New insight into the origin and evolution of the flora and fauna of Hainan Island, china

The origin of the biota of Hainan Island, china, remains a fundamental scientific problem. Comparative studies on the biota, geological tectonics, and paleomagnetism proposed that during the Eocene, Hainan Island connected Vietnam and Guangxi, and then moved to the southeast to reach its present location. This review mainly discusses its biota origin from molecular phylogeny and palaeobotanical research. The formation and evolution of the biological groups of Hainan Island were identified via research on their genomes, phylogeny, and molecular biogeography. This research showed that the genera and species that appeared and diverged early in their evolution(i.e., before the Miocene) can be explained by the land connection between Hainan Island, Vietnam, and Guangxi during the Eocene-Oligocene. According to southeast Asian tectonic theory, in the Middle Miocene(at about 15 million years ago), Hainan Island had moved to its present position. The population and genetic divergence of species with late divergence times(after 15 Ma) can be reasonably explained by the close proximity(or land connection) between Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula, enabling genetic communication between Hainan Island and the chinese mainland, but have exceptional cases. Conclusions have been obtained through palaeobotanical studies, showing that in the Eocene-Oligocene period, southwest china and Hainan Island had subtropical vegetation and flora. However, the fossil group in southeast china(in Maoming, near present-day Hainan Island) in the Late Eocene indicated a tropical rainforest vegetation and flora. This suggests that in the Paleogene, Hainan Island may have been located near or on the southwest border of Guangxi and northern Vietnam, rather than in its present location. Propagating subduction initiation of the Caroline Plate at the Mussau Trench

New seismic imaging from the Mussau Trench confirms that, under horizontal compression on an oceanic plate boundary, it is within the young and weak oceanic plate that a trench will develop, and it is the young plate, not so long after its birth, that starts to subduct toward the old plate. The Mesozoic Pacific Plate cannot easily bend, under the joint horizontal compression and vertical gravity pull, even with a pre-existing weak zone in place and with a large age offset across the plate boundary. The bending of the Caroline Plate near the northern end of the Mussau Trench started only after a long-time span of trench migration, and/or after a prolonged transition from initial compression to trench development. Highly contrasting trench deformation and sedimentary accretion between two parallel seismic sections support an evident migration of underthrusting or significant longitudinal heterogeneity along the trench. The swift transition from underthrusting to non-thrusting can be explained by a counter-clockwise rotation of the Caroline Plate. That miniature accretionary wedges develop even before the subduction initiates imply strong compression and uplifting before the underthrusting can kick-start. Rotation of the Caroline Plate have been halted as the Mussau Trench is seismically rather quiet and the Lyra Trough to the east shows relaxational extension.

Relationship Between Developmental Intensity of Landslide and Malan Loess Cohesion at a Regional Horizontal Space Scale

Malan loess is highly water-sensitive， with its shear strength， particularly cohesive strength， significantly decreasing under the influence of water. The Western Shanxi Loess Plateau （WSLP） is especially prone to loess landslides， which are closely linked to rainfall infiltration. Understanding the regional variation of Malan loess cohesion (cm) and its distribution in relation to the developmental intensity of landslides in this area can provide essential scientific evidence for effective landslide prevention. Loess landslides and Malan loess were selected as the objects of study for the current research. The regional variation and distribution pattern of the cmwere revealed through undisturbed loess direct shear tests and Inverse Distance Weighting （IDW） interpolation. The relationship between the developmental intensity of landslide and the regional variation of the cmwas explored using the Cumulative Sum Variable Dimension Fractal （CSVDF）， Frequency Ratio （FR） model， and Certainty Factor （CF） model. The following conclusions were drawn: Results from the direct shear tests and IDW method indicate that the cmtends to decrease from south to north and exhibits a positively skewed spatial distribution pattern. The CSVDF results indicates a similarity between the regional variation of the cmand the development intensity of loess landslides. The FR and CF results reveal that loess landslides are more likely to occur when the cmis between 0 and 16.14 kPa.

Late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic volcanic-sedimentary history of the southeastern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Timing of uplift of the Inner Mongolia paleo-uplift

The Kulun region is located in the eastern Bainaimiao arc belt on the southeastern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB), adjacent to the North china Craton(NCC) to the south. This region records the closure of the PaleoAsian Ocean during the Paleozoic to early Mesozoic and is key to study the tectonic evolution of the northern margin of the *** conducted zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotope analysis of volcanic-sedimentary and intrusive rocks in the Kulun region. The volcanic-sedimentary rocks were previously assigned an early Carboniferous age, but include volcanic rocks with ages of 267–266 Ma and sedimentary rocks with youngest detrital zircon age peaks of 265–244 Ma, which were intruded by a granite with an age of 242 Ma. This indicates that these rocks are actually middle Permian to Middle Triassic in age(267–242Ma) and correspond to the Qingfengshan and Liujiagou formations. Moreover, two volcanic rock samples have high εHf(t) values(+1.6 to +16.1) and relatively young two-stage Hf model ages(1095–327 Ma), indicating their sources associated with the CAOB. The age spectra and Hf isotopic characteristics of detrital zircons from the sedimentary rocks suggest that, during the middle Permian to Middle Triassic, the sedimentary provenance in the Kulun region was mainly the CAOB. However, by the Early Jurassic, the provenance changed to the NCC(i.e., the Inner Mongolia Paleo-uplift, IMPU). This result, combined with the development of a series of conglomerates on the northern margin of the NCC in the Late Triassic(i.e., Xingshikou, Xiaoyingzi,and Xiaohekou formations), indicates the Kulun region experienced an abrupt change in paleogeography during the Late Triassic, with the IMPU undergoing significant uplift and thus becoming the main sediment source in the Kulun region. We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient,EP240408a,by Einstein Probe （EP） and follow-up studies made with EP,Swift,NICER,GROND,ATCA and other ground-based multiwavelength *** new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope （WXT） on board EP on April 8th,2024,manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for *** flare reached a peak flux of 3.9×10-9erg cm-2s-1in 0.5-4 ke V,～300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the *** and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT,Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new *** X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 ke V,with a power-law photon index varying *** X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for ～4 d,followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable ～10 d after the initial *** on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations,an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 d is found for EP240408a,which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term *** counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared,with the earliest observation at 17 h after the initial X-ray detection,suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these *** demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far,by comparison with,in particular,jetted tidal disruption events,gamma-ray bursts,X-ray binaries and fast blue optical *** nature of EP240408a thus remains an *** suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of～10 *** detection and follow-ups of more of such objects are essential for revealing their origin.

Evapotranspiration and its components partitioning based on an improved hydrological model: historical attributions and future projections

Estimation and attribution of evapotranspiration （ET） and its components under changing environment is still a challenge but is essential for understanding the mechanisms of water and energy transfer subsequently regional water resources management. In this study， an improved hydrological model is developed to estimate evapotranspiration and its components i.e.， evaporation （E） and transpiration （T） by integrated the advantages of hydrological modeling constrained by water balance and the water-carbon close relationships. Results show that the improved hydrological model could captures ET and its components well in the study region. During the past years， annual ET and E increase obviously about 2.40mm/a and 1.42mm/a， particularly in spring and summer accounting for 90%. T shows less increasement and mainly increases in spring while it decreases in summer. Precipitation is the dominant factor and contributes 74.1% and 90.0% increases of annual ET and E， while the attribution of T changes is more complex by coupling of the positive effects of precipitation， rising temperature and interactive influences， the negative effects of solar diming and elevated CO2. In the future， ET and its components tend to increase under most of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways （SSP） scenarios except for T decreases under the very high emissions scenario （SSP5-8.5） based on the projections. From seasonal perspective， the changes of ET and the components are mainly in spring and summer accounting for 75%， while more slightly changes are found in autumn and winter. This study highlights the effectiveness of estimating ET and its components by improving hydrological model within water-carbon coupling relationships， and more complex mechanisms of transpiration changes than evapotranspiration and evaporation changes under the interactive effects of climate variability and vegetation dynamics. Heavy Metal Contamination in Soil and Soybean near the Dabaoshan Mine, south china

Concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown near the Dabaoshan Mine were investigated, and their potential risk to the health of inhabitants was estimated. In the Fandong (FD) and Zhongxin (ZX) villages, which are near the Dabaoshan mineral deposit, concentrations of Pb (0.34 mg kg^(-1) for FD), Cd (0.23 mg kg^(-1) for ZX) and Cr (1.14 and 1.75 mg kg^(-1) for FD and ZX, respectively) in the seeds of soybean exceeded the tolerance limit set by chinese standards. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) from consumption of soybean seeds for FD inhabitants were 0.570, 0.170, 38.550, 142.400, 1.910 and 14.530 μg d^(-1) kg^(-1) boby weight for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni, respectively. Our results indicate that soybeans grown in the vicinity of the Dabaoshan Mine accumulate some metals, and the seeds pose a potential health risk to the local inhabitants.

Effect of fertilizer and water content on N_2O emission from three plantation soils in south china

The effects of fertilizers and water content on N2O emission were studied using the three most typical plantation soils. Soil incubations were performed and fertilization and water content treatments were designed. At 25% of saturated water content（SWC）, N2O emissions from the soil treated with urea, KNO3, （NH4）2 SO, and KH2 PO, were compared at application rates of 0, 100, 200, 300 and 500 kg/hm2. At 80% of SWC, similar experiments were carried out but at only one application rate（500 kg/hm^2）. N2O emissions at various water contents（20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, 80% and 100% of SWC） were studied. At low water content（25% of SWC）, neither nitrogen nor phosphorus（or potassium） fertilizers led to a high level of N2O emission, which generally ranged from 2.03 to 29.02 μg/（m^2·h）. However, at high water content（80% SWC）, the fertilizers resulted in much greater N2O emission irregardless of soil tested. The highest N2O emission rates after 24 h of water addition were 1233 lag/（ m^2 ·h） for S. superba soil, 1507 lag/（m^2 · h） for P. elliottii soil and 1869 lag/ （m^2 h） for A. mangium soil respectively. N2O emission from soils treated with urea, （NH4）2SO, and KH2PO, immediately dropped to a low level but steadily increased to a very high level for the soil treated with KNO3. High NO3^- content was a basis of high level of N2O emission. N2O emission rates from soils peaked shortly after flooding, rapidly dropping to a very low level in soil from non-legume plantations, but lasting for a relatively long period in soil from legume plantations. When soil water content increased equaling to or higher than 65%, the accumulated N2O emission over a period of 13 d ranged from 20.21-29.78 mg/m^2 for S. superba, 30.57-70.12 mg/m^2 for P. elliottii and 300.89-430.51 mg/m^2 for A. mangium. The critical water content was 50% of SWC, above which a high level of N2O emission could be expected, and below which very little N2O emissions were detected.
