Professor An Yin,a world-class geologist,was well known for his significant contribution to the understanding of tectonic evolution of the Earth,especially the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau(Yin A and Harrison,2000;Yin A,2006),and other planets and their satellites,such as Enceladus and Europa(Yin A et al.,2016;Leonard et al.,2018).He applied mechanical analysis to structural geology in order to understand the deformation process,not only on terrestrial planets(Yin A,2012),but also on icy Charon,the largest moon of Pluto(Chen HZ and Yin A,2022).He passed away unexpectedly in the afternoon of July 12,2023 while teaching a summer field camp at White Mountain,California,USA.

Early Yanshanian(Jurassic) granitoids are widespread in the Nanling Range,South *** large granitic batholiths commonly crop out in the center of the Nanling Range(corresponding geographically to the central and northern parts of Guangdong Province),many small stocks occur in the southern part of Jiangxi *** of the small stocks are associated closely with economically significant rare-metal deposits(W,Sn,Nb,Ta).Here we report the results for biotite granites and two-mica granites from three Yanshanian stocks of the Longyuanba ***-ICPMS U-Pb dating of zircon yields an age of 156.1±2.1 Ma for Xiaomubei biotite granite,and U-Pb zircon dating using SIMS yields an age of 156.7±1.2 Ma for Longyuanba-Chengjiang biotite granite and 156.4±1.3 Ma for Jiangtoudong two-mica *** granites are silica-rich(SiO 2 =70%-79%),potassic(K 2 O/Na 2 O>1.9),and peraluminous(ASI=1.05-1.33).Associated samples are invariably enriched in Rb,Th,Pb and LREE,yet depleted in Ba,Nb,Sr,P and Ti,and their REE pattern shows a large fractionation between LREE and HREE((La/Yb) N =10.7-13.5) and a pronounced Eu negative anomaly(δEu=0.28-0.41).Two-mica granite samples are also silica-rich(SiO 2 =75%-79%),potassic(K 2 O/Na 2 O>1.2),and peraluminous(ASI=1.09-1.17).However,in contrast to the biotite granites,they are more enriched in Rb,Th,Pb and extremely depleted in Ba,Nb,Sr,P and Ti,and exhibit nearly flat((La/Yb) N =0.75-1.08) chondrite-normalized REE patterns characterized by strong Eu depletion(δEu=0.02-0.04) and clear tetrad effect(TE 1.3 =1.10-1.14).Biotite granites and two-mica granties have comparable Nd isotopic signatures,and their εNd(t) are concentrated in the 13.0 to 9.6 and 11.5 to 7.7 *** zircon Hf-O isotopes of both also show similarity(biotite granites:εHf(t)= 10.8-7.9,δ 18 O=7.98‰-8.89‰ and εHf(t)= 13.8 to 9.1,δ 18 O=8.31‰-10.08‰;two-mica granites:εHf(t)= 11.3 to 8.0,δ 18 O=7.91‰-9.77‰).The results show that both biotite and two-mica gra

Classic L2-norm-based waveform tomography is often plagued by insurmountable cycle skipping problems;as a result,the iterative inversion falls into local minima,yielding erroneous *** to the optimal transportation theory,we adopt a novel geometry-preserving misfit function based on the quadratic Wasserstein metric(W2-norm),which improves the stability and convexity of the inverse *** experiments illustrate that W2-norm-based full-waveform tomography has a larger convergence radius and a faster convergence rate than the L2-norm and can effectively mitigate cycle skipping *** apply this method to the Longmen Shan area and obtain a reliable lithospheric velocity *** tomographic results indicate that the crystalline crust underlying the Sichuan Basin wedges into the crustal interior of the Tibetan Plateau,and the mid-lower crust of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is characterized by low shear-wave velocities,indicating that ductile crustal flow and strong interactions between terranes jointly dominate the uplift behavior of the Longmen ***,we find that large earthquakes(e.g.,the Wenchuan and Lushan events)occur not only at the junction between high-and low-velocity regions but also in the transition zone from positive to negative radial *** findings improve our understanding of the mechanism responsible for large earthquakes in this region.

Considering the Neo-Tethyan tectonic process and the resulting environmental changes,a geodynamic model of“one-way train loading”is proposed to analyze the formation and evolution mechanism of the Persian Gulf Superbasin with the most abundant hydrocarbons in the *** Persian Gulf Superbasin has long been in a passive continental margin setting since the Late Paleozoic in the process of unidirectional subduction,forming a superior regional space of hydrocarbon *** the Jurassic-Cretaceous,the Persian Gulf Superbasin drifted slowly at low latitudes,and developed multiple superimposed source-reservoir-caprock assemblages as a combined result of several global geological events such as the Hadley Cell,the Equatorial Upwelling Current,and the Jurassic True Polar *** collision during the evolution of the foreland basin since the Cenozoic led to weak destruction,which was conducive to the preservation of oil and ***,it is be-lieved that the slow drifting and long retention in favorable climate zone of the continent are the critical factors for hydrocarbon ***,the prospects of hydrocarbon potential in other continents in the Neo-Tethyan were proposed.

Systematical analyses of data from GEOROC and PetDB database show that large amount of Cenozoic andesites occurred in the various oceanic environments such as mid-oceanic ridge,plumerelated island and oceanic *** this study,we employed the geochemical data of 351 mid-ocean ridge andesites(MORA),2539 plume-related andesites(PRA)and 3488 oceanic arc andesites(OAA)from the database to discuss the relationship between andesite tectonic settings and their geochemical features,thereby making an attempt to construct tectonic discrimination *** on the data-driven pattern,all available elements were employed to derive logratios for the possible coordinates,and the overlap-rate calculation was adopted to evaluate the discrimination effect of more than 330000 prospective ***,four tectonic discrimination diagrams have been successfully established to identify MORA,PRA and OAA,which can be utilized to identify the original settings of andesite with an age range from Cenozoic to Archean a certain *** these diagrams,PRA is mainly distinguished by high LREE/HREE ratio due to enriched mantle ***,OAA is mainly characterized by high LILE/HFSE ratio,which reveals that fluids derived from subducted slab play an important role in forming oceanic arc ***,the petrogenesis of andesites is closely related to their tectonic ***,it should be noted that those andesites formed in both continental and oceanic environments cannot be effectively distinguished using these *** strongly recommend integrating the discrimination diagrams result with other geological information to reach a comprehensive interpretation of evolution history with those ancient *** paper presents a case study which suggests that data-driven method is a powerful tool for solving geological problems in this’big data’era.

This paper reports the results of secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS) U-Pb dating of rutile within eclogitic xenoliths from the Early Cretaceous adakitic rocks in the Xuzhou-Huaibei area of China and discusses the geological significance of these new dates. The dating of rutile from pargasite-bearing eclogite and garnet clinopyroxenite(retrograde eclogite) yielded ages of 209 ± 25 and 132 ± 7 Ma, respectively. The former is consistent with the timing of the first stage of exhumation of the Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt and provides evidence of crustal thickening within the southeastern margin of the North China Craton during the early Mesozoic, related to subduction and collision between the Yangtze and North China cratons. The latter age is similar to the timing of emplacement of the hosting intrusion and indicates that the rutile U-Pb system was triggered after uplifting by the intrusion of the hosting magmas. It implies that garnet clinopyroxenite was previously at the depth where the temperature was above the rutile U-Pb closure temperature.

The physical and chemical properties of soils are closely controlled by the climate factors and thus are significant for paleoclimate *** this study,two adjacent soil profiles(LP and LPM) with different slopes from Yan'an,Shaanxi Province,were investigated using magnetic methods to determine the impact of topography on magnetic properties of *** results show that although LP and LPM have similar magnetic minerals and grain size distribution,both the average and maximum magnetic susceptibility(x) of LP are almost doubled compared to those of *** addition,the ratios of susceptibility enhancement to the background(Ex) for LP and LPM are 2.27 and 2.04,respectively;the ratios of saturation isothermal remnant magnetization(SIRM) enhancement(ESIRM) for these two profiles are 1.80 and 1.86,*** slopes of the linear regression trends between frequency-dependent susceptibility(χFD) and "hard" isothermal remnant magnetization(HIRM)(χFD/HIRM),Anhysteretic remnant magnetization(ARM) and HIRM(ARM/HIRM),are almost free from the effect of parent material.χFD/HIRMs for LP and LPM are 28.7×10x5 and 28.9×10x5 A mx1,respectively;ARM/HIRMs are 0.35 and 0.33 for LP and LPM,*** results demonstrate that parameters,χFD/HIRM,ARM/HIRM,Ex and ESIRM,are affected less by parent material and topography,which are better than the x for bulk samples to indicate the paleoclimatic conditions(e.g.,the paleorainfall) in a large-scale region.

Geochemical and Mineral Characteristics of Jurassic Volcanic Rocks from ODP Sites 304, 1149, and 801:Implications for Magmatic evolution in the Northwest Pacific

The regular variations in magmatic activities along the Northwest Pacific plate have been little studied in spite of their importance. In this contribution, systematic analyses were conducted on tholeiitic basalts from three Ocean Drilling Program sites(Sites 304, 1149, and 801), including the petrographic features, major and trace elements, Nd isotopic compositions, and mineral structure and compositions of whole rocks. Volcanic rocks from Sites 304, 1149, and 801 belong to tholeiites and exhibit depleted light rare earth elements(LREE), large ion lithophile elemental contents(LILE), and relatively depleted Nd isotopic ratios(143Nd/144Nd=0.513139-0.513211), similar to those of normal mid-ocean ridge basalts(NMORB). Comprehensive data on mineral compositions, whole-rock geochemistry, and geochronology demonstrate that a regular variation trend exists in the north-south direction along the Northwest Pacific plate. The 143 Nd/144 Nd values(0.513139-0.513211) and trace-element ratios for whole rocks(Sm/Th=15.35-30.00; Zr/Hf=28.53-35.76; Zr/Y=2.58-3.67; Th/La=0.04-0.06; Th/Y=0.33-0.70), as well as the trace-element ratios(Zr/Hf, La/Yb, Ti/Zr) of clinopyroxenes from Sites 1149 and 801 tholeiites show larger variations compared to those from Site 304 tholeiites(143Nd/144Nd=0.513185-0.513195; Sm/Th=18.19-20.58; Zr/Hf=31.07-33.26; Zr/Y=2.62-3.03; Th/La=0.05-0.06; Th/Y=0.48-0.57). Mineral zoning textures were obvious in tholeiites from Sites 1149 and 801 but were rarely observed in Site *** regular features were likely attributed to the differences in the heterogeneity of the magma source,the process of magmatic evolution, the plate-spreading rate, and the effective and ineffective mixing.

Using newly determined Sm isotopic abundances for correcting the isobaric interference of 144Sm on 144Nd and the established mass bias relationship between Sm and Nd, a series of in situ Nd isotopic measurements were conducted for relatively high Nd concentrations of natural geological materials, including apatite, titanite, monazite and perovskite on a Neptune multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS), coupled to a 193 nm ArF excimer laser ablation system. The results show that Ce has no significant influence on the precision and accuracy of Nd isotopic analyses for LREE-enriched geological minerals and that our approach is efficient in obtaining reliable 143Nd/144Nd and 147Sm/144Nd ratios for those materials with Sm/Nd<1 (147Sm/144Nd<0.6). When combined with trace element and U-Pb isotope data, the in situ Nd isotopic data can provide important information on geological processes.
