Effect of the ITER FW Manufacturing Process on the Microstructure and Properties of a CuCrZr Alloy

The first wall （FW） is one of the core components in ITER. As the heat sink material, the CuCrZr alloy shall be properly jointed with beryllium and stainless steel. At present, the grains of CuCrZr are prone to coarsen seriously in the thermal cycle process of FW manufacturing, which has become a critical issue for ITER parties. To investigate the mirostructure and mechanical properties of the optimized CuCrZr alloy in the first wall fabricating thermal cycle, simulative experiments have been done in this study. The alloy ingot was forged and hot rolled into plates, and then solid solution annealed, cold rolled and aged for strengthening. Several heat treatments were done to the CuCrZr samples, and the changes of microstructure, micro-hardness and tensile strength were investigated. The results indicated that the original elongated grains had changed into equiaxed ones, and the vickers hardness had declined to about 60 after experiencing the process of CuCrZr/316L（N） bi-metallic plate manufacturing, either by hot isostatic pressing at a higher temperature or by explosion welding followed by solution annealing. Joining Be/CuCrZr by hot isostatic pressing acts as an aging process for CuCrZr, so after the simulated heat treatment, the hardness of the alloy increased to about 110 HV and the tensile yield strength at 250℃ rose to about 170 MPa. Meanwhile, the average grain size was controlled below 200μm.

The investigation of dust particle characteristics in fusion devices has become more and more imperative.In the HL-2A tokamak,the morphologies and compositions of dust particles are analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy（SEM） and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy（EDX） with mapping.The results indicate that the sizes of dust particles are in a range from 1 μm to 1 mm.Surprisingly,stainless steel spheres with a diameter of 2.5μm-30 μm are obtained.The production mechanisms of dust particles include flaking,disintegration,agglomeration,and arcing.In addition,dynamic characteristics of the flaking dust particles are observed by a CMOS fast framing camera and simulated by a computer program.Both of the results display that the ion friction force is dominant in the toroidal direction,while the centrifugal force is crucial in the radial direction.Therefore,the visible dust particles are accelerated toriodally by the ion friction force and migrated radially by the centrifugal force.The averaged velocity of the grain is on the order of^100 m/s.These results provide an additional supplement for one of critical plasma-wall interaction（PWI） issues in the framework of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor（ITER） programme.

The hypervapotron（HV）,as an enhanced heat transfer technique,will be used for ITER divertor components in the dome region as well as the enhanced heat flux first wall panels.W-Cu brazing technology has been developed at SWIP（Southwestern Institute of Physics）,and one W/CuCrZr/316 LN component of 450 mm×52 mm×166 mm with HV cooling channels will be fabricated for high heat flux（HHF） tests.Before that a relevant analysis was carried out to optimize the structure of divertor component elements.ANSYS-CFX was used in CFD analysis and ABAQUS was adopted for thermal-mechanical calculations.Commercial code FE-SAFE was adopted to compute the fatigue life of the component.The tile size,thickness of tungsten tiles and the slit width among tungsten tiles were optimized and its HHF performances under International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor（ITER） loading conditions were simulated.One brand new tokamak HL-2M with advanced divertor configuration is under construction in SWIP,where ITER-like flat-tile divertor components are adopted.This optimized design is expected to supply valuable data for HL-2M tokamak.

A multichannel methanoic acid （HCOOH, λ=432.5 μm） laser interferometer/polarimeter is being developed from the previous eight-channel hydrogen cyanide （HCN, λ=337 μm） laser interferometer in the HL-2A tokamak. A conventional Michelson-type interometer is used for the electron density measurement, and a Dodel-Kunz-type polarimeter is used for the Faraday rotation effect measurement, respectively. Each HCOOH laser can produce a linearly polarized radiation at a power lever of -30 mW, and a power stability 〈10% in 50 rain. A beam waist （diameter d0 ≈12.0 mm, about 200 mm away from the outlet） is finally determined through a chopping modulation technique. The latest optical layout of the interferometer/polarimeter has been finished, and the hardware data processing system based on the fast Fourier transform phase- comparator technique is being explored. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the diagnostic scheme, two associated bench simulation experiments were carried out in the laboratory, in which the plasma was simulated by a piece of polytetrafluoroethene plate, and the Faraday rotation effect was simulated by a rotating half-wave plate. Simulation results agreed well with the initial experimental conditions. At present, the HCOOH laser interferometer/polarimeter system is being assembled on HL-2A, and is planned to be applied in the 2014-2015 experimental campaign.

Transport Simulation of ECRH H-Mode Experiments on HL-2A Tokamak

Transport simulation of ECRH H-mode experiments on HL-2A tokamak is carried out using ONETWO code, the GLF23 and PEDESTAL models, along with TORAY code for ECRH. It is found that the initial electron and ion temperature profiles affect L-H transition significantly, and larger initial temperature gradient at the edge plasma benefits the transition. The simulation results show that it is possible to achieve ECRH H-mode with appropriate initial electron and ion temperature profiles under present discharge conditions on HL-2A tokamak. In addition, the pedestal density, electron temperature and pedestal width are predicted, and the evolutions of electron and ion temperature profile are calculated.

Using the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP, neutronic calculation analysis for China helium cooled ceramic breeder test blanket module （CN HCCB TBM） and the associated shield block （together called TBM-set） has been carried out based on the latest design of HCCB TBM-set and C-lite model. Key nuclear responses of HCCB TBM-set, such as the neutron flux, tritium production rate, nuclear heating and radiation damage, have been obtained and discussed. These nuclear performance data can be used as the basic input data for other analyses of HCCB TBM-set, such as thermal-hydraulics~ thermal-mechanics and safety analysis.

Toroidicity and shape dependence of peeling mode growth rates in axisymmetric toroidal plasmas

The growth rate of the peeling mode instability with large toroidal mode number is calculated for general axisymmetric toroidal plasmas, including tokamaks and the spherical toms （ST） equilibia by using formalism presented by Connor et al. Analytic equilibia with non-zero edge current density and quasi-uniform current profiles are assumed. It is found that in sharp D-shape tokamak plasma, the derivative of the safety factor with respect to the poloidal flux becomes very large, making the perturbed poloidal motion very large, in turn making a significant reduction of the growth rate of the peeling mode, similar to the X-point effect in diverted plasma. The large aspect ratio effect is also studied, which reduces the growth rate further.

In the previous analytical description of the neoclassical polarization current effect on the neoclassical tearing modes （NTMs）, it is usually assumed that the magnetic island is much larger than the finite-ion-banana-width （FBW）. This assumption is questionable when the experimentally observed seed island width of the NTMs is comparable to the FBW. We introduce a simple and direct theoretical method to investigate the FBW effect on the neoclassical polarization contribution to the NTM evolution in collisional plasmas. The results show that, the FBW effect can strongly modify the neoclassical polarization current profile near the island separatrix, and thus weaken its probably stabilizing effect on the NTMs.

We reproduce nonlinear behaviors,including frequency chirping and mode splitting,referred to as bump-on-tail instabilities.As has been reported in previous works,the generation and motion of phase-space hole-clump pairs in a kinetically driven,dissipative system can result in frequency chirping.We provide examples of frequency chirping,both with and without pure diffusion,in order to illustrate the role of the diffusion effect,which can suppress holes and clumps;Asymmetric frequency chirpings are produced with drag effect,which is essential to enhance holes,and suppress clumps.Although both diffusion and drag effect suppress the clumps,downward sweepings are observed,caused by a complicated interaction of diffusion and drag.In addition,we examine the discrepancies in frequency chirping between marginally unstable,and far from marginally unstable cases,which we elucidate by means of a dissipative system.In addition,mode splitting is also produced via BOT code for a marginal case with large diffusion.
