Machine learning and geostatistical approaches for estimating aboveground biomass in Chinese subtropical forests

Background:Aboveground biomass(AGB)is a fundamental indicator of forest ecosystem productivity and health and hence plays an essential role in evaluating forest carbon reserves and supporting the development of targeted forest management ***:Here,we proposed a random forest/co-kriging framework that integrates the strengths of machine learning and geostatistical approaches to improve the mapping accuracies of AGB in northern Guangdong Province of *** used Landsat time-series observations,Advanced Land Observing Satellite(ALOS)Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(PALSAR)data,and National Forest Inventory(NFI)plot measurements,to generate the forest AGB maps at three time points(1992,2002 and 2010)showing the spatio-temporal dynamics of AGB in the subtropical forests in Guangdong,***:The proposed model was capable of mapping forest AGB using spectral,textural,topographical variables and the radar backscatter coefficients in an effective and reliable *** root mean square error of the plotlevel AGB validation was between 15.62 and 53.78 t∙ha^(−1),the mean absolute error ranged from 6.54 to 32.32 t∙ha^(−1),the bias ranged from−2.14 to 1.07 t∙ha^(−1),and the relative improvement over the random forest algorithm was between 3.8%and 17.7%.The largest coefficient of determination(0.81)and the smallest mean absolute error(6.54 t∙ha^(−1)were observed in the 1992 AGB *** spectral saturation effect was minimized by adding the PALSAR data to the modeling variable set in *** adding elevation as a covariable,the co-kriging outperformed the ordinary kriging method for the prediction of the AGB residuals,because co-kriging resulted in better interpolation results in the valleys and plains of the study ***:Validation of the three AGB maps with an independent dataset indicated that the random forest/cokriging performed best for AGB prediction,followed by random forest coupled with ordinary kriging(random forest/ordinary krigi

Measuring time accessibility and its spatial characteristics in the urban areas of Beijing

Construction of road infrastructure is fundamental to city operation and development, as well as an important pathway and focus in physical urban-rural integration. The long-term implementation of a system of ring roads plus radiating roads in Beijing has strongly impacted urban infrastructure construction and space-time accessibility. Particularly, recent rapid growth of private car ownership in Beijing has imposed greater loads on its road system, seriously hampering urban commuting efficiency and negatively impacting quality of life. To address such challenges and enhance the rapid development of transport infrastructure, Beijing has accelerated rail transit construction since 2008 in an effort to improve commuting capacity. This paper aims to measure time accessibility and its spatial characteristics in urban areas of Beijing by applying a comprehensive method that combines vector and raster attribute data generated from road network and subway transport infrastructure. By using a dual index of accessibility and road density, the study further reveals the features of and differences in spatial accessibility and the construction of road systems in urban areas of the northern and southern parts of Beijing. The findings of this study can provide a scientific basis for future urban planning and road system construction both in general and with respect to Beijing, given its aspirations to become a world city.

We propose a fundamental theorem for eco-environmental surface modelling(FTEEM) in order to apply it into the fields of ecology and environmental science more easily after the fundamental theorem for Earth’s surface system modeling(FTESM). The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH) region is taken as a case area to conduct empirical studies of algorithms for spatial upscaling, spatial downscaling, spatial interpolation, data fusion and model-data assimilation, which are based on high accuracy surface modelling(HASM), corresponding with corollaries of FTEEM. The case studies demonstrate how eco-environmental surface modelling is substantially improved when both extrinsic and intrinsic information are used along with an appropriate method of HASM. Compared with classic algorithms, the HASM-based algorithm for spatial upscaling reduced the root-meansquare error of the BTH elevation surface by 9 m. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial downscaling reduced the relative error of future scenarios of annual mean temperature by 16%. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial interpolation reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean precipitation by 0.2%. The HASM-based algorithm for data fusion reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean temperature by 70%. The HASM-based algorithm for model-data assimilation reduced the relative error of carbon stocks by 40%. We propose five theoretical challenges and three application problems of HASM that need to be addressed to improve FTEEM.

Host phylogeny and environment have all been implicated in shaping the gut microbiota and host metabolic traits of ***,few studies have evaluated phylogeny-associated microbial assembly and host metabolic plasticity concurrently,and their relationships on both short-term and evolutionary *** report that the branching order of a gut microbial dendrogram was nearly congruent with phylogenetic relationships of seven rodent species,and this pattern of phylosymbiosis was intact after diverse laboratory *** rearing,diet or air temperature(Ta) acclimation induced alterations in gut microbial communities,but could not override host phylogeny in shaping microbial community assembly.A simulative heatwave reduced core microbiota diversity by 26% in these species,and led to an unmatched relationship between the microbiota and host metabolic phenotypes in desert ***,the similarity of metabolic traits across species at different Tas was not correlated with phylogenetic *** data demonstrated that the gut microbial assembly showed strong concordance with host phylogeny and may be shaped by environmental variables,whereas host metabolic traits did not seem to be linked with phylogeny.

How Chinese Financial centers Integrate into Global Financial center Networks:An Empirical Study Based on Overseas Expansion of Chinese Financial Service Firms

The increasing globalization of the Chinese economy has been enabled by both Chinese financial institutions operating globally as well as international firms operating within China. In geographical terms, this has been organized through a number of strategic cities serving as gateways for the exchange of financial functions, products and practices between China and the global economy. Drawing on location data of financial service firms in China listed on stock exchanges in shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong, this paper shows that Chinese financial firms are expanding globally and how Chinese financial centers are positioned and connected in the urban networks shaped by these financial service firms. It is found that Hong Kong, China, holds strategic positions in the integration of Chinese cities into global financial center networks, and that establishing a foothold in global financial centers such as New York and London has been a priority for Chinese financial institutions. The increasing capital flows directed by Chinese financial institutionssuggests a shifting global financial geography, with numerous Chinese cities playing increasingly important roles within global financial center networks.

Nitrogen oxides(NOx),significant contributors to air pollution and climate change,form aerosols and ozone in the ***,timely,and transparent information on NOx emissions is essential for decision-making to mitigate both haze and ozone ***,a comprehensive understanding of the trends and drivers behind anthropogenic NOx emissions from Chinadthe world's largest emitterdhas been lacking since 2020 due to delays in emissions *** we show a consistent decline in China's NOx emissions from 2020 to 2022,despite increased fossil fuel consumption,utilizing satellite observations as constraints for NOx emission estimates through atmospheric *** reduction is corroborated by data from two independent spaceborne instruments:the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument(TROPOMI)and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument(OMI).Notably,a reduction in transport emissions,largely due to the COVID-19 lockdowns,slightly decreased China's NOx emissions in *** subsequent years,2021 and 2022,reductions in NOx emissions were driven by the industry and transport sectors,influenced by stringent air pollution *** satellite-based inversion system developed in this study represents a significant advancement in the real-time monitoring of regional air pollution emissions from space.

miR-137 and miR-491 Negatively Regulate Dopamine Transporter Expression and Function in Neural Cells

Abstract The dopamine transporter （DAT） is involved in the regulation of extracellular dopamine levels. A 40-bp variable-number tandem repeat （VNTR） polymorphism in the 3-untranslated region （3UTR） of the DAT has been reported to be associated with various phenotypes that are involved in the aberrant regulation of dopaminergic neu- rotransmission. In the present study, we found that miR- 137 and miR-491 caused a marked reduction of DAT expression, thereby influencing neuronal dopamine trans- port. Moreover, the regulation of miR-137 and miR-491 on this transport disappeared after the DAT was silenced. The miR-491 seed region that is located on the VNTR sequence in the 3＇UTR of the DAT and the regulatory effect of miR- 491 on the DAT depended on the VNTR copy-number. These data indicate that miR-137 and miR-491 regulate DAT expression and dopamine transport at the post- transcriptional level, suggesting that microRNA may be targeted for the treatment of diseases associated with DAT dysfunction.
