Predicting the coefficient of friction in a sliding contact by applying machine learning to acoustic emission data

It is increasingly important to monitor sliding interfaces within machines,since this is where both energy is lost,and failures *** emission(AE)techniques offer a way to monitor contacts remotely without requiring transparent or electrically conductive ***,acoustic data from sliding contacts is notoriously complex and difficult to ***,we simultaneously measure coefficient of friction(with a conventional force transducer)and acoustic emission(with a piezoelectric sensor and high acquisition rate digitizer)produced by a steel‒steel rubbing *** data is then used to train machine learning(ML)algorithms(e.g.,Gaussian process regression(GPR)and support vector machine(SVM))to correlated acoustic emission with *** training requires the dense AE data to first be reduced in size and a range of processing techniques are assessed for this(e.g.,down-sampling,averaging,fast Fourier transforms(FFTs),histograms).Next,fresh,unseen AE data is given to the trained model and the resulting friction predictions are compared with the directly measured *** is excellent agreement between the measured and predicted friction when the GPR model is used on AE histogram data,with root mean square(RMS)errors as low as 0.03 and Pearson correlation coefficients reaching ***,predictions remain accurate despite changes in test conditions such as normal load,reciprocating frequency,and stroke *** paves the way for remote,acoustic measurements of friction in inaccessible locations within machinery to increase mechanical efficiency and avoid costly failure/needless maintenance.

Vedolizumab use in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases undergoing surgery:clinical trials and post-marketing experience

Background:Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases frequently require surgery,but immunotherapies used in disease management may increase the risk of post-operative *** investigated frequencies of post-operative complications in patients who received vedolizumab—a gut-selective antibody approved for the treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease—in clinical-trial and post-marketing ***:This post hoc analysis of safety data from GEMINI 1,GEMINI 2,and long-term safety studies included patients who had had colectomy or bowel surgery/*** from the post-marketing Vedolizumab global Safety Database were also analysed(data cutoff point:19 May 2016).Adverse events relating to post-operative complications were identified using Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities preferred ***:Of 58 total surgeries in patients included in GEMINI 1 and GEMINI 2,post-operative complications were reported for 3/51 vedolizumab-treated patients(5.9%)and 1/7 placebo-treated patients(14.3%).In the long-term safety study,157/2,243 patients(7%)had colectomy or bowel surgery/resection;of these 157 patients who underwent surgery,11(7%)experienced a post-operative *** time between last pre-operative vedolizumab dose and surgery was 23 days in GEMINI 1,20 days in GEMINI 2,and 39–40 days in the long-termsafety *** the post-marketing setting,based on data covering approximately 46,978 patient-years of vedolizumab exposure,post-operative complications were reported in 19 ***:In clinical trials,complications of colectomy and bowel surgery/resection appeared infrequent,with minimal difference between vedolizumab and *** frequency of post-operative complications in the post-marketing setting appears low.

Metabolomic Profiling in Selaginella lepidophylla at Various Hydration States Provides New Insights into the Mechanistic Basis of Desiccation Tolerance

Selaginella lepidophylla is one of only a few species of spike mosses （Selaginellaceae） that have evolved des-iccation tolerance （DT） or the ability to ＇resurrect＇ from an air-dried state. In order to understand the metabolic basis of DT, S, lepidophylla was subjected to a five-stage, rehydration/dehydration cycle, then analyzed using non-biased, global metabolomics profiling technology based on GC/MS and UHLC/MS/MS2 platforms. A total of 251 metabolites including 167 named （66.5%） and 84 （33.4%） unnamed compounds were characterized. Only 42 （16.7%） and 74 （29.5%） of compounds showed significantly increased or decreased abundance, respectively, indicating that most compounds were produced con-stitutively, including highly abundant trehalose, sucrose, and glucose. Several glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and tricarboxylic acid （TCA） cycle intermediates showed increased abundance at 100% relative water content （RWC） and 50% RWC. Vanillate, a potent antioxidant, was also more abundant in the hydrated state. Many different sugar alcohols and sugar acids were more abundant in the hydrated state. These polyols likely decelerate the rate of water loss during the drying process as well as slow water absorption during rehydration, stabilize proteins, and scavenge reactive oxygen species （ROS）. In contrast, nitrogen-rich and y-glutamyl amino acids, citrulline, and nucleotide catabolism products （e.g. allantoin） were more abundant in the dry states, suggesting that these compounds might play important roles in nitrogen remobilization during rehydration or in ROS scavenging. UV-protective compounds such as 3-（3-hydroxyphenyl）propionate, apigenin, and naringenin, were more abundant in the dry states. Most lipids were produced constitutively, with the exception of choline phosphate, which was more abundant in dry states and likely plays a role in membrane hydration and stabilization. using real world data to assess cardiovascular outcomes of two antidiabetic treatment classes

AIM To evaluate the effect on cardiovascular outcomes of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2(SGLT2) inhibitors in a real world setting by analyzing electronic medical *** We used Tri Net X, a global federated research network providing statistics on electronic health records(EHR). The analytics subset contained EHR from approximately 38 Million patients in 35 Health Care Organizations in the United States. The records of 46,909 patients who had taken SGLT2 inhibitors were compared to 189,120 patients with dipeptidyl peptidase(DPP) 4 inhibitors. We identified five potential confounding factors and built respective strata: elderly, hypertension, chronic kidney disease(CKD), and co-medication with either insulin or metformin. Cardiovascular events were countedas stroke(ICD10 code: I63) or myocardial infarction(ICD10: I21) occurring within three years after the first instance of the respective medication in the patients' *** Of the 46909 patients with SGLT2 inhibitors in their EHR, 1667 patients(3.6%) had an ICD code for stroke or for myocardial infarction within the first three years after the first instance of the medication. In the control group, there were 10680 events of 189120 patients(5.6%), which represents a risk ratio of 0.63(95%CI: 0.60-0.66). The overall incidence of stroke or myocardial infarction in the strata with a potential confounding risk factor reached from 4.9% in patients taking metformin to 12.5% in the stratum with the highest risk(concomitant CKD). In all strata, the difference in risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event was similarly in favor of SGLT2 vs control, with Risk Ratio ranging from 0.62 to *** Real world data replicated the results from randomized clinical trials, confirmed the cardiovascular advantages of SGLT2 inhibitors, and showed its applicability to the us population.

The Cretaceous/Paleogene （K/Pg） Working Group, after many years of studies, voted to define the global Stratotype Section and Point （GSSP） for the base of the Danian Stage at the base of the boundary clay at a section near El Kef Tunisia. The GSSP was approved by the International Commission on Stratigraphy （ICS） and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences （IUGS） in 1991. Nevertheless, the GSSP was not officially published, although some papers dealing with geological aspects of the K/Pg boundary at El Kef have been published and this is quite well known. In April 2006, the GSSP was revisited, a marker was put in place and protection of the site was requested. Many correlation criteria are present at the GSSP of which the most useful are the meteorite impact evidence （iridium anomaly, Ni-rich spinel, etc.） and the mass extinction of planktic micro- and nannofossils. This event coincides with the GSSP, allowing us to propose that the K/Pg boundary is marked exactly by the moment of the meteorite impact, which implies that all the sediments generated by the impact belong to the Danian. This definition solves problems of correlation in the Yucatan peninsula （Mexico） and its surroundings.

Parallel phase 1 clinical trials in the us and in China:accelerating the test of avitinib in lung cancer as a novel inhibitor selectively targeting mutated EGFR and overcoming T790M-induced resistance

Avitinib,a new generation inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR),was approved for clinical trial in both China and the United States,and the phase 1 trials were initiated in both countries in *** the preclinical studies,avitinib showed three novel features including(1)irreversibly binding EGFR by forming a covalent bound with Cys797 in the ATP-binding pocket,(2) sparing wild-type EGFR,and(3)overcoming T790M-induced *** is the first China-developed novel EGFR inhibitor that has entered in global clinical trials,and will provide a precision targeted therapy for non-small cell lung cancer patients.

In 2013, World-Universe Model (WUM) made one of the most important predictions: “Macroobjects of the World have cores made up of the discussed DM (Dark Matter) particles. Other particles, including DM and baryonic matter, form shells surrounding the cores” [1]. Prof. R. Genzel and A. Ghez confirmed this prediction: “The Discovery of a Supermassive Compact Object at the Centre of Our Galaxy” (Nobel Prize in Physics 2020). On May 12, 2022, astronomers, using the Event Horizon Telescope, released the first image of the accretion disk around the Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) produced using a worldwide network of radio observatories made in April 2017. These observations were obtained by a global array of millimeter wavelength telescopes and analyzed by an international research team that now numbers over 300 people, which claimed that Sgr A* is a Supermassive Black Hole (SBH). In the present paper, we analyze these results in frames of WUM. Based on the totality of all accumulated experimental results for the Center of the Milky Way Galaxy we conclude that Sgr A* is the DM Core of our Galaxy.

We analyze the classical penalty algorithm for nonlinear programming in Hilbert spaces and obtain global convergence results, as well as asymptotic superlinear convergence order. These convergence results generalize similar results obtained for finite-dimensional problems. Moreover, the nature of the algorithms allows us to solve the unconstrained subproblems in finite-dimensional spaces.

Bridging the us and China together to conquer cancer: report of the 4th annual meeting of the us Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (usCACA)

A global collaborative effort is pivotal to conquer cancer. Themed "Emerging role of China in global clinical development of novel anti-cancer drugs", the us Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (usCACA) held its 4th annual meeting in Chicago on June 2, 2012, in conjunction with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting to further bridge the us and China together to outsmart cancer. Although a young organization, usCACA has made significant contributions to this goal in the 3 years since its inception through extensive collaboration with academic organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and governmental agencies. usCACA has engaged various stakeholders in developing translational and personalized medical strategies to facilitate new anti-cancer drug development and clinical trials in China. usCACA has initiated and implemented the usCACA-National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) scholarship to encourage overseas returnees to continue cancer research in China. usCACA announced the Hengrui-usCACA scholarship to fund clinical trial staff from China to conduct the observation of early oncologic clinical trials in the us. During the annual meeting, distinguished panelists and the audience discussed the following critical topics:(1) oncologic translational research and early development capabilities in China;(2) novel chemical entity development and partnership with Chinese companies; and (3) Chinese participation in global anti-cancer drug development. usCACA will continue to promote collaborations among cancer researchers and clinicians in the us and China by engaging in more frequent communications and joint efforts across fields, disciplines, and countries, diligently working together toward curing and eliminating cancers.
