Sea ice thickness analyses for the Bohai Sea using MODIS thermal infrared imagery

Level ice thickness distribution pattern in the Bohai Sea in the winter of 2009-2010 was investigated in this paper using MODIS night-time thermal infrared imagery. The cloud cover in the imagery was masked out manually. Level ice thickness was calculated using MODIS ice surface temperature and an ice surface heat balance equation. Weather forcing data was from the European centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts （ECMWF） analyses. The retrieved ice thickness agreed reasonable well with in situ observations from two off-shore oil platforms. The overall bias and the root mean square error of the MODIS ice thickness are -1.4 cm and 3.9 cm, respectively. The MODIS results under cold conditions （air temperature 〈 -10~C） also agree with the estimated ice growth from Lebedev and Zubov models. The MODIS ice thickness is sensitive to the changes of the sea ice and air temperature, in particular when the sea ice is relatively thin. It is less sensitive to the wind speed. Our method is feasible for the Bohai Sea operational ice thickness analyses during cold freezing seasons.

The typhoon, as a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean with high wind speed and heavy rainfall, is one of the most lethal and costly of natural disasters for the densely populated countries of East Asia. It can be easily detected by space-borne sensors operated at microwave, visible or infrared bands （Liu et al., 2014）. Synthetic Aperture Radar （SAR） is a kind of active imaging radar, which can detect the targets with high resolution at one-meter level. SARs can be used to extract the sea surface wind and the eyes of typhoons or hurricanes （Friedman and Li, 2000; Zhang and Perrie, 2012; Li, 2015; Jin et al., 2014; Liu et al., 2014）. As a pioneer project of Haiyang-3 （HY-3）, the Chinese C-band SAR satellite of Gaofen-3 （GF-3） was launched in August 2016 under China High-resolution Earth Observation System （CEOS）. GF-3 carries a multi-polarized C-band SAR with a highest spatial resolution of one meter, the most imaging modes in the word of twelve and a long designed lifespan of 8 years. Haiyang-2A （HY-2A）, which was launched in August 2011, is the first Chinese marine dynamic environment satellite with a main payload of Ku-band microwave scatterometer （Jiang et al., 2012; Ye et al., 2015）. One of the objectives of HY-2A scatterometer （HY-2A SCAT） is monitoring sea surface wind field of global ocean.

Microwave remote sensing is one of the most useful methods for observing the ocean parameters. The Doppler frequency or interferometric phase of the radar echoes can be used for an ocean surface current speed retrieval,which is widely used in spaceborne and airborne radars. While the effect of the ocean currents and waves is interactional. It is impossible to retrieve the ocean surface current speed from Doppler frequency shift directly. In order to study the relationship between the ocean surface current speed and the Doppler frequency shift, a numerical ocean surface Doppler spectrum model is established and validated with a reference. The input parameters of ocean Doppler spectrum include an ocean wave elevation model, a directional distribution function, and wind speed and direction. The suitable ocean wave elevation spectrum and the directional distribution function are selected by comparing the ocean Doppler spectrum in C band with an empirical geophysical model function（CDOP）. What is more, the error sensitivities of ocean surface current speed to the wind speed and direction are analyzed. All these simulations are in Ku band. The simulation results show that the ocean surface current speed error is sensitive to the wind speed and direction errors. With VV polarization, the ocean surface current speed error is about 0.15 m/s when the wind speed error is 2 m/s, and the ocean surface current speed error is smaller than 0.3 m/s when the wind direction error is within 20° in the cross wind direction.

The SAR（Synthetic Aperture Radar） has the capabilities for all-weather day and night use. In the case of determining the effects of oil spill dumping, the oil spills areas are shown as dark spots in the SAR ***, using SAR data to detect oil spills is becoming progressively popular in operational monitoring, which is useful for oceanic environmental protection and hazard reduction. Research has been conducted on the polarization decomposition and scattering characteristics of oil spills from a scattering matrix using allpolarization of the SAR data, calculation of the polarization parameters, and utilization of the CPD（Co-polarized Phase Difference） of the oil and the sea, in order to extract the oil spill information. This method proves to be effective by combining polarization parameters with the characteristics of oil spill. The results show that when using Bragg, the oil spill backscattering machine with Enopy and a mean scatter α parameter. The oil spill can be successfully identified. However, the parameter mechanism of the oil spill remains unclear. The use of CPD can easily extract oil spill information from the ocean, and the polarization research provides a base for oil spill remote sensing detection.

This paper proposed a virtual quadtree (VQT) based loose architecture of multi-level massive geospatial data for integrating massive geospatial data dispersed in the departments of different hierarchies in the same sector into a unified GIS (Geographic Information System) platform. By virtualizing the nodes of the quad-tree,the VQT separates the structure of data organization from data storage,and screens the difference between the data storage in local computer and in the re-mote computers in network environment. And by mounting,VQT easily integrates the data from the remote computers into the local VQT so as to implement seam-less integration of distributed multi-level massive geospatial data. Based on that mode,the paper built an application system with geospatial data over 1200 GB distributed in 12 servers deployed in 12 cities. The experiment showed that all data can be seamlessly rapidly traveled and performed zooming in and zooming out smoothly.

On the basis of the satellite maps of sea level anomaly（MSLA） data and in situ tidal gauge sea level data,correlation analysis and empirical mode decomposition（EMD） are employed to investigate the applicability of MSLA data,sea level correlation,long-term sea level variability（SLV） trend,sea level rise（SLR） rate and its geographic distribution in the South China Sea（SCS）.The findings show that for Dongfang Station,Haikou Station,Shanwei Station and Zhapo Station,the minimum correlation coefficient between the closest MSLA grid point and tidal station is *** suggests that the satellite altimeter MSLA data are effective to observe the coastal SLV in the *** the monthly scale,coastal SLV in the western and northern part of SCS are highly associated with coastal *** the seasonal scale,SLV of the coastal area in the western part of the SCS is still strongly influenced by the coastal current system in summer and *** Pacific change can affect the SCS mainly in winter rather than summer and the affected area mostly concentrated in the northeastern and eastern parts of the ***,the average SLR in the SCS is 90.8 mm with a rising rate of（5.0±0.4） mm/a during1993–*** SLR rate from the southern Luzon Strait through the Huangyan Seamount area to the Xisha Islands area is higher than that of other areas of the SCS.

We used twodimensional numerical simulations to investigate smallscale convection in the upper mantlelithosphere system with depth and temperaturedependent viscosity. Our aim was to examine the mechanism of craton thinning by thermal con vection. The model domain is 700 km deep and 700 km wide with a resolution of 71x71 nodes and 160000 markers. The ve locity boundary conditions are freeslip along all the boundaries. A thermal insulation condition was applied at the two side walls, with constant temperatures for the top and bottom boundaries. We assumed an initial temperature of 273 K at the upper boundary and 1673 K at the lower boundary, and 1573 K at the bottom of the lithosphere （200 km depth） for the thick, cold, and stable North China Craton （NCC）. We calculated the thermal evolution in the upper mantle when the temperature at its bottom is raised because of lower mantle convection or plumes. The temperature at the bottom of the upper mantle was set at 1773, 1873, 1973, and 2073 K for different models to study the temperature effect on the lithospheric thinning processes. Our endmember calculations show that with the bottom boundary raising the lithosphere can be thinned from a depth of 200 km to a depth of between 100 and 126.25 km. The thinning rates are at mm/y order of magnitude, and the thinning timescale is about 10 Ma.
