Intraspecific variation in shoot flammability in Dracophyllum rosmarinifolium is not predicted by habitat environmental conditions

Background:Flammability is a compound plant trait that can vary significantly across natural populations within *** intraspecific variation in flammability provides insights into the evolution of plant flam-mability and inform understanding of wildfire risk and behaviour in different ***:We measured four flammability variables,representing ignitibility(time to ignition),sustainability(total burning time),combustibility(maximum temperature during burning)and consumability(percentage of biomass consumed by fire)to assess the shoot-level flammability of Dracophyllum rosmarinifolium(***.)(Ericaceae),a polymorphic endemic species distributed throughout New *** examined the relationship between flammability components and a suite of climatic and geographic variables(elevation,latitude,mean annual temperature(MAT),mean annual rainfall(MAR)of the sample locations,etc.).Results:We measured shoot-level flammability components of 62 individuals across eight *** time,maximum temperature and burnt biomass were positively correlated with each other,while ignition score was independent of other flammability *** flammability components varied significantly across the eight *** habitat conditions we considered were not related to any of the shoot-level flammability components of ***:Intraspecific variation in flammability in *** may be a byproduct of selection on other functional traits,such as leaf size,shoot lipid content,indicating that plant flammability is an incidental result,rather than selected for,at least in ecosystems without fire as a selective force.

Consistent response of nematode communities to management of coniferous plantations

Background:Crop-tree thinning (CTT) is a forest management practice aiming at enhancing the growth of target trees in plantations by harvesting neighboring trees. Along with the positive effect on tree growth, thinning represents a disturbance, which likely affects belowground organisms and may feed back to stand ***, the impact of CTT on the belowground food web is poorly understood. Since nematodes are species-rich and abundant belowground organisms, occupying a variety of trophic positions in soil food webs and being sensitive to disturbances, they serve as ecological indicators of ecosystem ***:We studied the effect of CTT on the soil nematode community structure in pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.),Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) and cypress (Cupressus funebris Endl.) plantations in the sichuan Basin three years after applying CTT. Crop-tree thinning significantly increased the abundance of soil nematodes in each of the plantations. Moreover, CTT significantly increased the relative abundance of herbivorous nematodes in each of the plantations. Furthermore, CTT increased the proportion of stress tolerators (c-p 1)and enrichment opportunists (c-p 2) and reduced the maturity, structure and enrichment indices of nematodes in Chinese fir and cypress plantations, while only subtle changes were observed in pine plantations. Interestingly,across plantations, the effects of CTT on soil nematode communities were mainly due to changes in microbial biomass nitrogen and understory vegetation ***:Forest management practices resulting in more open canopies uniformly affect soil food webs by changing the quantity and quality of resources associated with increased understory cover and diversity as well as microbial food. Background:Soil fungi play crucial roles in ecosystem ***,how snow cover change associated with winter warming affects soil fungal communities remains unclear in the Tibetan ***:We conducted a snow manipulation experiment to explore immediate and legacy effects of snow exclusion on soil fungal community diversity and composition in a spruce forest on the eastern Tibetan *** fungal communities were performed by the high throughput sequencing of ***:Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the two dominant fungal phyla and Archaeorhizomyces,Aspergillus and Amanita were the three most common genera across seasons and snow *** exclusion did not affect the diversity and structure of soil fungal community in both snow-covered and snow-free ***,the relative abundance of some fungal communities was different among *** fungal groups were correlated with environmental factors(i.e.,temperature and moisture)and soil biochemical variables(i.e.,ammonium and enzyme).Conclusions:These results suggest that the season-driven variations had stronger impacts on soil fungal community than short-term snow cover *** findings may have important implications for soil microbial processes in Tibetan forests experiencing significant decreases in snowfall.

Background:Changes in foliar nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)stoichiometry play important roles in predicting the efects of global change on ecosystem structure and ***,there is substantial debate on the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry,particularly under diferent levels of N ***,we conducted a global meta-analysis to investigate how N addition alters the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry across different rates and durations of P addition and plant growth types based on more than 1150 ***:We found that P addition without N addition increased foliar N concentrations,whereas P addition with N addition had no *** positive efects of P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N ***,the efects of P addition on foliar N,P and N:P ratios varied with the rate and duration of P *** particular,short-term or low-dose P addition with and without N addition increased foliar N concentration,and the positive efects of short-term or low-dose P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N *** responses of foliar N and P stoichiometry of evergreen plants to P addition were greater without N addition than with N ***,regardless of N addition,soil P availability was more efective than P resorption efciency in predicting the changes in foliar N and P stoichiometry in response to P ***:Our results highlight that increasing N deposition might alter the response of foliar N and P stoichiometry to P addition and demonstrate the important efect of the experimental environment on the *** results advance our understanding of the response of plant nutrient use efciency to P addition with increasing N deposition.
