Efficient video delivery involves the transcoding of the original sequence into various resolutions,bitrates and standards,in order to match viewers’capabilities.Since video coding and transcoding are computationally demanding,performing a portion of these tasks at the network edges promises to decrease both the workload and network traffic towards the data centers of media providers.Motivated by the increasing popularity of live casting on social media platforms,in this paper we focus on the case of live video transcoding.Specifically,we investigate scheduling heuristics that decide on which jobs should be assigned to an edge minidatacenter and which to a backend datacenter.Through simulation experiments with different Qo S requirements we conclude on the best alternative.

Vast amounts of data are produced with the development of smart cities and urban computing technologies.The data is often captured from multiple sensors,with heterogeneous structures and highly decentralized connections.Integrated data representation and smart computational models are required for more complex tasks in urban computing.We dwell deeply on two fundamental questions—can we provide an integrated data representation for the whole cyber–physical–social system?And,can we provide an integrated framework to choose the appropriate data for understanding a specific urban event?A holography data representation and the quasi-holography computational model have been proposed to address these problems.We describe case studies using the quasi-holography computational model,and discuss further problems to solve regarding our model.

An unavoidable but reusable waste so as to enhance a more circular waste utilization has been spent potlining(SPL) generated by the aluminum industry.The combustion mechanisms, evolved gasses, and ash properties of SPL were characterized dynamically in response to the elevated temperature and heating rates.Differential scanning calorimetric(DSC) results indicated an exothermic reaction behavior probably able to meet the energy needs of various industrial applications.The reaction mechanisms for the SPL combustion were best described using the 1.5-, 3-and 2.5-order reaction models.Fluoride volatilization rate of the flue gas was estimated at 2.24%.The SPL combustion emitted CO_(2), HNCO, NO, and NO_(2) but SO_(x).The joint optimization of remaining mass, derivative thermogravimetry, and derivative DSC was achieved with the optimal temperature and heating rate combination of 783.5 ℃, and 5 ℃/min, respectively.Interaction between temperature and heating rate exerted the strongest and weakest impact on DSC and remaining mass, respectively.The fluorine mainly as the formation of substantial NaF and CaF_(2) in the residual ash.Besides,the composition and effect of environment of residual solid were evaluated.The ash slagging tendency and its mineral deposition mechanisms were elucidated in terms of turning SPL waste into a benign input to a circular waste utilization.

Most of our learning comes from other people or from our own experience. For instance, when a taxi driver is seeking passengers on an unknown road in a large city, what should the driver do？ Alternatives include cruising around the road or waiting for a time period at the roadside in the hopes of finding a passenger or just leaving for another road enroute to a destination he knows （e.g., hotel taxi rank）？ This is an interesting problem that arises everyday in cities all over the world. There could be different answers to the question poised above, but one fundamental problem is how the driver learns about the likelihood of finding passengers on a road that is new to him （as he has not picked up or dropped off passengers there before）. Our observation from large scale taxi driver trace data is that a driver not only learns from his own experience but through interactions with other drivers. In this paper, we first formally define this problem as socialized information learning （SIL）, second we propose a framework including a series of models to study how a taxi driver gathers and learns information in an uncertain environment through the use of his social network. Finally, the large scale real life data and empirical experiments confirm that our models are much more effective, efficient and scalable that prior work on this problem.

Online social networks(OSNs)are immensely prevalent and have now become a ubiquitous and important part of the modern,developed society.However,online social networks pose significant problems to digital forensic investigators who have no experience online.Data will reside on multiples of servers in multiple countries,across multiple jurisdictions.Capturing it before it is overwritten or deleted is a known problem,mirrored in other cloud based services.In this article,a novel method has been developed for the extraction,analysis,visualization,and comparison of snapshotted user profile data from the online social network Twitter.The research follows a process of design,implementation,simulation,and experimentation.Source code of the tool that was developed to facilitate data extraction has been made available on the Internet.

In 2008, the Brazilian Department of Science and Technology created the INCTs (Brazilian Science and Technology institutes). One of them was the Cancer Control INCT. Due to its importance and considering that there are different groups working together in the same area, it is important that they collaborate intensely. Envisioning an empowerment of scientific collaboration, the BRINCA project was created to support a set of analyses of the social networks from this particular INCT. These analyses were created by mining curricular and publications bases, and identifying different types of scientific relationships and areas. We were able to observe, for instance, how the interaction is amongst researchers from related areas, which researchers were more collaborative and which ones were isolated from the network. These analyzes were used by the INCT coordination to understand and act to improve scientific collaboration.
