A novel CGBoost deep learning algorithm for coseismic landslide susceptibility prediction

The accurate prediction of landslide susceptibility shortly after a violent earthquake is quite vital to the emergency rescue in the 72-h‘‘golden window”.However,the limited quantity of interpreted landslides shortly after a massive earthquake makes landslide susceptibility prediction become a *** address this gap,this work suggests an integrated method of Crossing Graph attention network and xgBoost(CGBoost).This method contains three branches,which extract the interrelations among pixels within a slope unit,the interrelations among various slope units,and the relevance between influencing factors and landslide probability,respectively,and obtain rich and discriminative features by an adaptive fusion ***,the difficulty of susceptibility modeling under a small number of coseismic landslides can be *** a basic module of CGBoost,the proposed Crossing graph attention network(Crossgat)could characterize the spatial heterogeneity within and among slope units to reduce the false alarm in the susceptibility ***,the rainfall dynamic factors are utilized as prediction indices to improve the susceptibility performance,and the prediction index set is established by terrain,geology,human activity,environment,meteorology,and earthquake *** is applied to predict landslide susceptibility in the Gorkha meizoseismal area.3.43%of coseismic landslides are randomly selected,of which 70%are used for training,and the others for *** the testing set,the values of Overall Accuracy,Precision,Recall,F1-score,and Kappa coefficient of CGBoost attain 0.9800,0.9577,0.9999,0.9784,and 0.9598,*** by all the coseismic landslides,CGBoost outperforms the current major landslide susceptibility assessment *** suggested CGBoost can be also applied to landslide susceptibility prediction in new earthquakes in the future.

We look at the link between climate change and vector-borne diseases in low- and middle-income countries in Africa. The large endemicity and escalating threat of diseases such as malaria and arboviral diseases, intensified by climate change, disproportionately affects vulnerable communities globally. We highlight the urgency of prioritizing research and development, advocating for robust scientific inquiry to promote adaptation strategies, and the vital role that the next generation of African research leaders will play in addressing these challenges. Despite significant challenges such as funding shortages within countries, various pan-African-oriented funding bodies such as the African Academy of Sciences, the Africa Research Excellence Fund, the Wellcome Trust, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as initiatives such as the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence and the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association, have empowered (or are empowering) these researchers by supporting capacity building activities, including continental and global networking, skill development, mentoring, and African-led research. This article underscores the urgency of increased national investment in research, proposing the establishment of research government agencies to drive evidence-based interventions. Collaboration between governments and scientific communities, sustained by pan-African funding bodies, is crucial. Through these efforts, African nations are likely to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of their systems and communities by navigating these challenges effectively, fostering scientific excellence and implementing transformative solutions against climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases.

Assessment of SoilGrids data for soil erosion estimation at watershed scale:A case study in northern Thailand

Soil erosion has been identified as one of the most destructive forms of land degradation, posing a threat to the sustainability of global economic, social and environmental systems. This underscores the need for sustainable land management that takes erosion control and prevention into consideration. This requires the use of state-of-the-art erosion prediction models. The models often require extensive input of detailed spatial and temporal data, some of which are not readily available in many developing countries, particularly detailed soil data. The soil dataset Global Gridded Soil Information(SoilGrids) could potentially fill the data gap. Nevertheless, its value and accuracy for soil erosion modelling in the humid tropics is still unknown, necessitating the need to assess its value vis-à-vis field-based data. The major objective of this study was to conduct a comparative assessment of the value of SoilGrids and field-based soil data for estimating soil loss. Soil samples were collected from five physiographic positions(summit, shoulder, back slope, foot slope, and toe slope) using the soil catena approach. Samples were collected using a 5-cm steel sample ring(undisturbed) and a spade(disturbed). Data of the landform, predominant vegetation types, canopy cover, average plant height, land use, soil depth, shear strength, and soil color were recorded for each site. The soil samples were subjected to laboratory analysis for saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, particle size distribution, and organic matter content. Pedotransfer functions were applied on the SoilGrids and field-based data to generate soil hydrological properties. The resultant field-based data were compared with the SoilGrids data for corresponding points/areas to determine the potential similarities of the two datasets. Summer Extreme Precipitation in the Key Region of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway

The Sichuan-Tibet Railway,mainly located in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,is affected by summertime extreme precipitation(SEP).Using daily rain-gauge observations and ERA5 reanalysis data for the summers of 1979-2020,the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of SEP in the key region of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway(28°-33°N,90°-105°E,hereafter KR)are revealed,and the mechanism for SEP amount(SEPA)variation in the KR is *** results show that SEPA in the KR contributes nearly 30%to the total summer *** differences are evident in SEP,justifying thresholds higher in the plateau-dominated central-western KR(CWKR)and lower in the basindominated eastern KR(EKR).In addition,SEP in the CWKR is less intense but more frequent than SEP in the *** 1979-2020,the SEPA in the KR increased slightly while the SEPA in the CWKR increased significantly and peaked in the last *** anticyclonic circulation(AC)anomalies dominate the 500 hPa pattern over the Bay of Bengal and Mongolia,the southerly flow and cyclonic shear over the southeastern plateau will be strengthened,favoring more SEPA in the *** an AC anomaly dominates the 500 hPa pattern over the Bohai Sea,the low-level easterly wind over the basin will be strengthened,favoring more SEPA in the *** strengthening of the ascent,water vapor convergence,and convective instability is conducive to more SEPA in the *** results deepen the understanding of the characteristics and the physical mechanisms responsible for extreme precipitation in the KR.

Recently, China’s state Council issued the Continuous Improvement of Air Quality Action Plan (hereafter, the third action plan),which follows the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan(2013–2017)(hereafter, the first action plan) and the Three-Year Action Plan for Winning the Blue Sky Defense Battle (2018–2020)(hereafter the second action plan). The first two action plans yielded nationwide health benefits [1–3], from improving lung function [4] to saving medical expenditures [5]. Based on our previous estimates [6], due to reductions in the fine particulate matter(PM2.5) level, implementation of the first and second action plans was expected to increase life expectancy by 2.11 and 3.68 months,respectively.

Surrogate modeling for unsaturated infiltration via the physics and equality-constrained artificial neural networks

Machine learning(ML)provides a new surrogate method for investigating groundwater flow dynamics in unsaturated *** pure data-driven methods(*** neural network,DNN)can provide rapid predictions,but they do require sufficient on-site data for accurate training,and lack interpretability to the physical processes within the *** this paper,we provide a physics and equalityconstrained artificial neural network(PECANN),to derive unsaturated infiltration solutions with a small amount of initial and boundary *** takes the physics-informed neural network(PINN)as a foundation,encodes the unsaturated infiltration physical laws(*** equation,RE)into the loss function,and uses the augmented Lagrangian method to constrain the learning process of the solutions of RE by adding stronger penalty for the initial and boundary *** unsaturated infiltration cases are designed to test the training performance of PECANN,***-dimensional(1D)steady-state unsaturated infiltration,1D transient-state infiltration,two-dimensional(2D)transient-state infiltration,and 1D coupled unsaturated infiltration and *** predicted results of PECANN are compared with the finite difference solutions or analytical *** results indicate that PECANN can accurately capture the variations of pressure head during the unsaturated infiltration,and present higher precision and robustness than DNN and *** is also revealed that PECANN can achieve the same accuracy as the finite difference method with fewer initial and boundary training ***,we investigate the effect of the hyperparameters of PECANN on solving RE *** provides an effective tool for simulating unsaturated infiltration.
