Background: Hybrid Ameloblastoma is a rare type of ameloblastoma that is presently receiving attention in some quarters. Altogether, less than 30 cases have been reported in the scientific literature, thus calling for the need to report more cases in order to add to the body of knowledge on this lesion. This case report is aimed to add to the number of cases that are building up in the scientific literature. Materials and Methods: A 50-year-old female presented with a 3-year history of an anterior mandibular swelling extending from the body of the mandible on the right to the body of the mandible on the left. Orthopantomograph of the lesion revealed a mixed radiolucent and radiopaque lesion that extended from the distal region of the right mandibular second premolar to distal region of the left mandibular second molar. Segmental mandibulectomy with immediate replacement with reconstruction was undertaken. Results: Specimen which was subjected to histopathologic examination reported a diagnosis of Keratinizing Follicular Ameloblastoma and Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma with Osteoplasia, consistent with a diagnosis of Hybrid Ameloblastoma. There has been no sign of recurrence 7 months after a regular follow-up and the patient is planned for a long term follow-up. Conclusion: Besides histological details that combine both conventional ameloblastoma and desmoplastic ameloblastoma, the present case of hybrid ameloblastoma bears similar clinical features as well as treatment modalities to that of conventional solid multicystic ameloblastoma.

Gingival adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignancy. We describe the diagnosis and treatment of a 43 year- old woman who presented with a persistent oral ulcer for approximately 1 year, and subsequent pain in the left posterior maxillary region. Clinical examination revealed an ulcer in the left upper molar gingiva, with swelling in the region from the second premolar to the third molar. X-ray images demonstrated the involvement of the maxillary alveolar bone. The histopathological and immunohistochemical features were diagnostic of ACC. ACC is often presented as a gingival lesion; thus, it may easily be neglected by patients. The identification of this tumor using specific pathological analyses prevents misdiagnosis and enables clinicians to determine the appropriate treatment. In this case, no recurrence or distant metastasis was observed after 2 years of follow-up.

Background: the quality of life (QoL) of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with its limited survival, can be affected by chemotherapy-induced toxicity. The main objective was to evaluate the effect of introducing ocoxin oral solution (OOS) in combination with standard therapy on quality of life. Methods: Thirty patients were enrolled in an exploratory, prospective, single-centre clinical trial in the oncology department of “Hermanos Ameijeiras” University Hospital in Havana, Cuba. Quality of life was measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and toxicity was assessed using the NCI-CTC-AE classification version 5.0. Results: There was stability in the scores over time for overall QoL and the functional scale criteria, while in terms of symptoms, fatigue, pain and loss of appetite were reduced. No grade 3 - 4 adverse events (AEs) were recorded, and only 14.9% of toxicities were classified as grade 2, and these were considered to be unrelated to OOS. Biochemical and nutritional parameters were normalised at 12 months compared to the baseline values. Conclusions: This clinical study is the first report of the use of OOS in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, and demonstrates that it is able to maintain optimal quality of life with reduced severity of toxicity during and after combination treatment with gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

During the initiation, promotion, and progression of multi-step carcinogenesis, changes in specific host immuno- logical factors have been observed. Although immunology of oral cancer has long been focused on antigens and lymphocytes, the fact remains that the antigen presenting cells, like the Langerhans cells （LCs） of the epithelium are initiators and modulators of the immune response. LCs as sentinels of immune response, have been investigated in several orai mucosal diseases, including cancer. Inadequate presentation of tumor antigens by host dendritic cells is one potential mechanism that allows tumor progression, tn this review, the role of LCs in OSCC is discussed. Elucidation of the role of APCs, in particular LCs, may help to better understand the mechanisms underlying anti-tumour immune responses and, improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer immunity in tumour-bearing hosts. This section focuses on the roles LCs in the immunity of cancer and how cancer bypasses the dendritic cell-mediated immune responses, are discussed. Subsequently, the effects of tumor microenviornment on LC＇s and their therapeutic implications are elaborated.

ZM-66, a New Podophyllotoxin Derivative Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in K562/ADM Cells

Objective To investigate the anti-tumor effect of ZM-66 on multidrug-resistant leukemic cell line K562/ADM. Methods The K562/ADM cells were treated with varying concentrations （0, 1, 2, 4×10^-3 mmol/L） of ZM-66 or etoposide for 24 hours. The proliferation was detected by Sulforhodamine B Sodium Salt （SRB） assay and apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry analysis and fluorescent staining. In addition, the expression levels of p53 and bax genes in K562/ADM cells were detected by RT-PCR analysis. The level of P-glycoprotein （P-gp）, P53 and Bax protein in K562/ADM cells were detected by Western blot assay. Results SRB assay demonstrated that etoposide had little inhibitory effect on K562/ADM cells, whereas ZM-66 （1, 2, 4×10^-3 mmol/L） had significantly inhibitory effect on K562/ADM cells （all P〈0.01）. The acridine orange/propidium iodide dual staining showed that there were typical condensation of chromatin and nuclear fragmentation nuclei with red color in ZM-66 treated cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that there was a significantly increase of apoptotic cells i~ K562/KDM cells after treated with ZM-66. RT-PCR showed that the p53 and bax mRNA expression levels in K562/ADM cells treated with ZM-66 at 1, 2, 4×10^-3 mmol/L were higher than those in the cell without treatment. Western blot showed that the P53 and Bax protein expression levels in K562/ADM cells treated with ZM-66 at 2, 4x 10 s mmol/L were higher than those in the cell without treatment. But the P-gp protein expression level in K562/ADM cells treated with ZM-66 at 2, 4×10^-3 mmol/L was gradually lower than those in the cell without treatment. Conclusion ZM-66 is able to induce cell death by apoptosis in vitro, as a result of the reverse of theapoptosis resistance in drug-resistant K562/ADM cells by modulating expression of key factors associated with apoptosis induction.

Polygonum cuspidatum is used as a traditional medicinal herb for the therapy of various diseases including several types of cancers. In the present study, we focused on addressing the anti-cancer activity and molecular mechanism of methanol extract of Polygonum cuspidatum (MEPC) in HSC-2 human oral cancer cells. The effect of MEPC on oral cancer cells was estimated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-20yl)-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulphophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay, 4’-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining and Western blot analysis. MEPC inhibited the cell viability and induced apoptosis through the induction of death receptor (DR) 5. MEPC also increased the expression of C/EBP homologous protein/growth arrest and the DNA damage-inducible gene 153 (CHOP), a transcription factor induced by ER stress. Thus, we concluded that the induction of CHOP leading to DR5 up-regulation is required for the anti-cancer activity of MEPC in HSC-2 cells and MEPC may be a promising drug candidate for oral cancer.

Osteoporotic hip fracture is associated with significant trabecular bone loss, which is typically characterized as low bone density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry （DXA） and altered microstructure by micro-computed tomography （pCT）. Emerging morphological analysis techniques, e.g. individual trabecula segmentation （ITS）, can provide additional insights into changes in plate-like and rod-like trabeculae, two major micro- structural types serving different roles in determining bone strength. Using ITS, we evaluated trabecular microstructure of intertrochanteric bone cores obtained from 23 patients undergoing hip replacement surgery for intertrochanteric fracture and 22 cadaveric controls. Micro-finite element （~FE） analyses were performed to further understand how the abnormalities seen by ITS might translate into effects on bone strength. ITS analyses revealed that, near fracture site, plate-like trabeculae were seriously depleted in fracture patients, but trabecular rod volume was maintained. Besides, decreased plate area and rod length were observed in fracture patients. Fracture patients also showed decreased elastic moduli and shear moduli of trabecular bone. These results provided evidence that in intertrochanteric hip fracture, preferential loss of plate-like trabeculae led to more rod-like microstructure and deteriorated mechanical competence adjacent to the fracture site, which increased our understanding of the biomechanical pathogenesis of hip fracture in osteoporosis.
