Sishengtang decoction in alleviation of toxic and side effects of transarterial embolization

AIM To observe the therapeutic effects of Sishengtang decoction in alleviating the toxic and side effects of transarterial embolization (TAE). METHODS Fifty four patients with liver cancer were divided randomly into Sishengtang decoction group (34 cases) and control group (20 cases). The changes of clinical symptoms and peripheral hemogram and some cellular immune functions were observed before and two weeks after TAE. RESULTS Sishengtang decoction was superior to the control group in improving the digestive tract reaction. The leucocytes of peripheral blood and cellular immune functions (activities of NK cells and LAK cells) of control group decreased obviously after TAE, while that of Sishengtang decoction group decreased slightly, without obvious difference as compared with that of preoperation. CONCLUSIONS Sishengtang decoction might improve the clinical symptoms and increase the leucocytes of peripheral blood and the cellular immune functions of TAE patients.

Background This research aims at identifying relative interventions on trachoma and testing the effectiveness of control measures adopted by assessing its prevalence and related risk factors in Shandong province of China. Methods Trachoma rapid assessment （TRA） was conducted in 6 sub-districts selected from Shandong province based on primary high risk assessment. Active trachoma in children aged 1-9 years and environmental risk factors of trachoma （unclean faces, absence of running water, and absence of flush toilets） were assessed （TRA 1）. Control measures were taken in endemic areas. A second TRA （TRA 2） was conducted after 12 months in the same 6 districts and findings of the two TRAs were compared. Results In TRA 1, we found trachoma in 3 sub-districts and the detection rate was 4% （95% CI： 0.39%-11.12%）, 6% （95% CI： 1.18%-14.17%）, and 6% （95% CI： 1.18%-14.17%） respectively. We could not find trachoma cases in TRA 2. Research data supports that children living with environmental risk factors face an increased risk to active trachoma. However, we could not find statistical evidence for this association, which may be caused by the limited data on prevalence. Conclusions This research indicates that the TRA methodology is easy to assess trachoma and its related risk factors. Based on the results of this study, we have already achieved the goal of ＂elimination of trachoma＂ in Shandong province, as the detection rate of trachomatous infiamation follicular/trachomatous inflammation intense in 1-9-year-old children was less than 5%. Two homogeneous new peptidoglycans were obtained from Lycium barbarum L. Theywere found to be effective ingredients capable of resining lipid peroxidation. The componentsand linkages of the two homogeneous polysaccharides were studied by means of complete acidhydrolysis, periodate oxidation. Smith degradation enzyme hydrolysis, IR, GC and aminoacid analysis. Homogeneous polysaccharide LBPC2 was found to be a β(1→4)(1→6) peptidoglycanwith MW of 1.2×104, composed of Xyl, Rha. Man in a molar ratio of8.8:2.3;1, LBPC4 was foundto be a a(1→4)(1→6) peptidoglycan with MW of 1.0×104, composed of glucans.

Nerve cell metabolism in post brain ischemia depends on increased microcirculation perfusion and transport function of microvascular endothelial cells. In the present study, a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion was established to investigate the influence of electroacupuncture （EA） on hippocampal CA1 cerebral blood flow and glucose transporter 1 （GLUT1） expression in the microvascular endothelial cells. Following EA at Neiguan （PC 6）, the cerebral blood flow in the ischemic hippocampal CA1 region was significantly elevated, the number and microvascular integrated absorbance of the GLUTl-positive cells were significantly increased, nerve cell damage was ameliorated, and GLUT1 protein expression in the ischemic hippocampus was significantly increased. Results demonstrate that EA increased the cerebral blood flow of the hippocampal CA1 region and improved the glucose transport function, thereby attenuating neuronal injuries.

AIM:To study the differential expression of proteins between natural taurine treated hepatic stellate cells and controls, and investigate the underlying regulatory mechanism of natural taurine in inhibiting hepatic ***: A proteomic strategy combining two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and ultraperform ance liquid chromatographyelectrospray ionizationtandem mass spectrometry (UPLCESIMS/MS) was used to study the differential expression of proteins and Western blotting was used to validate the results. Gene ontology (GO) method was utilized to analyze the functional enrichment of differentially expressed proteins. Flow cytometry was performed to compare the apoptosis rate between taurinetreated and untreated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs).RESULTS: Nineteen differentially expressed proteins (11 upregulated and 8 downregulated) were identifiedby 2D/MS, and the expression profiles of GLO1 and ANXA1 were validated by Western blotting. GO analysis found that these differentially expressed proteins were enriched within biological processes such as "cellular apoptosis", "oxidation reaction" and "metabolic process" in clusters. Flow cytometric analysis showed that taurinetreated HSCs had a significantly increased apoptosis rate when compared with the control ***: Natural taurine can promote HSC apoptosis so as to inhibit hepatic fibrosis.

Experiments were performed on 13 Wister rats. Fastblus (FB) was injected into subcutaneous tissue in perineum area and nuclear yellow (NY) was injected into subserous lamina of the bladder wall, respectively. FB, NY and FB+NY were mostly found in the spinal ganglions of L6, S1 ans S2 segments. The numbers of FB,NY and FB+NY labeled cells were 146, 186 and 81, in a total of 463 labeled cells and their proportion was 40%, 51% and 9%, respectively. The result indicates that the spinal ganglion neurons dually innervate both the somatic and visceral tissues, and the convergence of somato_visceral sensory pathways might occur in the spinal ganglion cells.
