Grain yield stability analysis using parametric and nonparametric statistics in oat(Avena sativa L.)genotypes in Ethiopia

Background:The performance of oat genotypes differs across environments due to variations in biotic and abiotic ***,evaluation of oat genotypes across diverse environments is very important to identify superior and stable genotypes for yield ***:The study aimed to assess the interaction(genotype-by-environment interaction;GEI)effect and determine the stability of grain yield in oat(Avena sativa L.)genotypes in Ethiopia using parametric and nonparametric stability ***-four oat genotypes were evaluated in nine environments using a randomized complete block design replicated three ***:The pooled analysis of the variance of grain yield showed significant variations among genotypes,environments,and their interaction *** GEI revealed the rank order change of genotypes across *** environment main effect captured 44.62%of the total grain yield variance,while genotype and GEI effects explained 28.84%and 26.54%of the total grain yield variance,*** grain yield stability was assessed based on 12 parametric and two nonparametric stability *** results indicated that genotypes with superior grain yield-showed stable performance on the basis of the stability parameters of the genotypic superiority index(P_(i)),the Perkins and Jinks adjusted linear regression coefficient(B_(i)),and the yield stability index(YSI),indicating that selection using these stability parameters would be efficient for grain yield enhancement in oat ***'s rank correlation coefficients also showed that the stability parameters of P_(i),B_(i),and YSI had a significant positive association with grain ***,grain yield had an inverse correlation with the stability parameters of standard deviation,deviation from regression (S_(di)^(2)),the Hernandez desirability index(D_(ji)),Wricke ecovalence(W_(i)),the Shukla stability variance(σ_(i)^(2)),the AMMI stability value(ASV),and environmental var

The bits and power allocation model of adaptive power-rate mixture for multi-user multi-server power-line communication systems was analyzed with the restrictions of maximal total power,fixed rate for each real time (RT) user,minimal rate for each non-real time (NRT) user,maximal bits and power for each subcarrier in each orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol. An algorithm of resource dynamic allocation in the first OFDM symbol of each frame and resource optimal adjustment in the latter OFDM symbol of each frame was proposed. In the first OFDM symbol of every frame,resource is firstly assigned for RT users so as to minimize their total used power until satisfying their fixed rates; secondly the remainder resource of power and subcarriers are assigned for NRT users so as to minimize their total used power until satisfying their minimal rates also; lastly the remainder resource is again assigned for NRT users according to the proportional fairness strategy so as to maximize their total assigning rate. In the latter OFDM symbol of each frame,bits are swapped and power is adjusted for every user based on the resource allocation results of anterior OFDM symbol. The algorithm is tested in the typical power-line channel scenarios and the simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better performances than the classical multi-user resource allocation algorithms and it realizes the multiple aims of multi-user multi-server resource allocation for power-line communication systems.

Significance of dormant forms of Helicobacter pylori in ulcerogenesis

Nearly half of the global population are carriers of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori),a Gram-negative bacterium that persists in the healthy human stomach. H. pylori can be a pathogen and causes development of peptic ulcer disease in a certain state of the macroorganism. It is well established that H. pylori infection is the main cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease(PUD). Decontamination of the gastric mucosa with various antibiotics leads to H. pylori elimination and longer remission in this disease. However,the reasons for repeated detection of H. pylori in recurrent PUD after its successful eradication remain unclear. The reason for the redetection of H. pylori in recurrent PUD can be either reinfection or ineffective anti-Helicobacter therapy. The administration of antibacterial drugs can lead not only to the emergence of resistant strains of microorganisms,but also contribute to the conversion of H. pylori into the resting(dormant) state. The dormant forms of H. pylori have been shown to play a potential role in the development of relapses of PUD. The paper discusses morphological H. pylori forms,such as S-shaped,C-shaped,U-shaped,and coccoid ones. The authors proposes the classification of H. pylori according to its morphological forms and viability.

We evaluated the potential impact of future climate change on spring maize and single-crop rice in northeastern China （NEC） by employing climate and crop models. Based on historical data, diurnal temperature change exhibited a distinct negative relationship with maize yield, whereas minimum temperature correlated positively to rice yield. Corresponding to the evaluated climate change derived from coupled climate models included in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 （CMIP5） under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 scenario （RCP4.5）, the projected maize yield changes for three future periods [2010-39 （period 1）, 2040-69 （period 2）, and 2070-99 （period 3）] relative to the mean yield in the baseline period （1976-2005） were 2.92%, 3.11% and 2.63%, respectively. By contrast, the evaluated rice yields showed slightly larger increases of 7.19%, 12.39%, and 14.83%, respectively. The uncertainties in the crop response are discussed by considering the uncertainties obtained from both the climate and the crop models. The range of impact of the uncertainty became markedly wider when integrating these two sources of uncertainty. The probabilistic assessments of the evaluated change showed maize yield to be relatively stable from period 1 to period 3, while the rice yield showed an increasing trend over time. The results presented in this paper suggest a tendency of the yields of maize and rice in NEC to increase （but with great uncertainty） against the background of global warming, which may offer some valuable guidance to government policymakers.

Skeletochronology is a method commonly used for estimating the age of amphibians and reptiles in the wild. However, the number of lines of arrested growth （LAGs） does not necessarily reflect age in some species. We validated the applicability of this method to an endangered eublepharid gecko, Goniurosaurus kuroiwae, then inferred its longevity and age structures in wild populations. We classified young geckos into three groups using previously published data for early growth： Group 1 contained hatchlings before the first winter, Group 2 contained hatchlings after the first win- ter, and Group 3 included yearlings after the second winter. LAG numbers in these groups were then compared. All individuals in Group 1 possessed a single LAG, which was considered as a hatching line. Most individuals in Groups 2 and 3 possessed one and two additional LAGs, respectively （LAG1 and LAG2）, corroborating the notion that LAGs are formed annually. A few geckos exhibited fewer LAGs than expected. Analysis of variations in LAG and marrow cavity diameter demonstrated that in animals with fewer LAGs, endosteal resorption or fusion of hatching line and LAG1 had occurred. LAG2 was never lost by endosteal resorption and was identifiable by its diameter. Thus, the age of adult geckos could be determined by counting LAGs outward from LAG2. Application of this method to wild populations re- vealed that the longevity of this species is not less than 83 months, but that almost all individuals in fragmented habitats die before 50 months, suggesting lower population sustainability in such habitats.

Zhengzhou is a developing city in China, that is heavily polluted by high levels of particulate matter. In this study, fine particulate matter （PM2.5） was collected and analyzed for their chemical composition （soluble ions, elements, elemental carbon （EC） and organic carbon （OC）） in an industrial district of Zhengzhou in 2010. The average concentrations of PM2.5 were 181, 122, 186 and 211 μg/m3 for spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively, with an annual average of 175 μg/m3, far exceeding the PM2.5 regulation of USA National Air Quality Standards （15 μg/m3）. The dominant components of PM2.5 in Zhengzhou were secondary ions （sulphate and nitrate） and carbon fractions. Soluble ions, total carbon and elements contributed 41%, 13% and 3% of PM2.5 mass, respectively. Soil dust, secondary aerosol and coal combustion, each contributing about 26%, 24% and 23% of total PM2.5 mass, were the major sources of PM2.5, according to the result of positive matrix factorization analysis. A mixed source of biomass burning, oil combustion and incineration contributed 13% of PM2.5. Fine particulate matter arising from vehicles and industry contributed about 10% and 4% of PM2.5, respectively.

The honeybee （Apis mellifera） is a social insect with strong sensory capacity and diverse behavioral repertoire and is recognized as a good model organism for studying the neurobiological basis of learning and memory. In this study, we analyzed the changes in microRNA （miRNA） and messenger RNA （mRNA） following maze-based visual learning using next-generation small RNA sequencing and Solexa/lllumina Digital Gene Expression tag profiling （DGE）. For small RNA sequencing, we obtained 13 367 770 and 13 132 655 clean tags from the maze and control groups, respectively. A total of 40 differentially expressed known miRNAs were detected between these two samples, and all of them were up-regulated in the maze group compared to the control group. For DGE, 5 681 320 and 5 939 855 clean tags were detected from the maze and control groups, respectively. There were a total of 388 differentially expressed genes between these two samples, with 45 genes up-regulated and 343 genes down-regulated in the maze group, compared to the control group. Additionally, the expression levels of 10 differentially expressed genes were confirmed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （qRT-PCR） and the expression trends of eight of them were consistent with the DGE result, although the degree of change was lower in amplitude. The integrative analysis of miRNA and mRNA expression showed that, among the 40 differentially expressed known miRNAs and 388 differentially expressed genes, 60 pairs of miRNA/mRNA were identified as co-expressed in our present study. These results suggest that both miRNA and mRNA may play a pivotal role in the process of learning and memory in honeybees. Our sequencing data provide comprehensive miRNA and gene expression information for maze-based visual learning, which will facilitate understanding of the molecular mechanisms of honeybee learning and memory.
