Living fossils are evidence of long-term sustained ecological ***,whether living fossils have little molecular changes remains poorly known,particularly in ***,we have introduced a novel method that integrates phylogenomic,comparative genomic,and ecological niche modeling analyses to investigate the rate of molecular evolution of Eupteleaceae,a Cretaceous relict angiosperm family endemic to East *** assembled a high-quality chromosome-level nuclear genome,and the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes of a member of Eupteleaceae(Euptelea pleiosperma).Our results show that Eupteleaceae is most basal in Ranunculales,the earliest-diverging order in eudicots,and shares an ancient whole-genome duplication event with the other *** document that Eupteleaceae has the slowest rate of molecular changes in the observed *** unusually low rate of molecular evolution of Eupteleaceae across all three independent inherited genomes and genes within each of the three genomes is in association with its conserved genome architecture,ancestral woody habit,and conserved niche *** findings reveal the evolution and adaptation of living fossil plants through large-scale environmental change and also provide new insights into early eudicot diversification.

Banana is one of the most important crops of the ***-type bananas,which have a monospecific Musa acuminata origin(AAA),account for around half of the global banana production,thereby are of great significance for human ***,until now,the high-quality haplotype-resolved reference genome was still undecoded for banana ***,we reported the telomere-to-telomere(T2T)and haplotype-resolved reference genome of‘Baxijiao’(Cavendish)consisting of three haploid *** sizes of the three haploid assemblies were estimated to be 477.16 Mb,477.18 Mb,and 469.57 Mb,*** with monospecific origins,the three haploid assemblies showed great differences with low levels of sequence *** large reciprocal translocations were identified among chromosomes 1,4,and *** expansion of gene families that might affect fruit quality and aroma was detected,such as those belonging to sucrose/disaccharide/oligosaccharide catabolic processes,sucrose metabolic process,starch metabolic process,and aromatic compound biosynthetic ***,an expansion of gene families related to anther and pollen development was observed,which could be associated with parthenocarpy and sterility of the Cavendish ***,much fewer resistance genes were identified in‘Baxijiao’than in ***,particularly in the gene clusters in chromosomes 3 and 10,providing potential targets to explore for molecular analysis of disease resistance in *** T2T haplotype-resolved reference genome will thus be a valuable genetic resource for biological studies,molecular breeding,and genetic improvement of banana.

Climate and seasonal rainfall anomalies along an elevational gradient in the El Sira Mountains,Peru,and their impacts on tree radial growth

The explicit purpose of this study was to characterize climate and vegetation along the western slope of the El Sira Mountains(Peru)and evaluate radial tree growth in response to seasonal rainfall *** May 2011 until September 2015,we monitored radial stem growth of 67 trees using point dendrometers and measured climate within five sites along an altitudinal *** transect extends from lowland terra firme forests,over submontane forests,late and mid successional montane cloud forests up to exposed elfin *** rainfall estimates by the TRMM PR satellite(product 3B42)were highly correlated with our rain gauge observations but underestimate rainfall at high *** intra-annual tree growth patterns could be identified within each elevational forest type,showing species with strictly seasonal growth,continuous growth or alternating growth patterns independent of the *** growth at each site was generally larger during rainy seasons,except for the elfin *** rainy season from October 2013 to March 2014 was extraordinarily dry,with only 73%of long-term mean precipitation received,which resulted in reduced radial growth,again with the exception of the elfin *** indicates that montane tropical rain forests may suffer from prolonged droughts,while exposed ridges with elfin forests still receive plenty of precipitation and benefit from receiving more solar radiation for photosynthesis.

A Whole Plant Herbaceous Angiosperm from the Middle Jurassic of China

In contrast to woody habit with secondary growth, truthful herbaceous habit lacking secondary growth is restricted to angiosperms among seed plants. Although angiosperms might have occurred as early as in the Triassic and herbaceous habit theoretically may have been well adopted by pioneer angiosperms, pre-Cretaceous herbs are missing hitherto, leaving the origin of herbs and evolution of herbaceous angiosperms mysterious. Here we report Juraherba bodae gen. et sp. nov, a whole plant herbaceous angiosperm, from the Middle Jurassic （〉164 Ma） at Daohugou Village, Inner Mongolia, China, a fossil Lagerst^itten that is worldwide famous for various fossil finds. The angiospermous affinity of Juraherba is ensured by its enclosed ovules/seeds. The plant is small but complete, with physically connected hairy root, stem, leaves, and fructifications. The Middle Jurassic age recommends Juraherba as the earliest record of herbaceous seed plants, demanding a refresh look at the evolutionary history of angiosperms.

Winter pairs of ruddy shelducks at Lashihai lake,southwest China

It has been suggested that pairing behavior during winter in migratory ducks represents a trade-off between costs(defense of the female)and benefits(early access to females).To investigate the benefits and costs for both sexes in wintering pairs of ruddy shelducks(Tadorna ferruginea),we compared time budgets for paired males and females,and surveyed the sex ratio of the birds wintering at Lashihai lake,southwest *** behavior of the paired ruddy shelducks was monitored for 5 activity types:feeding,resting(including sleeping),preening,drinking and *** was the most dominant *** feeding time of both sexes increased as the winter season ***,the paired females always spent significantly more time feeding and less time warning than the paired *** ruddy shelducks had access to better feeding grounds than unpaired individuals,resulting in a food benefit for paired individuals over single *** the sex ratio of the wintering population was strongly male biased(M:F=1.44:1.00),the paired male also gained the benefit of accessing a female in advance of the breeding season.

Effects of the Substrate pH on the Growth of Wild Gesneriaceae Plants

The cultivation experiment was carried out on five species of Gesneriaceae plants （ Oreocharis benthamiivar, reticulate, O. argyreia, O. benthamii, Chinita laxiflora, and C. depressa）. The growth traits including crown volume growth, number of leaves and chlorophyll content of each plant cultivated in different pH substrates were measured and analyzed. The pH and conductivity of the original habitat soil were measured as well. The results showed that these five species of Gesneriaceae preferred acidic environment, which could grow well in the matrix of 5 -6 pH range with the steady physiological indicators. The physical and chemical properties of the original habitat soil showed that these five species were resistant to barren, while favored humid environment and a large quantity of water. It is necessary to adjust physical and chemical properties of matdx according to their habits to improve their growth in the cultivation.

Rapid urbanization in mountainous coastal areas causes dramatic changes in land use and land cover(LUCC)for their geographic *** understand changes in landscape trajectories in such regions,we examined temporal and spatial changes in urban landscapes in shenzhen,China,a city that has undergone rapid urbanization in recent decades,and investigated the drivers of landscape pattern evolution at different scales from LUCC data from 1985,1995,2005,and *** results show that the landscape of shenzhen has changed dramatically over the 30 years from 1985 to *** proportion of forest area decreased from 50.81%to 37.81%,while the proportion of construction land increased from 17.83%to 48.28%.The changes in the landscape patterns in shenzhen were driven mainly by human *** study is one of the first to assess landscape dynamics of the rapid urbanization from the angle of mountainous coastal area,which plays an important role in the land use and city regulation of the global coastal mountains.
