Liver cancer remains a global health problem and its incidence is growing *** cancer is an epidemiologically biased disease and is one of the most common cancers,especially in East *** carcinoma(HCC)is the dominant histological type of liver cancer and the principal etiological factor for HCC in Japan is hepatitis C virus(HCV),while that in other Asian countries is hepatitis B virus(HBV)(1).Other known risk factors include alcohol abuse,autoimmune hepatitis,diabetes,and several metabolic ***,the precise molecular events underlying hepatocarcinogenesis are still not fully understood,and the genetic characteristics associated with the etiologies still remain *** large-scale genomic analyses have revealed the overall landscape and there are active attempts to apply the results to clinical *** on the latest findings,we will describe the overall landscape of genomic alterations in HCC and their application to genomic medicine.

Spatial Variations of Soil Respiration in Arid Ecosystems

Soil respiration releases a major carbon flux back to atmosphere and thus plays an important role in global carbon cycling. Soil respiration is well known for its significant spatial variation in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in fragile ecosystems of arid land, where vegetation is distributed sparsely and the climate changes dramatically. In this study, soil respiration in three typical arid ecosystems: desert ecosystem (DE), desert-farmland transition ecosystem (TE) and farmland ecosystem (FE) in an arid area of northwestern China were studied for their spatial variations in 2012 and 2013. Along with soil respiration (SR), soil surface temperature (ST), soil moisture (SM) and soil electrical conductivity (ECb) were also recorded to investigate the spatial variations and the correlations among them. The results revealed that averaged soil respiration rate was much lower in DE than those in TE and FE. No single factor could adequately explain the variation of soil respiration, except a negative relationship between soil temperature and soil respiration in FE (P < 0.05). Geostatistical analysis showed that the spatial heterogeneity of soil respiration in DE was insignificant but notably in both TE and FE, especially in FE, which was mainly attributed to the different vegetation or soil moisture characteristics in the three ecosystems. The results obtained in this study will help to provide a better understanding on spatial variations of soil respiration and soil properties in arid ecosystems and also on macroscale carbon cycling evaluations.

Burn injuries are a huge public health issue for children throughout the world, with the majority occurring in developing countries. Burn injuries can leave a pediatric patient with severely debilitating and deforming contractures, which can lead to significant disability when left untreated. Rehabilitation is an essential and integral part of pediatric burn treatment. The aim of this article was to review the literature on pediatric burn rehabilitation from the Medline, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases. An attempt has been made to present the basic aspects of burn rehabilitation, provide practical information, and discuss the goals and conceptualization of rehabilitation as well as the development of rehabilitation philosophy and strategies.

Steam reforming of methanol and gasoline is actively researched and developed as hydrogen supply methods for the fuel cells of vehicles and so on. However, these materials have the problems such as the infrastructure, toxicity, difficulty of the reforming, and so forth. Dimethyl ether (DME) does not contain the poisonous substances, and is expected as a clean fuel of the next generation. DME is able to take the place of light oil and LPG, and its physical properties are similar to those of LPG. There is possibility that DME infrastructures will be settled more rapidly than those of hydrogen and methanol, because LPG infrastructures existing are able to use for DME. Then, we have been studying on steam reforming of DME for the hydrogen production.

Response of vegetation to temperature and precipitation in Xinjiang during the period of 1998-2009

In this paper,10-day spatio-temporal response of vegetation to the change of temperature and precipitation in spring,summer,autumn and whole year during the period of 1998―2009 was analyzed based on the data of SPOT VEGETATION-NDVI and 10-day average temperature or precipitation from 54 meteorological stations in *** results show that the response of 10-day NDVI to temperature was more significant than that to precipitation,and the maximal response of vegetation to temperature and precipitation lagged for two 10-day ***,the effect of temperature and precipitation on vegetation NDVI was most marked in autumn,then in spring,and it was not significant in *** response of vegetation to 10-day change of meteorological factors was positive with a long affecting duration in spring,and it had a relatively short affecting duration in autumn and ***,the 10-day maximal response of NDVI to temperature in northern Xinjiang was higher than that in southern *** correlation between the 10-day NDVI in whole year and the temperature in the 0-8th 10-day period was significantly higher than that between the annual NDVI and the annual temperature at all meteorological stations;the interannual change of NDVI was accordant well with the change of annual ***,the effect of precipitation within a year on NDVI was not *** results indicated that interannual change of temperature was not the dominant factor affecting the change of vegetation NDVI in Xinjiang,but the decrease of annual precipitation was the main factor resulting in the fluctuation of vegetation ***-day average temperature was an important factor to promote vegetation growth in Xinjiang within a year,but the effect of precipitation on vegetation growth within a year was not strong.

Plasma-induced Styrene Grafting onto the Surface of Polytetrafluoroethylene Powder for Proton Exchange Membrane Application

Low-temperature plasma treatment was adopted to graft styrene onto polytetrafluo- roethylene （PTFE） powder, which is widely used in the fabrication of proton exchange membrane （PEM）. The grafted PTFE powder was sulfonated in chlorosulfonic acid and fabricated into a membrane, which was used as inexpensive PEM material for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell （PEMFC）. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy attenuated total reflection spectroscopy （FTIR-ATR） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） analysis were used to characterize the structure of the sulfonated PTFE powder. The results showed that all the PTFE powders were successfully grafted by nitrogen plasma and then sulfonated under such experimental conditions. A scanning electron microscopy （SEM） image indicated that the fabricated membrane exhibits flat morphology and homogenous structure. The ion exchange capacity （IEC） of this kind of PEM was also investigated.

Interaction between cytotoxic T lymphocyte-asso-ciated antigen-4 (CTLA4, CD152) and B7 molecules (B7-1and B7-2) is of importance in the cellular events of lym-phocyte, including antigen-specific T-cell activation andinduction of autoreactive T-cell. We describe here the firstintroduction of a murine soluble CTLA4 gene, CTLA4Ig,to Mm1 cells, a macrophagic cell line. CTLA4Ig waJssuccessfully expressed on Mm1 cells and the expressedCTLA4Ig was found to be functionally active in their bind-ing to B7 molecules by flow cytometry and immunofluo-rescence studies- The biological activity of CTLA4Ig fromthe transfected Mm1 cells was studied and showed in-hibitory activity on mixed lymphocyte culture. Poaceae plant species,such as silver grass,are commonly used in mulching activities *** contrast,local farmers have traditionally used Japanese knotweed(Fallopia japonica)mulch in the cultivation of solanaceous crops in the Nishi-Awa area of Japan,which is a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems *** have previously evaluated the positive effects of Japanese knotweed mulching on solanaceous crops,such as eggplants,tomato,and *** the present study,we observed that the naturally occurring diseases in the solanaceous crops tended to decrease when the knotweed mulching system was adopted,in comparison to when Poaceae mulch was *** eggplants,leaf mold and powdery mildew decreased under Japanese knotweed *** further evaluated the effects of Japanese knotweed mulching by inoculating test plants with Pseudomonas *** observed suppression of bacterial disease and tomato mosaic virus under Japanese knotweed mulching and following spraying with Japanese knotweed *** addition,disease-resistance genes were expressed at high levels in Arabidopsis thaliana,a model plant,following treatment with Japanese knotweed *** results suggest that Japanese knotweed has potential applications in future sustainable agriculture activities.
