The presence of excessive reactive oxygen species(Ros)at a skin wound site is an important factor affecting wound *** scavenging,which regulates the ROS microenvironment,is essential for wound *** this study,we used novel electrospun PCL/gelatin/arbutin(PCL/G/A)nanofibrous membranes as wound dressings,with PCL/gelatin(PCL/G)as the backbone,and plantderived arbutin(hydroquinone-β-D-glucopyranoside,ARB)as an effective antioxidant that scavenges ROos and inhibits bacterial infection in *** loading of ARB increased the mechanical strength of the nanofibres,with a water vapour transmission rate of more than 2500g/(m^(2)×24h),and the water contact angle decreased,indicating that hydrophilicity and air permeability were significantly *** release and degradation experiments showed that the nanofibre membrane controlled the drug release and exhibited favourable *** experiments showed that the PCL/G/A nanofibre membranes were biocompatible,and DPPH and ABTS+radical scavenging experiments indicated that PCL/G/A could effectively scavenge ROS to reflect the antioxidant *** addition,haemostasis experiments showed that PCL/G/A had good haemostatic effects in vitro and in *** vivo animal wound closure and histological staining experiments demonstrated that PCL/G/A increased collagen deposition and remodelled epithelial tissue regeneration while showing good in vivo biocompatibility and *** conclusion,we successfully prepared a multifunctional wound dressing,PCL/G/A,for skin wound healing and investigated its potential role in wound healing,which is beneficial for the clinical translational application of phytomedicines.

Injuries Associated with Auto-Tricycle Crashes in an African City: Incidence and Pattern

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and pattern of injuries resulting from auto-tricycle crashes among patients in a tertiary referral centre in Ghana. Methods: Data were retrospectively extracted from hospital records of patients who got involved in auto-tricycle crashes and presented to the Accident and Emergency Centre of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), over a one-year period using a structured questionnaire. The gathered data were then entered into an electronic database and then analysed with SPSS version 20.0. Results: The incidence of injury following auto-tricycle crashes over the one-year period was 5.9% (95% CI: 4.9% - 7.0%) with a case fatality rate (FR) of 3.8% (95% CI: 1.3% - 8.7%). All the mortalities resulted from head and neck injuries and none of the patients involved wore a crash helmet. Only 5% of those studied wore crash helmets and were all drivers. Closed fractures accounted for 58% of the injuries, followed by open fractures, 28%. The most commonly fractured bones were the tibia/fibula, followed by the femur and then radius/ulna. The most common mechanism of injury was auto-tricycle toppling over (29%). Passengers were the most injured (48%), followed by drivers (37%) and pedestrians (15%). Most (72%) injuries among participants involved a single body part. On the injury severity scale, most (61%) of patients had minor trauma and 38% had major trauma. Conclusion: Auto-tricycle crashes account for 5.9% of injuries at the study site with a case fatality rate of 3.8%. Passengers had a higher injury rate (48%) than drivers (37%). Fractures of the tibia/fibula were most commonly associated with auto-tricycle crashes. Injuries to the head and neck were responsible for the deaths in the study participants and non-use of a crash helmet was associated with mortalities.

Bone–cartilage crosstalk:a conversation for understanding osteoarthritis

Although cartilage degradation is the characteristic feature of osteoarthritis （OA）, it is now recognized that the whole joint is involved in the progression of OA. In particular, the interaction （crosstalk） between cartilage and subchondral bone is thought to be a central feature of this process. The interface between articular cartilage and bone of articulating long bones is a unique zone, which comprises articular cartilage, below which is the calcified cartilage sitting on and intercalated into the subchondral bone plate. Below the subchondral plate is the trabecular bone at the end of the respective long bones. In OA, there are well- char described *** destructive tges in the ~cular cartilage, which parallel characteristic changes in the underlying hone, This review examines the evidence that biochemical and biomechanical signaling between these tissue compartments is important in OA disease progression and asks whether such signaling might provide possibilities for therapeutic intervention to halt or slow disease development.

Return to sport after lower limb arthroplasty-why not for all?

BACKGROUND Total hip and knee replacements are being performed in increasing numbers in progressively younger patients with higher activity demands. Many such patients have expectations of returning to athletic activity post-operatively yet are not always able to do so and the reasons behind this have not been extensively examined. We hypothesise that any reasons for a failure to return to athletic activity post-operatively are *** To quantify the return to athletic activity following lower limb joint arthroplasty and understand qualitative reasons for altered activity *** A single centre, single surgeon retrospective questionnaire for hip and knee arthroplasty patients under age 60 years, minimum two years post-surgery with exclusion criteria of multiple degenerative joint involvement and multiple medical co-morbidities. Outcomes were validated joint-specific(Oxford hip and knee) and lifestyle questionnaires [short form 12(SF-12) and University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA)] and an activity questionnaire assessing ability participation in athletic activity post-operatively. Statistical analysis was performed on the validated outcome data, including comparison between hip and knee replacements. Frequency tables were produced to quantify the different athletic activities participated in by *** Responses were received from 64 patients(80% response rate). There was a statistically significant improvement in Oxford hip and knee scores following surgery. SF-12 scores also improved for all patients, but no statistically significant difference was seen between joints(P = 0.88). Mean UCLA scores pre-operatively were 7.67 and at two years post-operatively were 7.69, with no statistically significant change(P = 0.91).
