“Cut-and-paste” method for the rapid prototyping of soft electronics

Unlike wafer-based rigid electronics, soft electronics have many unique advantages inc.uding thinness, flexibility, stretchability,conformability, lightweight, large area, as well as low cost. As a result, they have demonstrated many emerging capabilities in healthcare devices, soft robotics, and human-machine interface. Instead of conventional microfabrication, there is an evergrowing interest in the freeform or digital manufacture of soft electronics. This review provides a survey for a cost-and timeeffective subtractive manufacturing process called the "cut-and-paste" method. It employs a mechanical cutter plotter to form patterns on various electronically functional membranes such as sheets of metals, functional polymers, and even two-dimensional(2D) materials, supported by a temporary tape. The patterned membranes can then be pasted on soft substrates such as medical tapes or even human skin. This process is completely dry and desktop. It does not involve any rigid wafers and is hence capable of making large-area electronics. The process can be repeated to integrate multiple materials on a single *** circuits(ICs) and rigid components can be added through a "cut-solder-paste" process. Multilayer devices can also be fabricated through lamination. We therefore advocate that the "cut-and-paste" method is a very versatile approach for the rapid prototyping of soft electronics for various applications.

Probiotic medilac-S^(█) for the induction of clinical remission in a Chinese population with ulcerative colitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM To assess the effects of probiotic medilac-S~ as adjunctive therapy for the induction of remission of ulcerative colitis(UC) in a Chinese population through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted to find randomized, controlled trials in a Chinese population with at least two study arms-a control arm which receives a conventional, oral aminosalicylate drug, and a treatment arm, which administers the same conventional drug in conjunction with the probiotic medilac-S~ per os. Both English and Chinese databases were searched, inc.uding Pub med, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and VIP Search, and study data was extracted onto standardized abstraction sheets. Meta-analyses were conducted for primary and secondary outcomes of interest using a fixed or random effects model. The primary outcome was the induction of clinical remission and the secondary outcomes inc.uded changes in Sutherland index, endoscopic and histological scores, proportion of reported clinical symptoms and adverse events(AEs). For outcomes with sufficient data, the type of conventional drug therapy was also assessed to determine if the effects of combination therapy with medilac-S~ was influenced by drug type. All tests were conducted using a type Ⅰ error rate of 0.05 and all confidence intervals(CI) were based on a 95% confidence level. Review protocol was uploaded to PROSPERO(CRD42018085658 upon completion).RESULTS Fifty-three clinical trials with a total of 3984 participants were identified and inc.uded in the review. medilac-S~ adjunctive therapy significantly improved induction of clinical remission(RR = 1.21; 95%CI: 1.18-1.24; P < 0.0001) with the estimated likelihood of effective treatment, on average, 21% higher for those consuming the probiotic. Sepsis: A Systematic Review of Antibiotic Resistance and Antimicrobial Therapies

Sepsis is a medical emergency that depicts the body’s systemic immune reaction to an infectious process that could result in organ dysfunction and death. Early sepsis pathogen identification and early delivery of antimicrobial therapy result in better clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with sepsis and septic shock. Method: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses that discussed sepsis pathogen identification, antibiotic resistance and timing in the treatment of sepsis were taken into account irrespective of the approach of the inc.uded studies, quantitative or qualitative. This literature review gathers data from twelve primary studies to perform a systematic review and evaluate existing empirical antibiotic therapies in order to treat the various degrees of sepsis and minimize antibiotic resistance. The remaining reviews, case studies, etc., were used as supplementary references. The studies compiled data from laboratory tests inc.uding lactate levels, fluid resuscitation, and diagnostic diagnostics like the SOFA score. Results: This paper identifies multiple factors that must be taken into account when treating individuals with sepsis. Prior to the administration of broad-spectrum empiric antibiotics, the severity and morbidity of the disease must be addressed. Excessive antibiotic usage has been associated with inc.eased sepsis hospitalized mortality rates, and thus it is crucial to minimize antibiotic misuse in non-septic patients. This can be accomplished by differentiating between Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, the purpose of biomarkers and identifying the antibiotic resistance pathway. Many patients from low economic statuses may experience difficulties accessing healthcare services and resources for sepsis treatment when diagnosed with sepsis. Effects of cereal fiber on bowel function: A systematic review of intervention trials

AIM: To comprehensively review and quantitatively summarize results from intervention studies that examined the effects of intact cereal dietary fiber on parameters of bowel function. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using Pub med and EMBASE. Supplementary literature searches inc.uded screening reference lists from relevant studies and reviews. Eligible outcomes were stool wet and dry weight, percentage water in stools, stool frequency and consistency, and total transit time. Weighted regression analyses generated mean change(± SD) in these measures per g/d of dietary fiber. RESULTS: Sixty-five intervention studies among generally healthy populations were identified. A quantitative examination of the effects of non-wheat sources of intact cereal dietary fibers was not possible due to an insufficient number of studies. Weighted regression analyses demonstrated that each extra g/d of wheat fiber inc.eased total stool weight by 3.7 ± 0.09 g/d(P < 0.0001; 95%CI: 3.50-3.84), dry stool weight by 0.75 ± 0.03 g/d(P < 0.0001; 95%CI: 0.69-0.82), and stool frequency by 0.004 ± 0.002 times/d(P = 0.0346; 95%CI: 0.0003-0.0078). Transittime decreased by 0.78 ± 0.13 h per additional g/d(P < 0.0001; 95%CI: 0.53-1.04) of wheat fiber among those with an initial transit time greater than 48 ***: Wheat dietary fiber, and predominately wheat bran dietary fiber, improves measures of bowel function.

Kaempferia parviflora ethanol extract improves self-assessed sexual health in men:a pilot study

Background： Sexual health positively correlates with overall wellbeing. Existing therapeutics to enhance male sexual health are limited by factors that inc.ude responsiveness, adherence and adverse effects. As the population ages, safe and effective interventions that preserve male sexual function are needed. Published research suggests that various preparations of Kaempferia parviflora, a plant in the Zingiberaceae （ginger） family, support cardiovascular health and may ameliorate erectile function. Objective： The aim of this study was to examine the effects of KaempMaxTM, an ethanol extract of the K. parvi]lora rhizome, on erectile function in healthy middle-aged and older men. Design, setting, participants and interventions： We conducted an open-label, one-arm study on 14 generally healthy males aged 50-68 years with self-reported mild erectile dysfunction, who were not using pre- scription treatments. Participants took 100 mg KaempMaxTM daily for 30 days. Main outcome measures： Evaluations were conducted at baseline and on the final study assessment. Primary efficacy analyses inc.uded the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF）; secondary efficacy analyses inc.uded the Global Assessment Question about erectile function. Results： Thirteen participants completed the 30-day study. Supplementation with KaempMaxTM resulted in statistically significant improvements in erectile function, intercourse satisfaction and total scores on the IIEF questionnaire. KaempMaxTM was well tolerated and exhibited an excellent safety profile. Conclusion： Our results suggest that KaempMaxTM may improve erectile function in healthy middle-aged and older men. While the effects were not as pronounced as what might be seen with prescription med- ication, most participants found them satisfactory. Cancer stem cells （CSCs） are a rare subpopulation of phenotypically distinc. cancer cells exhibiting stem cell characteristics. They are tumourigenic, meanwhile capable of self-renewal and forming differentiated progenies. A Comparison of Various Normalization Methods for LC/MS Metabolomics Data

In metabolomics data, like other -omics data, normalization is an important part of the data processing. The goal of normalization is to reduce the variation from non-biological sources (such as instrument batch effects), while maintaining the biological variation. Many normalization techniques make adjustments to each sample. One common method is to adjust each sample by its Total Ion Current (TIC), i.e. for each feature in the sample, divide its intensity value by the total for the sample. Because many of the assumptions of these methods are dubious in metabolomics data sets, we compare these methods to two methods that make adjustments separately for each metabolite, rather than for each sample. These two methods are the following: 1) for each metabolite, divide its value by the median level in bridge samples (BRDG);2) for each metabolite divide its value by the median across the experimental samples (med). These methods were assessed by comparing the correlation of the normalized values to the values from targeted assays for a subset of metabolites in a large human plasma data set. The BRDG and med normalization techniques greatly outperformed the other methods, which often performed worse than performing no normalization at all.

Loop Quantum Gravity Harmonic Oscillator

Attempts to unify Gravity Theory and Quantum Field Theory (QFT) under Loop Quantum Gravity Theory (LQG), are diverse;a dividing line between classical and quantum is sought with Schrödinger cat-state experiments. A Primordial Field Theory-based alternative is presented, and a gravity-based harmonic oscillator developed. With quantum theory applied at micro-scales and gravity theory at meso- and macro-scales, this scale-gap contributes to the conceptual problems associated with Loop Quantum Gravity. Primordial field theory, spanning all scales, is used to conceptually stretch key ideas across this gap. An LQG interpretation of the wave function associated with the oscillator is explained.
