What Do Emotions Do？ A Pragmatist Approach to the Role of Emotions in Media Events

Expressions of emotion in the media, especially in the context of news, are often criticized as promoting irrational attitudes. For supporters of this kind of criticism, rather than addressing such emotional sensitivity, journalism should be objective, appealing to the rationality of the public. Anger, indignation, enthusiasm, and expressions of joy or sadness should not have part in public debates. From this perspective, rationality and emotions are opposed, the former being fundamental for the constitution of the public sphere, while the latter falls into the category of inner impulses. While Kant denied any sort of rationality to emotions, Gustave Lebon attributed emotional attitudes to crowds rather than to a public. In a crowd, emotions spread like an epidemic through a kind of contagion. The present study is based on a contrasting perspective and focuses on the rationality of emotions＇, whether in philosophy （Nussbaum）, sociology （Paperman, Aranguren 2014; Livet 2002）, or psychology （Krant-Gruber）. Oddly enough, these different approaches do not seem to have affected media studies where, belief in the irrationality of emotions, still dominates analyses of media coverage of natural or industrial catastrophes, wars, or terrorist attacks. Instead of considering the nature of emotions, or the question of whether they actually corrupt the objectivity of journalism and the supposed rationality of public debates, I will seek to develop a pragmatist approach to the question of what, emotions actually do. In fact, the idea of emotions spreading contagiously had been disputed since the 18th century when Adam Smith asked how a British newspaper reader could be affected by an earthquake happening in China. The authors establish several estimates showing that the distance in W^(1,p),1 < p < ∞,between two immersions from a domain of R^n into R^(n+1) is bounded by the distance in L^p between two matrix fields defined in terms of the first two fundamental forms associated with each immersion. These estimates generalize previous estimates obtained by the authors and P. G. Ciarlet and weaken the assumptions on the fundamental forms at the expense of replacing them by two different matrix fields.

Dirac Concentrations in a Chemostat Model of Adaptive Evolution(In honor of the immense scientific influence of Ham Brezis)

This paper deals with a non-local parabolic equation of Lotka-Volterra type that describes the evolution of phenotypically structured populations. Nonlinearities appear in these systems to model interactions and competition phenomena leading to selection. In this paper, the equation on the structured population is coupled with a differential equation on the nutrient concentration that changes as the total population *** methods aimed at showing the convergence of the solutions to a moving Dirac mass are reviewed. Using either weak or strong regularity assumptions, the authors study the concentration of the solution. To this end, BV estimates in time on appropriate quantities are stated, and a constrained Hamilton-Jacobi equation to identify where the solutions concentrates as Dirac masses is derived.

One of the most intriguing questions in eusocial insects is to understand how the overt reproductive conflict in the colony appears limited when queens or kings are senescent or lost because the morphologically similar individuals in the colony are reproductively *** there are some individuals who preferentially differentiate into replacement reproductives or not has received little *** consistent individual behavioral differences(also termed“animal personality”)of individuals from the colony can shape cunningly their task and consequently affect the colony fitness but have been rarely investigated in eusocial ***,we used the termite Reticulitermes labralis to investigate if variations in individual personalities(elusiveness and aggressiveness)may predict which individuals will perform reproductive differentiation within *** observed that when we separately reared elusive and aggressive workers,elusive workers differentiate into reproductives significantly earlier than aggressive *** we reared them together in the proportions 12:3,10:5,and 8:7(aggressive workers:elusive workers),the first reproductives mostly differentiated from the elusive workers,and the reproductives differentiated from the elusive workers significantly earlier than from aggressive ***,we found that the number of workers participating in reproductive differentiation was significantly lower in the groups of both types of workers than in groups containing only elusive *** results demonstrate that the elusiveness trait was a strong predictor of workers’differentiation into replacement reproductives in ***,our results suggest that individual personalities within the insect society could play a key role in resolving the overt reproductive conflict.

Macroscale fluorescence imaging is increasingly used to observe biological ***,it may suffer from spectral interferences that originate from ambient light or autofluorescence of the sample or its *** this manuscript,we built a simple and inexpensive fluorescence macroscope,which has been used to evaluate the performance of Speed OPIOM(Out of Phase Imaging after Optical Modulation),which is a reference-free dynamic contrast protocol,to selectively image reversibly photoswitchable fluorophores as labels against detrimental autofluorescence and ambient *** tuning the intensity and radial frequency of the modulated illumination to the Speed OPIOM resonance and adopting a phase-sensitive detection scheme that ensures noise rejection,we enhanced the sensitivity and the signal-to-noise ratio for fluorescence detection in blot assays by factors of 50 and 10,respectively,over direct fluorescence observation under constant ***,we overcame the strong autofluorescence of growth media that are currently used in microbiology and realized multiplexed fluorescence observation of colonies of spectrally similar fluorescent bacteria with a unique configuration of excitation and emission ***,we easily discriminated fluorescent labels from the autofluorescent and reflective background in labeled leaves,even under the interference of incident light at intensities that are comparable to *** proposed approach is expected to find multiple applications,from biological assays to outdoor observations,in fluorescence macroimaging.
