Major Factors Affecting the Distribution of Anuran Communities in the Urban, Suburban and Rural Areas of shanghai, China

There is a dearth of information on the effects of landscape and microhabitat variables on the distribution of anurans in areas of rapid urban development, in both tropical and subtropical regions. Therefore, we studied 24 Wetlands sites from the center of shanghai city, China extending outward to rural areas. Sampling was performed from May through July 2014. Urbanization was categorized by the proportion of hard ground cover. Transect sampling and ＇calling＇ surveys were used to investigated the richness and density of anurans; microhabitat factors were recorded simultaneously. One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis tests were conducted to analyze differences of total density, species richness and density of individual anuran species in the three urbanization levels; redundancy analysis was carried out on the relationship between anuran density and environmental variables. Species richness was lowest in the areas where the proportion of hard ground cover was 〉 80%, and the total density of anurans was highest in the areas where coverage of the hard ground cover was 〈 30%. We recorded five species belonging to four genera and four families and an individual anuran species that had varied representations in urban environments. Beijing gold-striped pond frogs （Pelophylax plancyi） and Zhoushan toads （Bufo gargarizans） appeared to be well adapted to the shanghai metropolis. Large water environments and aquatic vegetation （floating-leaves and emergent vegetation） were indicators of the presence of Beijing gold-striped pond frogs. The density of black-spotted pond frog （Pelophylax nigromaculatus） was at the lowest density in the areas where hard ground coverage was 〉 80%, and tended to prefer larger bodies of water. Hong Kong rice-paddy frogs （Fejervarya multistriata） and ornamented pygmy frogs （Microhyla achatina） both suffered severely from cropland loss due to urban development. A New Record of Kaloula(Amphibia: Anura: Microhylidae) in shanghai, China

We discovered a medium-sized species of narrow-mouthed frog of the genus Kaloula in June and September 2014 during municipal surveys of amphibians in shanghai. Three narrow-mouthed frogs were collected in city drains of the Binjiang Forest Park, shanghai. Based on subsequent examination and morphological characters, these specimens were identified as Kaloula borealis（Barbour, 1908）. The species was mainly distributed in Northern China and Korea. It is a new amphibian record for shanghai. We found the visible differences in male secondary sexual characteristics between our specimens and Beijing specimens. K. borealis was first described inhabiting urban greenlands which could benefit amphibian conservation in urban and urbanizing areas.

The Impacts of Urbanization on the Distribution and Body Condition of the Rice-paddy Frog(Fejervarya multistriata) and Gold-striped Pond Frog(Pelophylax plancyi) in shanghai,China

Previous studies have suggested that urbanization presents a major threat to anuran populations. However, very few studies have looked at the relationship between urbanization and anuran body condition. We investigated whether the distribution and body condition of the rice-paddy frog（Fejervarya multistriata） and gold-striped pond frog（Pelophylax plancyi） are influenced by increasing urbanization in shanghai, China. Four study sites with six indicators of the major land-cover types were scored to indicate their position on an urbanization gradient. We found that both the density and body condition of F. multistriata declined significantly along this gradient. Although we observed a significant difference in body condition of P. plancyi among study sites with different degrees of urbanization, we did not find any corresponding significant differences in population density. Our results indicate that both the densities and body condition of these two anuran species show a negative relationship with increasing urbanization, but that the density of P. plancyi was only slightly affected in shanghai.

Morphological study of floral nectaries in Euonymus and the probable origin of the echinate fruit surface

A conspicuous nectary disk is common but has a distinguishing morphology in the cosmopolitan genus Euonymus. Our study focuses on the morphology of floral nectaries in 21 representatives of Euonymus and Glyptopetalum. Two main types of nectaries were documented: a mix of inter-and extrastaminal nectaries existed between the corolla and the stigma, while the intrastaminal nectaries were distributed between the stigma and the stamen bases. The main route of nectar release in Euonymus is via modified stomata, and different nectarostomata locations were observed: in depressions, slightly raised above the epidermal surface or at the same level as the epidermis. Floral nectaries in E. sect. Echinococcus species developed into the protrusions on the fruit surface at the later stage. The development of nectaries not only explained the mystery of the origin of the echinate fruit surface, but also showed that differences in fruit surface might be inappropriate for use in infrageneric classification. These discoveries inform morphological observations of floral nectaries in Euonymus.

Twenty years of Chinese vascular plant novelties,2000 through 2019

From 2000 to 2019,11,895 new names or new additions to the Chinese vascular flora were proposed by 4226 individuals(4086 articles and 140 books),as documented in the Chinese Plant Names Index(CPNI).During those 20 years,4407 new taxa of vascular plants were described from China,including 7 new families,132 new genera,3543 new species,68 new subspecies,497 new varieties and 160 new ***,3562 new combinations and names at new rank and 306 new replacement names were also *** these various new names were 150 invalid names and 108 illegitimate names,including some that have not been *** hundred and forty three vascular plants were reported as new to China,while 2349 names were reduced to synonyms of 1406 *** data show that the Chinese flora increased in size at the rate of about 200 taxa annually during those *** the increased attention given to biodiversity in recent years,the evidence indicates that a large number of species in China have yet to be *** basic investigation of the Chinese flora is ***,in the past two decades only 8.5%of the newly published species have been based on molecular evidence,but in the past five years such data have increased significantly,reaching about 20%.Molecular data will undoubtedly become increasingly significant in the discovery of new species in the coming ***,Guangxi,Sichuan,Xizang and Taiwan were important sources of new discoveries,with more than 3300 new taxa and records from these five *** area,Taiwan and Hainan,two islands in southern China,have the highest density of newly discovered *** plant surveys are still needed,especially in areas in the southwest and on the southern islands.

Changes in wintering Hooded Cranes and their habitats at Chongming Dongtan over the past 20 years

Determining the migration routes and connections of migratory birds at the population level helps clarify intraspecific differences in *** subspecies have been recognized in the Whimbrel(Numenius phaeopus)in *** is the most recently described *** breeds in Central Siberia,while its non-breeding region and migration routes are still *** tracked the migration of Eurasian Whimbrels captured at three non-breeding sites(Moreton Bay in east coast of Australia,Roebuck Bay in Northwest Australia and Sungei Buloh Wetland in Singapore)and two migration stopover sites(Chongming Dongtan and Mai Po Wetland in China).We determined the breeding sites and inferred the subspecies of the tagged birds in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway(EAAF)based on the known breeding distribution of each *** the 30 tagged birds,6 and 21 birds bred in the breeding range of *** and variegatus,respectively;one bred in the presumed transition area between the breeding range of *** and rogachevae,and two bred in the region between the breeding range of *** and *** birds that bred in the *** breeding range spent their non-breeding season in the northern Sumatra,Singapore,East Java and Northwest Australia and mainly stopped over along China's coasts during *** of our birds bred in the exclusive breeding range of the phaeopus *** studies have predicted that rogachevae whimbrels migrate along the Central Asian Flyway and spend the non-breeding season in West India and East *** found that at least some rogachevae whimbrels migrate along the EAAF and spend the non-breeding season in Southeast Asia and *** *** is at best sparsely distributed in the EAAF in the west region,or possibly does not occur at all.
