Quantitative proteomics provides insight into the response of the marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense to changes in ambient phosphorus

Dinofl agellates are the major causative agents of harmful algal blooms in the global ocean and they usually form blooms under conditions of very low dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP).However,the mechanisms underpinning the dinofl agellate blooms remain unclear.Here,we quantitatively compared protein expression profi les of a marine dinofl agellate,Prorocentrum donghaiense,grown in inorganic P-replete,P-defi cient,and DIP-and dissolved organic phosphorus(DOP)-resupplied conditions by employing a Tandem Mass Tag(TMT)-based quantitative proteomic approach.Proteins involved in intracellular P reallocation,organic P,and non-P lipid utilization were up-regulated under the P-defi cient condition,while inorganic phosphate transporters varied insignifi cantly.In response to the P resupplementation,nitrogen metabolism,ribosome,porphyrin,and chlorophyll metabolism were up-regulated,while lysosome,and starch and sucrose metabolism were down-regulated.Notably,photosynthesis was up-regulated and secondary metabolism was down-regulated only in the DIP-resupplied cells,whereas amino acid metabolism and vitamin B6 metabolism were up-regulated in the DOP-resupplied cells,indicating diff erential response mechanisms of P.donghaiense to DIP or DOP resupplementation.Our results indicated that P.donghaiense initiated multiple strategies in response to an ambient inorganic P-defi ciency,and its efficient DOP assimilation by providing both P and carbon sources might be a key factor driving bloom formations of P.donghaiense in a low DIP environment.

Improving energy efficiency is regarded as a key path to tackling global warming and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).In 2020,the energy consumption of the world's ten major energy-consuming countries accounted for 66.8%of the global total.This paper applied data envelopment analysis(DEA)to calculate these ten major energyconsuming countries'total-factor energy efficiency(TFEE)at national and sectoral levels from 2001-2020,and explored the infuencing factors of total-factor energy efficiency with the Tobit regression model.The results showed significant difference in the ten countries'energy efficiency.The United states and Germany topped the list for total-factor energy efficiency,while China and India were at the bottom.Meanwhile,the energy efficiency of the industrial subsector has increased significantly over the past two decades,while that of the other subsectors has been relatively fat.The industrial structure upgrading,per capita GDP,energy consumption structure,and foreign direct investment had significant impacts on energy efficiency with national heterogeneity.Energy consumption structure and GDP per capita were determinative factors of energy efficiency.

The circadian clock is a fundamental endogenous mechanism of adaptation that coordinates the physiology and behavior of most organisms with diel variations in the external environment to maintain temporal homeostasis.Diatoms are the major primary producers in the ocean.However,little is known about the circadian clock in marine diatoms compared with other organisms.Here,we investigated circadian clock genes,their expression patterns,and responses to environmental stimuli such as light,nitrogen and phosphorus in two marine diatoms,Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum,using a combination of q RT-PCR and bioinformatic analysis.We identified 17 and 18 circadian clock genes in P.tricornutum and S.costatum,respectively.Despite significant evolutionary differences,these genes were similar to those of the higher plant Arabidopsis.We also established a molecular model for the marine diatom circadian clock comprising an input pathway,core oscillator,output pathway,and valve effector.Notably,the expression patterns of core clock genes(circadian clock associated 1(CCA1),late elongated hypocotyl(LHY)and timing of cab 1(TOC1))in both species differed from those of terrestrial plants.Furthermore,the expression of these genes was influenced by variations in ambient light,nitrogen and phosphorus availability.Although marine diatoms and higher plants share common circadian clock components,their clock genes have diverged throughout evolution,likely as a result of adapting to contrasting environments.

Process analysis of PM_(2.5) pollution events in a coastal city of China using CMAQ

US EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system(CMAQ) with Process Analysis tool was used to simulate and quantify the contribution of individual atmospheric processes to PM_(2.5) concentration in Qingdao during three representative PM_(2.5) pollution events in the winter of 2015 and 2016. Compared with the observed surface PM_(2.5) concentrations, CMAQ could reasonably reproduce the temporal and spatial variations of PM_(2.5) during these three events. Process analysis results show that primary emissions accounted for 72.7%–93.2% of the accumulation of surface PM_(2.5) before and after the events.When the events occurred, primary emissions were still the major contributor to the increase of PM_(2.5) in Qingdao, however the contribution percentage reduced significantly,which only account for 51.4%–71.8%. Net contribution from horizontal and vertical transport to the accumulation of PM_(2.5) was also positive and its percentage increased when events occurred. Only 1.1%–4.6% of aerosol accumulation was due to PM processes and aqueous chemical processes before and after events. When the events occurred,contribution from PM processes and aqueous chemistry increased to 6.0%–11.8%. Loss of PM_(2.5) was mainly through horizontal transport, vertical transport and dry deposition, no matter during or outside the events. Wet deposition would become the main removal pathway of PM_(2.5), when precipitation occurred.

The Liaoning Hongyan River Nuclear Power Plant is located on the east coast of Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea,China,and the safety of the cooling water is often threatened by large-scale jellyfish outbreaks.Thus,monitoring jellyfish growth,migration,and disappearance is essential to the safety of the nuclear power plant.In this study,high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the community characteristics of mesoplankton in the sea area at the inlet and outlet from April to September 2019.At the same time,the micro-individuals of jellyfish(including oosperm,planula,polyps,or ephyra of jellyfish)in the water were detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR(qPCR).Both the maximum abundance of Aurelia coerulea and Nemopilema nomurai in July were detected by high-throughput sequencing and q PCR.Only three common taxa of plankton(Paracalanus,Calanoida,and Poaceae)were found in the waters near the inlet and outlet,and the beta diversity of plankton in the waters near the inlet and outlet was low in the same period.Based on the plankton community composition in the sea water near the inlet,it could be speculated that jellyfish outbreaks would have a significant impact on the plankton via the predation effect.The maximum mt-16S rDNA copy numbers of A.coerulea and N.nomurai in the samples from the waters of Liaodong Bay were detected in June 2019,and that of N.nomurai showed an increasing trend from north to south,with the jellyfish tending to move to the seawaters near the plant.The results indicate that the optimum monitoring period for jellyfish outbreaks in Liaodong Bay is from the end of May to the end of July.

Textile wastewater shows great threats to the environment if not well pretreated before discharge. A promising technique, ozonation, was applied to remove the color in dye solutions containing C.I. Reactive Red 195 （RR195） in a semi-batch reactor. The decolorization of RRI95 by the ozone process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Several factors which influenced the efficiency of decolorization were studied and the reaction rate constant （k） obtained with different operational parameters was compared. Our results showed that RRI95 was more easily degraded in acidic than in alkaline conditions. The dyeing auxiliaries （sodium carbonate and sodium chloride） that acted as radical scavengers could enhance the decolorization process, and the ozonation time for total color removal lengthened if the initial dye concentration was higher. The analysis of the ozonation products was performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer and a possible degradation pathway was predicted according to the ozonation products and structure of RR195. Our results indicated that ozonation was effective in the color removal of dyes, but further treatment might be necessary since the ozonation products are high toxic.

Characterization of Bacterial Communities in Aerosols over Northern Chinese Marginal Seas and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean in Autumn

The characteristics of the bacterial community structure in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean in autumn were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and the quantitative real-time PCR method based on 16S rRNA genes.Combined with environmental factors and air mass sources,the bacterial abundance,community diversity,composition and structural characteristics in aerosols were studied,which might provide a scientific evaluation for a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics,long-distance transmission and ecological effects of aerosols from coastal waters to the distant ocean(northwestern Pacific Ocean).At the junction of the South Yellow Sea and the East China Sea,the bacterial abundance in the aerosols was substantially affected by transmission of continental air masses and was higher than those in other samples,and the bacterial abundance in coarse particle(>2.1μm)samples was significantly higher than that in fine particle(0.05).Among the environmental factors examined,a significant negative correlation was observed between bacterial community richness and temperature(P<0.05),and the bacterial community diversity was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of K^(+)(P<0.05).Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature,NH_(4)^(+) concentration and SO_(4)^(2−) concentration exerted significant effects on bacterial community structures(P<0.01)in aerosols of different particle s

The production of toxic sulfides is a common environmental problem in mariculture.Therefore,the effective inhibition of sulfidogens is the key to prevent sulfides production.In this study,the possibility and mechanism of nitrate(NO_(3)^(−))inhibiting the activity of the sulfate-reducing microbiota(SRM)from mariculture sediments was investigated.The results showed that 1,3,and 5 mmol L^(−1)NO_(3)^(−)continuously inhibited sulfide production for 1-3 d.As NO_(3)^(−) dosage increased to 7 mmol L^(−1),the duration of inhibition increased to 6 days.Denitrifying product NO_(2)^(−)heavily inhibited the activity of dissimilar sulfate reductase gene(dsrB)by 3 orders,which was the main reason that the sulfate-reducing activity was inhibited.The SRM structure changed significantly with the dosage of NO_(3)^(−),while the abundance of sulfidogens Desulfovibrio species increased due to their capability of detoxifying nitrite through nitrite reductase.Hence,sulfidogens Desulfovibrio species are more adaptable to a high nitrate/nitrite environment,and the traditional control strategies by dosing nitrate/nitrite should be paid more attention to.The findings will serve as helpful guidelines for sulfate-reducing microbiota in the habitat of mariculture to reduce their generation of poisonous sulfide.

Fuzzy cluster analysis of water mass in the western Taiwan Strait in spring 2019

The classification of the springtime water mass has an important influence on the hydrography,regional climate change and fishery in the Taiwan Strait.Based on 58 stations of CTD profiling data collected in the western and southwestern Taiwan Strait during the spring cruise of 2019,we analyze the spatial distributions of temperature(T)and salinity(S)in the investigation area.Then by using the fuzzy cluster method combined with the T-S similarity number,we classify the investigation area into 5 water masses:the Minzhe Coastal Water(MZCW),the Taiwan Strait Mixed Water(TSMW),the South China Sea Surface Water(SCSSW),the South China Sea Subsurface Water(SCSUW)and the Kuroshio Branch Water(KBW).The MZCW appears in the near surface layer along the western coast of Taiwan Strait,showing low-salinity(<32.0)tongues near the Minjiang River Estuary and the Xiamen Bay mouth.The TSMW covers most upper layer of the investigation area.The SCSSW is mainly distributed in the upper layer of the southwestern Taiwan Strait,beneath which is the SCSUW.The KBW is a high temperature(core value of 26.36℃)and high salinity(core value of 34.62)water mass located southeast of the Taiwan Bank and partially in the central Taiwan Strait.
