Electrothermal analysis of radiofrequency tissue ablation with flexible electrodes on large-curvature myocardium surfaces

Radiofrequency ablation(RFA) is a form of minimally invasive procedure that precisely ablates abnormal lesions or hyperplastic tissues through thermal energy generated by the radiofrequency current at the tip electrode of the flexible catheter, which aims to partially or fully restore the function of the corresponding tissues or organs. Accurate prediction and control of thermal fields are crucial for clinical thermal ablation to ensure precise control of the ablation lesion size and prevent excessive burning of healthy tissues. In this study, an axisymmetric analytical model is developed for the electrothermal analysis of RFA in the cambered tissue surface and verified with the finite element analysis(FEA), which incorporates both the thermal field induced by the radiofrequency current and Pennes' biothermal effect. This model utilizes analytically derived electric and thermal fields to accurately predict the increase in the tissue temperature and the time-varying size of ablation lesion in the tissue. Furthermore, the parameters such as the input current density, curvature, and convective heat transfer coefficient of blood have a significant effect on the thermal field and thus the ablation lesion size. This electrothermal analytical model with a large curvature may provide a theoretical foundation and guidance for the future RFA applications on large-curvature biological surfaces, thereby enhancing accuracy, reducing the need for re-ablation, and lowering the costs associated with the design and production of ablation catheters.

Advanced programmable metamaterials with heterogeneous microstructures have become increasingly prevalent in scientific and engineering disciplines attributed to their tunable ***,exploring the structure-property relationship in these materials,including forward prediction and inverse design,presents substantial *** inhomogeneous microstructures significantly complicate traditional analytical or simulation-based ***,we establish a novel framework that integrates the machine learning(ML)-encoded multiscale computational method for forward prediction and Bayesian optimization for inverse *** prior end-to-end ML methods limited to specific problems,our framework is both load-independent and *** means that a single training session for a constitutive model suffices to tackle various problems directly,eliminating the need for repeated data collection or *** demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of this framework using metamaterials with designable elliptical holes or lattice honeycombs *** accelerated forward prediction,we can precisely customize the stiffness and shape of metamaterials under diverse loading scenarios,and extend this capability to multi-objective customization ***,we achieve topology optimization for stress alleviation at the crack tip,resulting in a significant reduction of Mises stress by up to 41.2%and yielding a theoretical interpretable *** framework offers a general,efficient and precise tool for analyzing the structure-property relationships of novel metamaterials.

In this paper, the cutting process of a metal block is numerically simulated by the dynamic explicit FE code ABAQUS. Taking thermo-mechanical coupling effect into consideration, the simulation presents the variation of temperature, stress and strain distribution in the workpiece and chip. The effective plastic strain failure criterion is applied to modeling the chip separation and plastic formation. And the phenomenon of the contact and friction between the workpiece and the cutting tool are described in the paper.

Fracture behavior of sandstone with partial filling flaw under mixed-mode loading: Three-point bending tests and discrete element method

The fracture behavior of natural fracture in the geological reservoir subjected to filling property,affects the crack initiation and propagation under stress *** filling flaws were intermediate between open fractures and filled fractures,the fracture response may be worth *** this work,the effect of the filling property of sandstone with partial filling flaws on the fracture behavior was systematically investigated based on three-point bending tests and the numerical approach of discrete element method(DEM).In the laboratory,semi-circular three-point bending tests were carried out with partial filling flaws of various filling *** on this,numerical simulations were used to further investigate the effect of the filling ratio and the inclination of the partial filling flaw on the mechanical and fracture responses,and the effect of the partial filling flaw under mixed-mode loading on the fracture mechanism was elucidated coupled with acoustic emission(AE)*** obtained results showed that the increase in filling strength and filling ratio of partial filling flaw led to an increase in peak strength,with a decreasing trend in peak strength with the inclination of partial filling *** terms of crack propagation pattern,the increasing filling strength of the partial filling flaw induced the transformation of the fracture mechanism toward deflection,with a tortuosity path,while the filling ratio and inclination of partial filling flaw led to fracture mechanism change from deflection to penetration and attraction,accompanied with a larger AE event source in ***,the b-value based on the Gutenberg-Richter equation fluctuated between 5 and 4 at low filling ratio and inclination and remained around 5 at high filling ratio and inclination of partial filling *** results may provide an application prospective for reservoir stimulation using the natural fracture system.

Dynamic modeling of a three-dimensional braided composite thin plate considering braiding directions

Currently, there are a limited number of dynamic models available for braided composite plates with large overall motions, despite the incorporation of three-dimensional(3D) braided composites into rotating blade components. In this paper, a dynamic model of 3D 4-directional braided composite thin plates considering braiding directions is established. Based on Kirchhoff's plate assumptions, the displacement variables of the plate are expressed. By incorporating the braiding directions into the constitutive equation of the braided composites, the dynamic model of the plate considering braiding directions is obtained. The effects of the speeds, braiding directions, and braided angles on the responses of the plate with fixed-axis rotation and translational motion, respectively, are investigated. This paper presents a dynamic theory for calculating the deformation of 3D braided composite structures undergoing both translational and rotational motions. It also provides a simulation method for investigating the dynamic behavior of non-isotropic material plates in various applications.

Stress field of orthotropic cylinder subjected to axial compression

Based on the constancy hypothesis of material volume, the circumferential and radial stresses of a cylinder specimen are analyzed when the cylinder is subject to a loading along the axial direction. The circumferential and radial stress distribution is a power function of radius parameter when the constitutive relation of specimen material is orthotropic. The stress distribution is a quadratic function of radius parameter for transversely isotropic material. Along the cylinder axial line, the circumferential and radial stresses are maximum and equal to each other. In the circumference boundary surface, the radial stress is zero and the circumferential stress value is minimal. The failure theory of maximum tensile circumferential strain is applied to calculate the critical axial loading. The circumference-boundary-layer failure criterion of orthotropic cylinders is described with the Hill-Tsai strength theory. The obtained strength theory is related to axial stress and mechanical properties of specimen material and to the specimen axialdeformation strain rate and the change rate of strain rate.

Nonlinear flutter of a two-dimension thin plate subjected to aerodynamic heating by differential quadrature method

The problem of nonlinear aerothermoelasticity of a two-dimension thin plate in supersonic airflow is examined. The strain-displacement relation of the von Karman＇s large deflection theory is employed to describe the geometric non-linearity and the aerodynamic piston theory is employed to account for the effects of the aerodynamic force. A new method, the differential quadrature method （DQM）, is used to obtain the discrete form of the motion equations. Then the Runge-Kutta numerical method is applied to solve the nonlinear equations and the nonlinear response of the plate is obtained numerically. The results indicate that due to the aerodynamic heating, the plate stability is degenerated, and in a specific region of system parameters the chaos motion occurs, and the route to chaos motion is via doubling-period bifurcations.
