Controls of seed quantity and quality on seedling recruitment of smith fir along altitudinal gradient in southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Alpine treeline ecotones are harsh environment for tree establishment due to low temperature. Tree establishment at treelines requires favorable climate, suitable microsites, and viable seeds. But most researches have been addressed treeline microclimate and its effects on tree regeneration, the knowledge of seed quantity and quality and its controls on seedling recruitment were limited. We measured seed rain, soil seed bank, seed germination rate and seedling recruitment in natural forests in combination with seed transplanting manipulation to evaluate the controls of seed quantity and quality on seedling recruitment of Abies georgei var. smithii （smith fir） along altitudinal gradient, with focus on treeline ecotone in the Sygera Mountains, southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Both seed quantity and seed quality of smith fir decreased with increasing altitude and was thereby associated with decline in seed germination rate. Seed quantity and seedling recruitment were better in north-facing slope than in south slope. The treeline ecotone above 42oo m appeared as the threshold altitude to sharply decrease seed quality and seedling recruitment. The emergence and overwintering rates of transplanting seeds from 3600-38oo m also went down remarkably above 4200 m at north-facing slope. It also underpins the fact that treeline ecotone is the bottleneck of seedling recruitment. Our results suggest that seed quantity and quality are the principal limitation of treeline upward advance. This study also provides evidence to support stable treeline position in southeastern Tibetan Plateau.

Granite at Penggongmiao is a large batholith in the Nanling Range, with an outcrop area of over 900 km 2 . There are many scheelite-quartz veins around the granite. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating was carried out for zircons from the granite. The middlecoarse-grained biotite granite has U-Pb ages of 435 to 436 Ma. Ages of 426.5±2.5 Ma were obtained for aplitic dyke cross-cutting the granite. The scheelite of magmatic origin in the aplite dyke was identified from petrographic investigation. This demonstrates that W-bearing granites of Early Paleozoic (corresponding to the Caledonian orogensis in the traditional sense) occur in the Nanling Range. This finding has important implications for the ore-forming potential of Paleozoic granites and on the extent of Mesozoic mineralization. Thus it merits performing an intensive study of Paleozoic granites in south China. The occurrences of aplite or microgranite may be an indicative of the Caledonian tungsten granites and associated W mineralization.

Changes of Lipid Profile and C-Reactive Protein after Withdrawal of Xuezhikang,an Extract of Cholestin,in Patients With Stable Angina Pectoris

Objectives In addition to its lipid-lowering properties, statin decreases the level of C-reactive protein （CRP） resulting in reduction of cardiovascular events. However, information about discontinuation of statin therapy in stable cardiac patients is limited. This was a prospective cohort study to explore whether withdrawal of statin treatment could result in rebound of inflammation in patients with stable angina pectofis in a short-term course. Methods and Results 75 patients with stable angina pectoris were randomly divided into three groups： ① Pretreatment with Xuezhikang （XZK, an extract of cholestin） for 6 weeks and then replaced by placebo; ②Treatment with XZK throughout the study; ③ Placebo. Lipid levels, highly sensitive CRP （hs-CRP） and serum cardiac troponin T （cTnT） were assessed before receiving the XZK therapy, 1 day before discontinuation of XZK, and on day 1, 2, 3, 7 and 14 after discontinuation of XZK, respectively. At day 14 after discontinuation of XZK therapy, total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglyceride significantly increased, whereas HDL-C level significantly decreased. The median level of hs-CRP increased significantly from the second day after withdrawal of XZK therapy. There was a prominent rebound of hs-CRP concentration 3 days after discontinuation of XZK therapy. 7 to 14 days after discontinuation of XZK therapy, the hs-CRP concentration declined to a similar level as in the placebo group. Elevated eTnT level did not occur throughout the study course in either guroup Conclusios Short-term discontinuation of statin therapy could induce a rapid rebound phenomenon of inflammatory response independently of changes of lipid parameters. However, it was not enough to induce myocardial injury in this cohort of patients with stable angina peetoris.

In this study,one immortalized human normal prostatic epithelial cell line（BPH） and four human prostate cancer cell lines（LNCa P,22Rv1,PC-3,and DU-145） were treated with Ganoderma Lucidum triterpenoids（GLT） at different doses and for different time periods. Cell viability,apoptosis,and cell cycle were analyzed using flow cytometry and chemical assays. Gene expression and binding to DNA were assessed using real-time PCR and Western blotting. It was found that GLT dose-dependently inhibited prostate cancer cell growth through induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at G1 phase. GLT-induced apoptosis was due to activation of Caspases-9 and-3 and turning on the downstream apoptotic events. GLT-induced cell cycle arrest（mainly G1 arrest） was due to up-regulation of p21 expression at the early time and down-regulation of cyclin-dependent kinase 4（CDK4） and E2F1 expression at the late time. These findings demonstrate that GLT suppresses prostate cancer cell growth by inducing growth arrest and apoptosis,which might suggest that GLT or Ganoderma Lucidum could be used as a potential therapeutic drug for prostate cancer.

At present,China is facing rapid economic and social development as well as the shortage of land for construction. In fact,various countries and regions are faced with similar problems in the process of urbanization and industrialization,and the land readjustment is often adopted for construction land consolidation to promote economical and intensive land use and solve the supply and demand conflict of construction land. Based on the land readjustment experience of Germany,Japan,China Taiwan and south Korea,we perform a comparative analysis on the implementation background,concept,purpose,procedures and core principles,and borrow ideas from their experience,in order to provide a reference for China to adopt suitable land readjustment tools during construction land consolidation.
