Surface design and engineering is a critical tool to improve the interaction of materials with their surroundings. Immobilization of soft hydrogels is one of the attractive strategies to achieve surface modification. The goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the different strategies used for surface tethering of hydrogel layers via crosslinking immobilization of pre-fabricated functional polymers. In this strategy, crosslinkable polymers are first prepared via various polymerization techniques or post-functionalization of polymers. Afterwards, the crosslinkable polymers are attached or tethered on the surfaces of substrates using a variety of approaches including photo-crosslinking, click reactions, reversible linkages, etc. For each case, the principles of hydrogel tethering have been explained in detail with representative ***, the potential applications of the as-modified substrates in specific cases have also been addressed and overviewed.

For solitary species that aggregate to breed, signals, such as sound or odor, transmitted across the landscape can play an important role in mate choice and coordinating breeding activity. Recent work on vocalizations of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), bleats and chirps that are emitted during periods of reproductive activity, has revealed that auditory communication in this species is more complicated and developed than once believed. However, playback experiments using these calls have recorded only a few behaviors over short observation times and the influence of these calls on the signaling behavior of receivers remains unknown. Here, we present results from a pilot study in which we played the bleats of male and female giant pandas in estrus to captive animals and measured vocal and chemical signaling response behavior. We found an increase in scent marking behavior, but not vocalizations, in males and females following the playback of calls made by members of the opposite sex in estrus. To our knowledge, this is the first study to detect a chemical communication response, which was marking, to an auditory signal in giant pandas. Our findings reveal a previously unknown relationship between acoustic and chemical signals in this high profile species and suggest that these two forms of signaling may be interdependent in the social lives of giant pandas.

Background:Changes in foliar nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)stoichiometry play important roles in predicting the efects of global change on ecosystem structure and ***,there is substantial debate on the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry,particularly under diferent levels of N ***,we conducted a global meta-analysis to investigate how N addition alters the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry across different rates and durations of P addition and plant growth types based on more than 1150 ***:We found that P addition without N addition increased foliar N concentrations,whereas P addition with N addition had no *** positive efects of P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N ***,the efects of P addition on foliar N,P and N:P ratios varied with the rate and duration of P *** particular,short-term or low-dose P addition with and without N addition increased foliar N concentration,and the positive efects of short-term or low-dose P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N *** responses of foliar N and P stoichiometry of evergreen plants to P addition were greater without N addition than with N ***,regardless of N addition,soil P availability was more efective than P resorption efciency in predicting the changes in foliar N and P stoichiometry in response to P ***:Our results highlight that increasing N deposition might alter the response of foliar N and P stoichiometry to P addition and demonstrate the important efect of the experimental environment on the *** results advance our understanding of the response of plant nutrient use efciency to P addition with increasing N deposition.

Several potential oxidative agents have damaging effects on mammalian reproductive *** study was conducted to investigate the effects of glutamate(Glu)and aspartate(Asp)supplementation on antioxidant enzymes and immune defense systems in the outer scrotum of boars injected with H2O2.A total of 24 healthy boars were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups:control(basal diet,saline-treated),H2O2(basal diet,H2O2-challenged outer scrotum(1 m L kg^–1 BW)),Glu(basal diet+2%Glu,H2O2-challenged),and Asp(basal diet+2%Asp,H2O2-challenged).Our results showed that both Glu and Asp supplementation improved testicular morphology and decreased the genital index in the H2O2-treated *** and Asp administration increased the antioxidant enzyme activities and affected the testicular inflammatory cytokine secretion but had no effect on sex hormone ***,the m RNA expression of CAT,Cu Zn SOD,and GPx4 was altered in the testes and epididymis of boars treated with Asp and *** and Asp supplementation also modulated the expression of TGF-β1,IL-10,TNF-α,IL-6 and IL-1βin the testis and *** results indicate that dietary Glu and Asp supplementation might enhance antioxidant capacity and regulate the secretion and expression of inflammatory cytokines to protect the testes and epididymis of boars against oxidative stress.

微生物电合成(microbial electrosynthesis,MES)利用可再生电力驱动微生物固定CO2合成化学品，在推进碳循环经济中具有一定潜力，受到广泛关注。但是，很少有研究通过高效反应器设计来促进产乙酸并降低能耗。本研究中，新型流动电极MES反应器的总产乙酸速率[(16±1) g·m-2·d-1]比无粉末活性炭(powder activated carbon,PAC)对照[(8±3) g·m-2·d-1]高两倍。流动电极MES反应器的库伦效率为43.5%±3.1%，能量消耗为(0.020±0.005) k Wh·g-1，产乙酸的能量效率为18.7%±1.3%。基于PAC的流动电极能够降低水跨膜通量、传质阻力，但是对装置电压、流变行为、乙酸吸附的影响较小。流动电极MES反应器中，能量代谢相关基因高表达，Acetobacterium的丰度增加。MES反应器中同时存在用于碳固定的还原性乙酰辅酶A途径(Wood–Ljungdahl pathway,WLP)与还原性三羧酸循环途径(reductive citric acid cycle,r TCA)。堆叠型流动电极MES中的乙酸浓度达7.0 g·L-1。本研究提供一种构建可扩展MES反应器的新方法，促进CO2利用以及产物生成。

To quantify the impacts of native vegetation on the spatial and temporal variations in hydraulic properties of bank gully concentrated flows,a series of in situ flume experiments in the bank gully were performed at the Yuanmou Gully Erosion and Collapse Experimental Station in the dry-hot valley region of the Jinsha River,Southwest *** experiment involved upstream catchment areas withone-and two-year native grass(Heteropogon contortus)and bare land drained to bare gully headcuts,i.e.,Gullies 1,2 and *** Gully 4,Heteropogon contortus and Agave sisalana were planted in the upstream catchment area and gully bed,*** these experiments,the sediment concentration in runoff in Gully 3 was the highest and that in Gully 2 was the lowest,clearly indicating that the sediment concentration in runoff obviously decreased and the deposition of sediment obviously increased as the vegetation cover *** concentrated flows were turbulent in response to the flow *** concentrated flows in the gully zones with native grass and bare land were sub-and supercritical,*** flow rate and shear stress in Gully 3 upstream catchment area were highest among the four upstream catchment areas,while the flow rate and shear stress in the gully bed of Gully 4 were lowest among the four gully beds,indicating that native grass notably decreased the bank gully flow rate and shear *** Darcy–Weisbach friction factor(resistance f)and flow energy consumption in the gully bed of Gully 4 were notably higher than those in the other three gully beds,clearly indicating that native grass increased the bank gully surface resistance and flow energy *** Reynolds number(Re),flow rate,shear stress,resistance f,and flow energy consumption in the gully beds and upstream areas increased over time,while the sediment concentration in runoff and Froude number(Fr)***,increasing vegetation cover in upstream catchment areas and downstream gully
