As a kernel parameter of the TOPMODEL-concept-based land surface model （LSM）, topographic in- dex （TI） is commonly derived from high resolution digital elevation model （DEM）. Various approaches to compute TI by using different algorithms have been developed in previous literature. However, fiat areas and pits in DEMs of real watershed sometimes impose an arbitrary and spatially constant drainage density which may cause conventional retrieval methods to be very computer-intensive, especially for regional or global climate simulations where rugged mountainous areas are mixed with fiat terrains in the DEM. In this paper, we propose a new approach to overcome this shortcoming by introducing a quantile classification to sort the DEM into eight categories at first and then using a fast and simple algorithm to process the fiat areas, fill up pits in the DEM, and make it undulating. Thereafter, the algorithm can be directly applied to assigning flow directions of each cell of the processed DEM rather than taking the complicated approach of Jenson and Domingue. This approach dramatically promotes the computing efficiency with a much easier and faster processing. In addition, the effects of different TI computing approaches on the TOPMODEL-concept-based hydrological simulations are investigated based on experimental simulations over a small-scale watershed gauged by the Yonshuijie hydrological station and a large-scale watershed controlled by the Hanzhong hydrological station, respectively. The results show that the new approach is 13 times faster than the conventional one in TI retrieving, and no evident differences are found in rainfall- runoff simulations when using different algorithms in TI computations. These suggest that the proposed new approach for TI computation can be taken as an alternative and used in the TOPMODEL-concept- based hydrological simulations owning to its simplicity and high efficiency, especially for relevant regional and global studies.

Increased human activities in China's coastal zone have resulted in the depletion of ecological land ***,conducting current and future multi-scenario simulation research on land use and land cover change(LUCC)is crucial for guiding the healthy and sustainable development of coastal *** dynamic(SD)-future land use simulation(FLUS)model,a coupled simulation model,was developed to analyze land use dynamics in China's coastal *** model encompasses five scenarios,namely,SSP1-RCP2.6(A),SSP2-RCP4.5(B),SSP3-RCP4.5(C),SSP4-RCP4.5(D),and SSP5-RCP8.5(E).The SD model simulates land use demand on an annual basis up to the year ***,the FLUS model determines the spatial distribution of land use for the near term(2035),medium term(2050),and long term(2100).Results reveal a slowing trend in land use changes in China's coastal zone from 2000–*** these changes,the expansion rate of construction land was the highest and exhibited an annual *** 2100,land use predictions exhibit high accuracy,and notable differences are observed in trends across *** summary,the expansion of production,living,and ecological spaces toward the sea remains *** A emphasizes reduced land resource dependence,benefiting ecological land *** B witnesses an intensified expansion of artificial *** C sees substantial land needs for living and production,while Scenario D shows coastal forest and grassland ***,in Scenario E,the conflict between humans and land *** study presents pertinent recommendations for the future development,utilization,and management of coastal areas in *** research contributes valuable scientific support for informed,long-term strategic decision making within coastal regions.

"Hu Huan-yong Line(Hu Line)"depicts a geographical pattern of China’s population *** essence is the regionality of humanland relationship and reflects basic characteristics and laws of human beings’adaptation to the natural *** the development of the times and the progress of modern science and technology,especially the rapid urbanization and construction of transportation network system in China,the connection between economic and geographical space has been continuously *** geographical transition zones from mountain areas to plains,i.e.,transitional geographical space,have promoted the changes in human-land relationships through population migration and *** sichuan-Yunnan provinces at the southern end of Hu Line as study area,this study analyzed the spatial correlation between population distribution and economy in this region,explored the pattern of geographical agglomeration and deagglomeration,and explained the changing characteristics of humanland relationship in transitional geographic space using global Moran’s I index,global regression model(GRM)and geographically weighted regression(GWR).The results show that population and Gross Domestic Product(GDP)have significant spatial dependence to this region,with obvious aggregation in geographical distribution and positive autocorrelation;comparing with the general least square model,the GWR model incorporating spatial effect was more suitable for revealing the distribution characteristics of geographical elements,with fine results and better fitting;the spatial model of population and GDP as well as the spatio-temporal evolution model of their changes,all of them strongly indicated that Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)and road density were important factors governing the spatial differentiation of population and economy;under the rapid development of regional economy and continuous evolution of urban-rural relations,rural transformation and spa

Quantitative assessment of the impact of climate variability and human activities on runoff plays a pivotal role in water resource management and maintaining ecosystem *** study considered six sub-basins in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River basin,China,to reveal the trend of the runoff evolution and clarify the driving factors of the changes during 1956–*** regression,Mann-Kendall test,and sliding t-test were used to study the trend of the hydrometeorological elements,while cumulative distance level and ordered clustering methods were applied to identify mutation *** contributions of climate change and human disturbance to runoff changes were quantitatively assessed using three methods,i.e.,the rainfall-runoff relationship method,slope variation method,and variable infiltration capacity(Budyko)hypothesis ***,the availability and stability of the three methods were *** results showed that the runoff in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River basin exhibited a decreasing trend from 1956 to 2020,with an abrupt change in *** attribution analysis,the runoff series could be divided into two phases,i.e.,1961–1985(baseline period)and 1986–2020(changing period);and it was found that the rainfall-runoff relationship method with precipitation as the representative of climate factors had limited usability compared with the other two methods,while the slope variation and Budyko hypothesis methods had highly consistent *** factors showed different effects in the sub-basins of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River ***,human disturbance was the main factor that contributed to the runoff changes,accounting for 53.0%–82.0%;and the contribution of climate factors to the runoff change was 17.0%–47.0%,making it the secondary factor,in which precipitation was the most representative climate *** results provide insights into how climate and anthropogenic changes synergistically influence the runoff of t

Sesame and groundnut crops are the major oilseed crops produced for exports and local consumptions in *** study attempted to evaluate land suitability for oilseeds crops using Geographic Information Systems(GIS)and multi-criteria evaluation in Diga district of East Wollega zone,western *** support the growing population,sesame and groundnut land suitability evaluations were carried out to ensure the sustainability of agricultural *** data inputs were used,including mainly climate data(temperature and rainfall),topography data(slope),soil data(soil texture,soil depth and soil drainage),and infrastructure data(road and market).In this study,sesame and groundnut land suitability areas were categorized into 4 classes:highly suitable,moderately suitable,marginally suitable,and not *** result revealed that,about 252.1 ha(0.4%)and 113.1 ha(0.2%)were highly suitable for sesame and groundnut *** showed that most parts of the study area were moderately suitable for sesame and groundnut ***,the central and western parts of the study area were highly suitable and moderately suitable for sesame *** study recommended the local communities to utilize the existing potential of the study area for sesame and groundnut ***,decision makers should promote the suitability of the area for both small-and large-scale investment on sesame and groundnut production.

Evapotranspiration(ET) is a critical component of the global hydrological cycle, and it has a large impact on water resource management as it affects the availability of freshwater resources. It is important to understand the hydrological cycle for the water resources planning and management. This study used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) satellite derived ET, and potential evapotranspiration(PET) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) satellite derived precipitation datasets to assess the spatial and temporal distributions of ET, PET, and precipitation during the study period at Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR) region. Based on the topographic variations and land-use/land-cover distributions, the study region which includes five counties of Hubei Province and nineteen counties of Chongqing Municipality was divided into four study zones. The ET and precipitation data were evaluated using in situ observations. The ET, PET, and precipitation data were compared to analyze the spatial and long-term(2001-2016) temporal distributions of average annual ET, PET, and precipitation, and to understand the relationships between them in the study region. The results showed that each selected zone had highest ET at the counties with the Yangtze River passing through whereas lowest at the counties which were located away from the river. Results also showed increasing trends in ET and PET from south-west to north-east in the study region. Analysis showed TGR had a significant impact on spatial and temporal distributions of ET and PET in the study region. Therefore, this study helps to understand the impact of TGR on spatial and temporal distributions of ET and PET during and after the construction.

A family net of giant pandas in the Tangjiahe Natural Reserve:Assessment of current individual migration

In the present study, formalin-fixed feces, oli-gonucleotide fingerprinting and SRY-gene based sexing were used to construct a family net for giant pandas in the Tang-jiahe Natural Reserve and to assess contemporary gene flow (migration) in this population. A total of 124 fecal samples were attributed to 37 individuals (22 females and 15 males) that were then analyzed for family relationships. Based on DNA fingerprints, the deduced family net revealed the fol-lowing facts: (i) First-order relatives possessed similarities from 50% to 90%, and similarities between unrelated indi-viduals or distant relatives were as high as 77%, indicating that the Tangjiahe pandas are characterized by high genetic similarity; (ii) 15 matings were identified and 5 ones oc-curred between close relatives, implying that there is poten-tial for inbreeding to impact the pandas; (iii) four mating pairs and 5 offspring presented long distance migrations, demonstrating the intra-reserve habitat is continuous; (iv) four pairs of full sibs (also female-male dyads) dispersed short distance and all of them gave birth to highly inbred offspring, reflecting long distance migration is vital for in-breeding avoidance; (v) 17 adult individuals dispersed short or moderate distance and formed three clusters on the land-scape, indicating that it is necessary to find out whether there is a negative factor impacting the pandas.
