Bioleaching of trace elements and rare earth elements from coal fly ash

Coal fly ash originated from coal combustion has high concentrations of metals. If suitable leaching techniques are identified, then coal fly ash could serve as a useful source of valuable minerals including rare earth elements (REEs). In this study, three microbial strains, Candida bombicola, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Cryptococcus curvatus were tested on their performance of leaching trace elements and REEs from fly ash. Through comparing mineral loss and leaching efficiencies resulting from indirect leaching or use of the culture supernatant, C. bombicola was identified to be the best leading to the highest mineral loss and extracting efficiencies of trace elements and REEs among the three strains. The highest mineral loss observed from using the supernatant of this yeast strain was 59.7%. Among all trace elements, As and Mo had the highest leaching efficiency of 80.9% and 79.5%. respectively. The same leaching test led to 67.7% of Yb and 64.6% of Er dissolved from the ash. This study, thus, demonstrated that bioleaching is feasible for leaching metals out of fly ash. The C. bombicola strain deserves further investigation due to its robust actions on metal leaching.

Mythos and the Semiotic Reconstitution of Self, Culture, and World

I discuss the human need or drive for meaning （which I call ＂the Human Eros＂） and how this centers on various central or core meanings that become embodied so as to constitute definitive identities--identities of self, group, culture, and world. 1 call these ＂mythoi＂（and not ＂myths＂ insofar as their key feature is their importance and value--＂myth＂ carries with it the distracting association of ＂falsehood,＂ especially ＂unscientific falsehood;＂ science is loaded with its mythoi like everything else.） These mythoi must be embodied experientially and in cultural habits, actions, rituals, i.e., praxeis, in order to renew and reconstitute a sense of meaning and value in existence. That is, mythoi serve the Human Eros. These mythoi employ tropes or cultural types as structural principles. Tropes themselves tend to group in various relational patterns and tensions that I call ＂constellations.＂ Much of the ＂play of signs＂ in cultural creation lies in exploring, clarifying, and even antagonizing these relations as ways of deepening the world of meaning. ＂Play＂ explores possibilities, beginning with given actualities. It may explore relations that remain distant from the core of a culture＇s or individual＇s self-understanding. But it may approach and, at times, directly engage core meanings and values, possibly transforming them.

Strong evidence for latitudinal diversity gradient in mosses across the world

Species richness generally decreases with increasing latitude,a biodiversity gradient that has long been considered as one of the few laws in *** latitudinal diversity gradient has been observed in many major groups of *** plants,the latitudinal diversity gradient has been observed in vascular plants,angiosperms,ferns,and ***,a conspicuous latitudinal diversity gradient in mosses at a global or continental scale has not been observed until ***,we analyze a comprehensive data set including moss species in each band of 20° in latitude *** results show that moss species richness decreases strongly with increasing latitude,regardless of whether the globe is considered as a whole or different longitudinal segments(e.g.,Old World versus New World) are considered *** result holds when variation in area size among latitudinal bands is taken into ***'s correlation coefficient between latitude and species richness is-0.99 for both the Northern and southern *** bryophytes are an extant lineage of early land plants and because mosses not only include most of extant species of bryophytes but also are important constituents of most terrestrial ecosystems,understanding geographic patterns of mosses is particularly important The finding of our study fills a critical knowledge gap.

The Play of Signs in a New Mexico Landscape： Michael Mauldin＇s A＇ts＇ina： Place of Writings on the Rock

New Mexico composer Michael Mauldin＇s string quartet, A ＂ts ＇ina.＂ Place of Writings on the Rock, was inspired by the ruins of an ancient Zufii city at E1 Morro National Monument （USA） and by the surrounding landscape. Like many of Mauldin＇s works, the quartet aims to communicate ＂an environmental essence, rather than.., a literal soundscape.＂＂Art is a metaphor for life,＂ the composer maintains. ＂Though art includes descriptive gestures from our shared physical experience... I feel [it] should distill and interpret that experience rather than just describe it... or randomly recreate it.＂ Mauldin＇s approach to composition points toward a semiotically-nuanced way of thinking about musical meaning that is rooted in our common experience as embodied human organisms. This essay examines the iconic and indexical roles of musical gesture and voicing to convey embodied experience in the context of landscape throughout A ＇ts ＇ina. I draw upon Mark Johnson＇s theory of the bodily grounding of metaphor to show how this work exhibits and enacts a ＂play of musical signs＂ that celebrates, in the words of New Mexico author Peggy Pond Church, one of those ＂certain places in the earth where the great powers that move between earth and sky are closer and more available than others.＂

A comprehensive understanding of spatial distribution and clustering patterns of gravels is of great significance for ecological restoration and ***,traditional methods for studying gravels are low-efficiency and have many *** study researched the spatial distribution and cluster characteristics of gravels based on digital image processing technology combined with a self-organizing map(SOM)and multivariate statistical methods in the grassland of northern Tibetan ***,the correlation of morphological parameters of gravels between different cluster groups and the environmental factors affecting gravel distribution were *** results showed that the morphological characteristics of gravels in northern region(cluster C)and southern region(cluster B)of the Tibetan Plateau were similar,with a low gravel coverage,small gravel diameter,and elongated *** regions were mainly distributed in high mountainous areas with large topographic *** central region(cluster A)has high coverage of gravels with a larger diameter,mainly distributed in high-altitude plains with smaller *** component analysis(PCA)results showed that the gravel distribution of cluster A may be mainly affected by vegetation,while those in clusters B and C could be mainly affected by topography,climate,and *** study confirmed that the combination of digital image processing technology and SOM could effectively analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of gravels,providing a new mode for gravel research.

Facile synthesis of hierarchical flower-like Ag/Cu2O and Au/Cu2O nanostructures and enhanced catalytic performance in electrochemical reduction of CO2

Novel,hierarchical,flower-like Ag/Cu2O and Au/Cu2O nanostructures were successfully fabricated and applied as efficient electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of ***2O nanospheres with a uniform size of^180 nm were initially ***,Cu2O was used as a sacrificial template to prepare a series of Ag/Cu2O composites through galvanic *** varying the Ag/Cu atomic ratio,Ago.12/Cu2O,having a hierarchical,flower-like nanostructure with intersecting Ag nanoflakes encompassing an inner Cu2O sphere,was *** as-prepared Ag/Cu2O samples presented higher Faradaic efficiencies(FE)for CO and relatively suppressed H2 evolution than the parent Cu2O nanospheres due to the combination of Ag with Cu2O in the ***,the highest CO evolution rate was achieved with Ago.12/Cu2O due to the larger electroactive surface area furnished by the hierarchical *** same hier-archical flower-like structure was also obtained for the Auo./Cu2O composite,where the FEco(10%)was even higher than that of Ago.12/***,the results reveal that Ago.12/Cu2O and Auo./Cu2O both exhibit remarkably improved stability relative to *** study presents a facile method of developing hierarchical metal-oxide composites as fficient and stable electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2.

Partial Protection by Lipoic Acid Against Carboplantin-induced Ototoxicity in Rats

Objective To investigate the alterations in auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABRs) and the changes of carboplatin-induced ototoxicity in the cochlear oxidant/antioxidant systems and otoprotection by an antioxidant lipoate. Methods Male wistar rats were divided into four groups and treated as follows: 1) vehicle (saline) control, 2) carboplatin (256 mg/kg, i.p.), 3) lipoate (100 mg/kg, i.p.), 4) lipoate + carboplatin. Post-treatment ABRs were performed after four days and rats were sacrificed with their cochleae harvested and analyzed. Results Carboplatin significantly elevated ABR threshold above the pretreatment thresholds. Lipoate+carboplatin treated rats showed decreased elevation of hearing threshold. Carboplatin significantly depleted cochlear reduced to oxizized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio, whereas lipoate+carboplatin treatment increased GSH/GSSG ratio. Carboplatin significantly decreased cochlear copper zinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities and enzyme protein expressions and a significant increase in Mn-SOD activity, protein expression and malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Cochlear antioxidant enzyme activities, enzyme protein expressions and MDA level were partially restored in lipoate+carboplatin treated rats, compared to carboplatin alone. Conclusion Carboplatin-induced ototoxicity is related to impairment of cochlear antioxidant system and otoprotection conferred by lipoate is associated with partial sparing of the cochlear antioxidant defense system.

Preana: Game Theory Based Prediction with Reinforcement Learning

In this article, we have developed a game theory based prediction tool, named Preana, based on a promising model developed by Professor Bruce Beuno de Mesquita. The first part of this work is dedicated to exploration of the specifics of Mesquita’s algorithm and reproduction of the factors and features that have not been revealed in literature. In addition, we have developed a learning mechanism to model the players’ reasoning ability when it comes to taking risks. Preana can predict the outcome of any issue with multiple steak-holders who have conflicting interests in economic, business, and political sciences. We have utilized game theory, expected utility theory, Median voter theory, probability distribution and reinforcement learning. We were able to reproduce Mesquita’s reported results and have included two case studies from his publications and compared his results to that of Preana. We have also applied Preana on Irans 2013 presidential election to verify the accuracy of the prediction made by Preana.
