obtain feedback to improve their designs *** new functions of the virtual system provide the abilities to perform intelligent design of various swimsuit styles and materials for different body parts according to individual design *** advantages of innovative design method for swimsuit have been discussed in this paper and examples have been provided to illustrate the ease of use CAD in design simulation and innovation.

Pinning impulsive synchronization of stochastic delayed coupled networks

In this paper, the pinning synchronization problem of stochastic delayed complex network （SDCN） is investigated by using a novel hybrid pinning controller. The proposed hybrid pinning controller is composed of adaptive controller and impulsive controller, where the two controllers are both added to a fraction of nodes in the network. Using the Lyapunov stability theory and the novel hybrid pinning controller, some sufficient conditions are derived for the exponential synchronization of such dynamical networks in mean square. Two numerical simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the proposed control scheme has a fast convergence rate compared with the conventional adaptive pinning method.
