Variation of meniscus shape and initial steel solidification under different steel-slag interfacial tension in continuous casting mold of slab

A two-dimensional model was applied to investigate the influence of the interfacial tension between the steel and the slag on the behavior of the meniscus in continuous casting mold of slab.The shape of the meniscus and phenomena near the meniscus were revealed,and the profile of the slag rim and the depth of the solidified meniscus and oscillation marks with different interfacial tension of the steel and slag were compared.With the increase in the interfacial tension,the size of the curved meniscus increased,while the curvature and the height of the local meniscus close to the mold decreased.Besides,the thickness of the slag rim,solid slag and total slag near the meniscus had the tendency to increase,and the bottom of the slag rim became lower and thicker.With the increase in the interfacial tension from 0.1 to 2.5 N/m,the location of the largest heat flux near the meniscus decreased from 10.0 to 2.5 mm above the initial level of the steel,and the largest heat flux was within 3.52-4.58 MW/m^(2).Meanwhile,the largest depth of the solidified meniscus decreased from 3.3 to 2.3 mm,and the depth of oscillation marks decreased,which was conducive to the shallow hook at the subsurface of the slab,and the improvement of surface cleanliness of the slab.

Optimization of Low Phosphorus Steel Production With Double Slag Process in BOF

To produce the steel with phosphorus less than 0. 007% （mass percent）, the double slag process has been optimized in basic oxygen furnace （BOF）. Dephosphorization and decarburization are performed in sequence in the same converter. Deslagging is conducted twice, each at the end of dephosphorization and decarburization, by tilting the BOF. Production was tested in a 180 t BOF. Mass percent of phosphorus in steel at BOF blow end has been made to as low as 0. 004 2 % after optimizing operational parameters. Factors affecting dephosphorization performance were studied. Before intermediate deslagging, dephosphorization is determined by the mass transfer of phosphorus from metal/slag interface to bulk slag phase rather than equilibrium thermodynamic conditions. After intermediate deslag-ging, dephosphorization is deter/nined by the equilibriurn thermodynamic conditions such as slag composition and temperature.

The use of low-grade,refractory and composite paragenetic mineral resources is necessary for overcoming the shortage of iron ore resources in China.As a solution to the treatment of such iron ores,the direct reduction of carbon-bearing pellets can ensure complete iron removal and the effective enrichment of other high-value elements.Thus,this technology enjoys a broad application prospect.However,there are several problems with low-temperature reduction,such as low iron ore reaction efficiency,long reaction time,and high energy consumption.To improve the low-temperature carbothermic reduction efficiency of iron ores,a static magnetic field with magnetic induction intensity of 1.0 T was introduced.An isothermal reduction experiment was conducted at 1223 K to study the low-temperature self-reduction characteristics of carbon-bearing pellets of Bayan Obo lean iron ores in the static magnetic field.Also,the acting mechanism of the magnetic field was explored from the perspective of the reduction process,reaction efficiency,phase composition,microstructure changes,and dynamic behavior of iron ores.The results showed that the magnetic field can increase the low-temperature reduction rate of carbon-bearing pellets of Bayan Obo lean iron ores.Under the conditions of reduction temperature of 1223 K,magnetic induction intensity of 1.0 T,and reduction time of 60 min,the reduction degree was 92.42%,1.65 times that without a magnetic field.The magnetic field promoted the replacement of Ca^(2+)and Fe^(2+),so that the hard-to-reduce iron-bearing silicates were reduced in the order of Fe2SiO_(4)→(Ca,Na)FeSiO_(4)→FeO→Fe.The magnetic field enabled loose minerals,more pores and cracks,and changes in the growth morphology and distribution position of metallic iron.Compared with the case under the non-magnetic condition,the metallic iron precipitated from the slag phase in a foliated shape,separated from the matrix iron oxides,and grew up at the junction of the slag phase and coke.The magnetic field significantly increased the interf

The water modelling experiments of 300 t converter concerning combined blowing parameters, the number, and configuration of bottom nozzles are carried out. The results show that the arrangement of 16 bottom nozzles at 0. 40D and 0. 45D （hearth diameter） concentric circles is the reasonable solution. The combined blowing steel- making technique of 300 t converter has been developed through experiments and studies relating to optimizing the top-bottom combined blowing pattern, the number and configuration of the bottom nozzles, the type selection of bot- tom nozzle, and bottom nozzle maintenance techniques. The results show that the product of w[c] ＂ w[o] at endpoint is reduced from 0. 002 62 to 0. 002 43, average TFe content is decreased by %, phosphorus distribution is raised from 70.85 to 78.95, sulfur distribution is raised from 3.43 to 4.32 and manganese content is raised by 0.02%.

Aiming at the nozzle blocking problem in rectangular bloom production, analyze the reason, and put forword to using non-aluminium producing process to solve this problem. By analysis the experiment data, that indicate using non-aluminium process we can get good desulfurization and white slag, also get good castability and best quality. This process can fulfill the requirement of produce, it is reasonable and feasible.

Based on the fact of long period deep desulfurization treatment in LF,the relationships among top slag constituent in LF,molten steel constituent,stirring ability of blowing argon,molten steel temperature and desulphurization rate were analyzed.Through the experiments,the parameters about treatment technology of top slag in LF,the [Als] content in molten steel,slag charge match,molten steel temperature and the argon flow for stirring have been optimized.The desulphurization treatment period in LF can be shortened by 5～8 minutes.The target sulfur content in molten steel can be controlled below 30 ppm within one LF treatment period which is only 36 minutes.The LF treatment period of ultra-low sulfur steel can primarily match with the continuous casting period,multi-heat continuous casting can be ensured.

Study on the optimization of the combined blown converter process in Chongqing Iron and Steel Company

The effects of lance height and bottom blown flowrate on the mixed time, the splashing amount, the penetrating depth, and the level fluctuation of an 85 t combined blown converter have been studied using a water model. The results show that the maximal stirring energy is provided to the bath at the top lance height of about 50-100 mm. When the top lance height is in the range ofg0- 110 mm, the splashing amount caused by the top jet can reach the maximal value. The appropriate operational parameters of Chongqing Iron and Steel Company （CISC） converter have been established that the top lance height is 1600-1760 mm and the bottom blowing flowrate is 240-480 Nm^3/h in the primary phase of a heat, 1100-1300 mm and 160-200 Nm^3/h in the second phase, and 1040-1120 mm and 200-350 Nm^3/h in the end phase. Also, the trial shows that the metallurgical result of the studied blow pattern is better than that of the former pattern. Based on the current process and equipment conditions of No.3 steelmaking and continuous rolling plant, which consists of desulphurization and slag skimming of hot metal, 260t combined blown BOF, rimmed steel tapping with slag stopping process, RH-TB vacuum treatment process and medium thin slab continuous casting, the methods for improving cleanliness of IF steel in BOF smelting, RH vacuum treatment and continuous casting were investigated. According to results of theoretical analysis and experiments, a series of quality controlling schemes were proposed for improving cleanliness of IF steel via controlling chemical composition, T[O] content, tapping temperature, shrouded casting and controlling stability of continuous casting.

Flow Control in Six-Strand Billet Continuous Casting Tundish With Different Configurations

A 1∶2.5 scale tundish model was set up in laboratory for a six-strand billet continuous casting tundish with different configurations to investigate fluid flow characteristics under different operational conditions by measuring residence time distribution curves.It was found that minimum residence time,maximum concentration time and average residence time of the three strands on the same side of the tundish with the former configuration under normal operation,that is,six strands were open,were small and non-uniform and the tundish had large dead volume fraction.Vortexes easily formed on the liquid surface in the pouring zone of the tundish.The fluid flow characteristics in the tundish with the optimal turbulence inhibitor and baffles were improved and became less non-uniform among the strands.Vortexes were not found on the pouring zone surface in the optimal tundish.For non-normal operation,that is,one strand was close,it was important to choose which strand to be closed for maintaining flow characteristics of the rest two strands.It was found from this investigation that fluid flow characteristics in the optimal configuration tundish with closing strand 2 were better than those with closing strand 3 on the same side.
