The effects of delayed mating on the copulation duration, female fertility, fecundity, egg fertility, longevity and the number days alive after mating of females of diamondback moth （DBM）, Plutella xylostella, were studied. When male mating was delayed, the female fertility, fecundity, egg fertility, longevity and number days alive after mating of DBM decreased, and there was a negative correlation between the age of the moth with those variables except copulation duration. When female mating was delayed, the female fertility, fecundity, percent egg fertility and number days alive after mating of DBM also decreased, but the longevity increased, which also showed a negative relationship between the age of the moth with the variables except copulation duration and longevity. When both males and females delayed mating, the female fertility and fecundity decreased; egg fertility was affected marginally, and the longevity of females increased. The moth age was negatively correlated with those variables.

Pheromones are communication chemicals and regulatory signals used by animals and represent unique tools for organisms to mediate behaviors and make“decisions”to maximize their *** plasticity refers to the innate capacity of a species to tolerate a greater breadth of environmental conditions across which it adapts to improve its survival,reproduction,and *** pinewood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus,an invasive nematode species,was accidentally introduced from North America into Japan,China,and Europe;however,few studies have investigated its pheromones and phenotypic plasticity as a natural ***,we demonstrated a novel phenomenon,in which nematodes under the condition of pheromone presence triggered increased reproduction in invasive strains(JP1,JP2,CN1,CN2,EU1,and EU2),while it simultaneously decreased reproduction in native strains(US1 and US2).The bidirectional effect on fecundity,mediated by presence/absence of pheromones,is henceforth termed pheromone-regulative reproductive plasticity(PRRP).We further found that synthetic ascaroside asc-C5(ascr#9),the major pheromone component,plays a leading role in PRRP and identified 2 candidate receptor genes,Bxydaf-38 and Bxysrd-10,involved in perceiving *** results suggest that plasticity of reproductive responses to pheromones in pinewood nematode may increase its fitness in novel environments following *** opens up a new perspective for invasion biology and presents a novel strategy of invasion,suggesting that pheromones,in addition to their traditional roles in chemical signaling,can influence the reproductive phenotype among native and invasive *** addition,this novel mechanism could broadly explain,through comparative studies of native and invasive populations of animals,a potential underlying factor behind of the success of other biological invasions.

Three-finger toxins （TFTs） are well-recognized non- enzymatic venom proteins found in snakes. However, although TFTs exhibit accelerated evolution, the drivers of this evolution remain poorly understood. The structural complexes between long-chain α-neurotoxins, a subfamily of TFTs, and their nicotinic acetylcholine receptor targets have been determined in previous research, providing an opportunity to address such questions. In the current study, we observed several previously identified positively selected sites （PSSs） and the highly variable C-terminal loop of these toxins at the toxin/receptor interface. Of interest, analysis of the molecular adaptation of the toxin-recognition regions in the corresponding receptors provided no statistical evidence for positive selection. However, these regions accumulated abundant amino acid variations in the receptors from the prey of snakes, suggesting that accelerated substitution of TFTs could be a consequence of adaptation to these variations. To the best of our knowledge, this atypical evolution, initially discovered in scorpions, is reported in snake toxins for the first time and may be applicable for the evolution of toxins from other venomous animals.

Microcapsules of sex pheromone of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) were synthesized through complex coacervation using gelatin and gum arabic as wall-forming materials. The encapsulated pheromone released from these microcapsules into the air was monitored over six weeks in the field. Results of a field trial show that the attractiveness of microcapsules was superior to that of rubber septa loaded with the same amount of pheromone. The mating disruption efficiency of the pheromone treatment was estimated through comparing numbers of moths captured in pheromone-baited traps placed in pheromone treatment fields and pesticide treatment fields. The estimated mating disruption efficiency of the pheromone treatments ranged from 76.94% to 98.67% during the season. This study shows that pheromone microcapsules might provide a new method for P. xylostella control.

Identification, isolation and characterization of the antifeedant constituent of Clausena anisata against Helicoverpa armigera （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae）

Hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol and water extracts of Clausena anisata [（Willd.） Hook E Ex Benth] leaves and roots were evaluated against Helicoverpa armigera （Hubner） for antifeedant activities. Antifeedant activity was confirmed, and was found to be higher in root extracts than those of the leaf. Chloroform and petroleum ether extracts of the root showed strongest antifeedant activities （DC50s [concentration （C） causing 50% deterrence compared with the control] 0.014% and 0.016% respectively）, and root extracts were fractionated using silica gel column chromatography. One fraction of the chloroform and one of the petroleum ether root extracts was active; and on the basis of mass spectroscopy and ^1H and ^13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data, the active compounds in the two fractions were confirmed to be identical, and identified as osthol [2H-1-Benzopyran-2-one, 7-methoxy-8-（3-methyl-2-butenyl）]. The highest concentration of osthol was found in the chloroform root extract. Antifeedant activities of the root extracts, as measured by DC50 values, were highly correlated with their osthol contents. Approximately 99% of the variation in bioactivity of the root extracts could be accounted for by variation in osthol content; osthol therefore, appeared to be an antifeedant component of C. anisata to H. armigera. This may provide a new approach to managing this pest.

The microdomains of plasmodesmata,specialized cell-wall channels responsible for communications between neighboring cells,are composed of various plasmodesmata-located proteins(PDLPs)and ***,we found that,among all PDLP or homologous proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana genome,PDLP5 and PDLP7 possessed a C-terminal sphingolipid-binding motif,with the latter being the only member that was significantly upregulated upon turnip mosaic virus and cucumber mosaic virus ***7mutant plants exhibited significantly reduced callose deposition,larger plasmodesmata diameters,and faster viral *** plants exhibited increased glucosidase activity but no change in callose synthase ***7 interacted specifically with glucan endo-1,3-β-glucosidase 10(BG10).Consistently,higher levels of callose deposition and slower virus transmission in bg10 mutants were *** interaction between PDLP7 and BG10 was found to depend on the presence of the Gnk2-homologous 1(Gn K2-1)domain at the N terminus of PDLP7 with Asp-35,Cys-42,Gln-44,and Leu-116 being *** vitro supplementation of callose was able to change the conformation of the Gn K2-1 *** data suggest that the Gn K2-1 domain of PDLP7,in conjunction with callose and BG10,plays a key role in plasmodesmata opening and closure,which is necessary for intercellular movement of various molecules.

Dominance relationships between males and their associated traits are usually heritable and have implications for sexual selection in *** particular,social dominance and its related male pheromones are heritable in inbred mice;thus,we wondered whether epigenetic changes due to altered levels of DNA methylation determine ***,we used C57BL/6 male mice to establish a social dominance-subordination relationship through chronic dyadic encounters,and this relationship and pheromone covariation occurred in their offspring,indicative of *** transcriptome sequencing and whole-genome DNA methylation profiling of the sperm of both generations,we found that differential methylation of many genes was induced by social dominance-subordination in sires and could be passed on to the *** methylated genes were mainly related to growth and development processes,neurodevelopment,and cellular *** expression of the genes with similar functions in whole-genome methylation/bisulfite sequencing was also differentiated by social dominance-subordination,as revealed by *** particular,the gene Dennd1a,which regulates neural signaling,was differentially methylated and expressed in the sperm and medial prefrontal cortex in paired males before and after dominance-subordination establishment,suggesting the potential epigenetic control and inheritance of social dominance-related *** suggest that social dominance might be passed on to male offspring through sperm DNA methylation and that the differences could potentially affect male competition in offspring by affecting the development of thenervous system.

Cockroaches are worldwide indoor pests carrying microorganisms of medical importance. German cockroaches （Blattella germanica） were sampled in five habitats （hospital, restaurant, office home, and market） in Beijing, and the bacteria were isolated from their external surface and alimentary tract and identified using a Biolog identification system. Cockroach densities significantly differed among habitats （market 〉 home 〉 office 〉 restaurant 〉 hospital）. However, no significant differences in bacterial abundance carried by individual German cockroaches （of either sex） were found among habitats. The bacterial abundance in the gut was significantly higher than that on the surface. There were no significant differences in bacterial species richness observed among habitats, sex, carrying position or their interaction. Cluster analysis showed that cockroach densities and bacterial abundance found in the market differed significantly from the other four habitats. The bacterial diversity was not significantly reduced in sensitive facilities such as hospital and restaurant, even though pesticide and bactericide were more frequently applied there. The implications of these findings were discussed in this article.

A comprehensive understanding of phylogeography requires the integration of knowledge across different organisms,ecosystems,and geographic ***,a critical knowledge gap exists in the arid biota of the vast Asian *** narrow this gap,here we test an“out-of-Central Asia”hypothesis for the desert scorpion Mesobuthus mongolicus by combining Bayesian phylogeographic reconstruction and ecological niche *** analyses of one mitochondrial and three nuclear loci and molecular dating revealed that *** represents a coherent lineage that diverged from its most closely related lineage in Central Asia about 1.36 Ma and underwent radiation ever *** phylogeographic reconstruction indicated that the ancestral population dispersed from Central Asia gradually eastward to the Gobi region via the Junggar Basin,suggesting that the Junggar Basin has severed as a corridor for Quaternary faunal exchange between Central Asia and East *** major dispersal events occurred probably during interglacial periods(around 0.8 and 0.4 Ma,respectively)when climatic conditions were analogous to present-day status,under which the scorpion achieved its maximum distributional *** underwent demographic expansion during the Last Glacial Maximum,although the predicted distributional areas were smaller than those at present and during the Last *** of desert ecosystems in northwest China incurred by intensified aridification might have opened up empty habitats that sustained population *** results extend the spatiotemporal dimensions of trans-Eurasia faunal exchange and suggest that species’adaptation is an important determinant of their phylogeographic and demographic responses to climate changes.
