Oceanic plateaus are a significant type of large igneous provinces in the oceans,providing insights to regional tectonic events and mantle *** three world's largest oceanic plateaus,the Ontong Java Plateau,the Kerguelen Plateau and the Shatsky Rise,are representatives in displaying extraordinary fluxes of magma from mantle to *** description incorporating transdisciplinary observations on marine geology,geophysics and geochemistry allow us to test the two lively-debated oceanic plateau formation hypotheses(mantle plume and plate boundary models).Predictions from either hypothesis merely obtain partial *** is therefore unclear to differentiate one model from another one regarding the oceanic plateau *** comparisons of the three oceanic plateaus show many commonalities and even more differences in their formation and *** diversity signifies one may not be typical of ***,several key common features,i.e.,massive and rapid eruption and near-ridge formation setting,imply that the lithospheric volcanic emplacement of oceanic plateaus was controlled by seafloor spreading despite a mantle plume exists *** a coincidence of mantle plume and spreading ridge occurs,it may indicate a plume-ridge *** possible mechanism is that spreading ridge is dragged by a plume and migrates to the location of the *** possibility is that the asthenosphere is fed by a plume nearby and generates melting anomalies along the spreading ridge.

Secchi depth(SD,m)is a direct and intuitive measure of water's transparency,which is also an indicator of water *** 2015,a semi-analytical model was developed to derive SD from remote sensing reflectance,thus able to provide maps of water's transparency in satellite *** an in-situ dataset(338 stations)is used to evaluate its potential ability to monitor water quality in the coastal and estuarine waters,with measurements covering the Zhujiang(Pearl)River Estuary,the Yellow sea and the East china sea where measured SD values span a range of 0.2–21.0 *** a preliminary validation result,according to the whole dataset,the unbiased percent difference(UPD)between estimated and measured SD is 23.3%(N=338,R^2=0.89),with about 60%of stations in the dataset having relative difference(RD)≤20%,over 80%of stations having RD≤40%.Furthermore,by excluding the field data which with relatively larger uncertainties,the semi-analytical model yielded the UPD of 17.7%(N=132,R^2=0.92)with SD range of 0.2–11.0 *** addition,the semi-analytical model was applied to Landsat-8 images in the Zhujiang River Estuary,and retrieved high-quality mapping and reliable spatial-temporal patterns of water *** into account the uncertainties associated with both field measurements and satellite data processing,and that there were no tuning of the semi-analytical model for these regions,these findings indicate highly robust retrieval of SD from spectral techniques for such turbid coastal and estuarine *** results suggest it is now possible to routinely monitor coastal water transparency or visibility at high-spatial resolutions from measurements,like Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 and newly launched Gaofen-5.

By using flow cytometry techniques, we investigated the abundance and composition of the heterotrophic prokaryotes, virioplankton and picophytoplankton community in the Pearl River Estuary and Daya Bay in the summer of 2012. We identified two subgroups of prokaryotes, high nucleic acid（HNA） and low nucleic acid（LNA）, characterized by different nucleic acid contents. HNA abundance was significantly correlated with larger phytoplankton and Synechococcus（Syn） abundance, which suggested the important role of organic substrates released from primary producers on bacterial growth. Although LNA did not show any association with environmental variables, it was a vital component of the microbial community. In contrast to previous studies, the total virioplankton concentration had a poor relationship with nutrient availability. The positive relationship between large-sized phytoplankton abundance and the V-I population confirmed that V-I was a phytoplankton-infecting viral subgroup. Although the V-II group（bacteriophages）was dominant in the virioplankton community, it was not related with prokaryotic abundance, which indicated factors other than hosts controlling V-II abundance or the uncertainty of virus-host coupling. With respect to the picophytoplankton community,our results implied that river input exerted a strong limitation to Syn distribution in the estuary, while picoeukaryotes（Euk） were numerically less abundant and showed a quite different distribution pattern from that of Syn, and hence presented ecological properties distinct from Syn in our two studied areas.

A quasi-global high-resolution HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is used to investigate seasonal variations of water transports through the four main straits in the south china sea. The results show that the annual transports through the four straits Luzon Strait, Taiwan Strait, Sunda Shelf and Mindoro Strait are -4.5, 2.3, 0.5 and 1.7 Sv (1 Sv=106 m3s-1), respectively. The Mindoro Strait has an important outflow that accounts for over one third of the total inflow through the Luzon Strait. Furthermore, it indicates that there are strong seasonal variations of water transport in the four straits. The water transport through the Luzon Strait (Taiwan Strait, Sunda Shelf, Mindoro Strait) has a maximum value of -7.6 Sv in December (3.1 Sv in July, 2.1S v in January, 4.5Sv in November), a minimum value of -2.1 Sv in June (1.5 Sv in October, -1.0 Sv in June, -0.2 Sv in May), respectively.

Oceanic plateaus are large igneous provinces in the oceans,created by massive underwater eruptions,but their late-stage volcanism is poorly *** the addition of recent high-quality bathymetric data to existing data,286 secondary cones were discovered over Shatsky Rise oceanic *** cones with steeper flank slopes(mean 6.1°±4.4°)and smaller sizes(102–1923 m in height)are morphologically distinct from the plateau,and they are thought to have formed after the main volcanic *** height and characteristic height(420 m)are close to seamounts in the Pacific Ocean,whereas greater than those in the Atlantic *** flatness of Shatsky Rise’s cones(0.25±0.20)are similar to that of seamounts in both Pacific and Atlantic Oceans,but notably density in cone distribution(0.56 km^-3)and their mean slope are significantly lower than those of seamounts in the two *** slopes of secondary cones within Shatsky Rise may be explained by higher effusion rates of remaining *** cone formation was expected to have a link to rifting by seafloor spreading,weak relationship between cone orientation and magnetic anomaly pattern implies that the expectation is ***,weak correlation between the cone height and depth indicates it is not true that volcanic cones grow taller when they occur closer to the massif summits with thicker oceanic crust,which was suggested as the increase in hydraulic *** height and flatness are also not strongly related,implying that remaining magma supply was too limited to foster the cones to critical height.

Moho structure provides important clues for understanding crustal structure,isostatic state and magmatic flux from mantle to ***-basin Moho structure of the south china sea(SCS)is important for understanding crustal evolution mechanisms of both continental break-up and seafloor spreading *** Sub-basin(SWSB)opened up the latest and has the closest continental margins,making it the best to study the across-basin *** seismic(MCS)reflection data of line NH973-1 that crosses SWSB in NW-SE direction were reprocessed in order to image Moho *** MCS data,Moho reflectors are observed in places,which were not revealed in prior *** Moho generally shows symmetric structure on both sides of the central rift valley(CRV)and with variations in crustal *** CRV,the Moho is 2 seconds depth in two-way travel time(TWTT)beneath the igneous basement,which corresponds to 7 km depth,indicating normal oceanic crustal accretion during the ending of seafloor *** to the continent-ocean boundary(COB),the Moho becomes shallow to 1 second depth in TWTT(3.5 km),implying strong crustal thinning towards the continent,probably because of poor magma supply at the beginning of seafloor *** south COB,the Moho depth under the crust almost reaches zero,which could be explained as a result of exhumed *** addition,two low-angle,deep-penetrating normal faults are observed at south *** faults cut across the Moho into the upper mantle,which may be attributed to lithospheric hyper-stretching at COB during continental break-up.

Trace metal(Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) exposures, distribution and bioaccumulation were investigated in marine organisms from Guangdong coastal regions, south china. The results showed that all of the selected metals were observed in marine organisms with a predomination of Cu and Zn. The metal exposure levels exhibited obvious variations between species with the decreasing order of crab > shellfish > shrimp > fish. The higher metals enrichment seen in shellfish and crab species primarily attributed to their living habits and the higher sediment background values of trace metals. Endpoint bioaccumulation factor(BAFfd) was used to characterize the bioaccumulation potentials of marine organisms to trace metals, of which Cu and Zn were the most accumulated elements. The exposure of trace metals in the cultured organisms was far lower than those in wild marine organisms, which is probably due to the effect of growth dilution. Comparisons with previous studies demonstrated that the concentration profiles of most trace metals declined over the last one to two decades, except Cu, that increased indistinctively.

The northwestern sub-basin of south china sea(SCS)is a unique tectonic unit formed in the early spreading of the *** northwestern Sub-basin has a series of complex geological structures such as seamounts and fault zones surrounded by the Xisha Trough,the Zhongsha Massif,and the Pearl River *** extensional structures and magmatic activity in the northwestern sub-basin are closely related to the lithospheric structure and its ***,details of the deep lithosphere structure are still poorly ***,we obtained detailed data of water and Moho depth using sonar buoys,Extended Spread Profiles(ESP),Ocean Bottom Seismometer(OBS),both Multi-beam and land-sea joint seismic surveys in the northwestern sub-basin and its surrounding *** we adopted a thermal isostasy method to calculate the depth of the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary(LAB)in the northwestern sub-basin of the SCS and its surrounding *** show that the range of LAB depth is~25–110 *** shallowest burial depth is 25–60 km occurring in the ocean *** depth increases to 60–110 km toward the continental *** lithospheric structure on the north and south sides of the Xisha Trough is symmetrical and shows the deep structure and thermal features of aborted *** LAB depth in the Zhongsha Trough and the Zhongsha Massif increased from 60 to 70 km southwestwards,consistent with the trend of surface *** LAB depth to the west side of the Pearl River Valley is 60–80 km,and the thinning of the lithosphere is related to the distribution of faults,depressions and the magmatic *** LAB depth in the northwestern sub-basin and the eastern subbasin is less than 60 km with the thinnest part being less than 46 *** ocean drilling,seismic investigation,and seafloor topography,we show that the ocean basin of the northwestern sub-basin of the SCS locates within the 46 km isobath of the *** formation of the rifted valleys and discrete blocks s
