Gradient sparsification for efficient wireless federated learning with differential privacy

Federated learning(FL) enables distributed clients to collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing raw data with each other. However, it suffers from the leakage of private information from uploading models. In addition, as the model size grows, the training latency increases due to the limited transmission bandwidth and model performance degradation while using differential privacy(DP)protection. In this paper, we propose a gradient sparsification empowered FL framework with DP over wireless channels, to improve training efficiency without sacrificing convergence performance. Specifically, we first design a random sparsification algorithm to retain a fraction of the gradient elements in each client’s local model, thereby mitigating the performance degradation induced by DP and reducing the number of transmission parameters over wireless channels. Then, we analyze the convergence bound of the proposed algorithm, by modeling a non-convex FL problem. Next, we formulate a time-sequential stochastic optimization problem for minimizing the developed convergence bound, under the constraints of transmit power, the average transmitting delay, as well as the client’s DP requirement. Utilizing the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework, we develop an analytical solution to the optimization problem. Extensive experiments have been implemented on three real-life datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm. We show that our proposed algorithms can fully exploit the interworking between communication and computation to outperform the baselines, i.e., random scheduling, round robin, and delay-minimization algorithms.

The joint resource block(RB)allocation and power optimization problem is studied to maximize the sum-rate of the vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V)links in the device-to-device(D2D)-enabled V2V communication system,where one feasible cellular user(FCU)can share its RB with multiple V2V *** problem is first formulated as a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP)problem with constraint of the maximum interference power in the FCU *** the game theory,two coalition formation algorithms are proposed to accomplish V2V link partitioning and FCU selection,where the transferable utility functions are introduced to minimize the interference among the V2V links and the FCU links for the optimal RB *** successive convex approximation(SCA)is used to transform the original problem into a convex one and the Lagrangian dual method is further applied to obtain the optimal transmit power of the V2V ***,numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed resource allocation algorithm in terms of the system sum-rate.

In this paper,we design a spatial modulation based orthogonal time frequency space(SMOTFS)system to achieve improved transmission reliability and meet the high transmission rate and highspeed demands of future mobile communications,which fully utilizes the characteristics of spatial modulation(SM)and orthogonal time frequency space(OTFS)*** detailed system design and signal processing of the SM-OTFS system have been *** closed-form expressions of the average symbol error rate(ASER)and average bit error rate(ABER)of the SM-OTFS system have been derived over the delay-Doppler channel with the help of the union bounding technique and moment-generating function(MGF).Meanwhile,the system complexity has been *** results verify the correctness of the theoretical ASER and ABER analysis of the SM-OTFS system in the high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)regions and also show that the SM-OTFS system outperforms the traditional SM based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(SM-OFDM)system with limited complexity increase under mobile conditions,especially in high mobility scenarios.

Pilot reuse and power control of D2D underlaying massive MIMO systems for energy efficiency optimization

It is predicted that there will be billions of machine type communication(MTC) devices to be deployed in near future. This will certainly cause severe access congestion and system overload which is one of the major challenges for the proper operation of 5G networks. Adopting device-to-device(D2D) communications into massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) systems has been considered as a potential solution to alleviate the overload of MTC devices by offloading the MTC traffic onto D2 D links. This work proposes a novel pilot reuse(PR) and power control(PC) for energy efficiency(EE) optimization of the uplink D2 D underlaying massive MIMO cellular systems. Although the use of large scale antenna array at the base station(BS) can eliminate most of the D2D-to-Cellular interference, the Cellular-to-D2 D interference and the channel estimation error caused by PR will remain significant. Motivated by this, and in order to reduce the channel estimation error, in this paper a novel heuristic PR optimum pilot reuse scheme is proposed for D2 D transmitters(D2DTs)selection. By taking into account the interference among users as well as the overall power consumption, the overall system EE is maximized through power optimization while maintaining the quality-of-service(Qo S)provisions for both cellular users(CUEs) and D2 D pairs. The power optimization problem is modeled as a non-cooperative game and, as such, a distributed iterative power control algorithm which optimizes users’ power sequentially is proposed. Various performance evaluation results obtained by means of computer simulations have shown that the proposed PR scheme and PC algorithm can significantly increase the overall system EE.

wireless Channel Parameter Estimation Algorithms: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Temporal and three-dimensional(3 D) spatial information is important for the characterization of wireless channels. In this paper, the commonly used array signal processing(ASP) methods to estimate channel parameters are summarized. Firstly, algorithms that can be used to estimate azimuth angle of arrival(AAo A) and elevation Ao A(EAo A) are introduced. They include multiple signal classification(MUSIC), estimation of signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques(ESPRIT), and Unitary ESPRIT algorithms. Secondly, algorithms that can be used to jointly estimate delay, AAo A, and EAo A are given. They include joint angle and delay estimation(JADE) MUSIC, JADE ESPRIT, shift-invariance(SI) JADE, and space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization(SAGE) algorithms. We also propose an improved SIJADE algorithm to further reduce computation complexity by incorporating with the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm. Performance of the above algorithms to extract only spatial information and to jointly extract temporal and spatial information is compared in both synthetic and 60 GHz real channel environments. Simulation results show that with the inclusion of delay estimation, the joint temporal and spatial estimation algorithms can provide better resolution than algorithms estimating only *** data processing results show that MUSIC algorithm can provide comparable results with SAGE algorithm in estimating AAoA and EAoA. SI-JADE and the improved SI-JADE algorithms are also applicable to process 60 GHz channel measurement ***, MUSIC, SI-JADE, and the improved SI-JADE algorithms can greatly reduce computational burden compared with SAGE algorithm. At last, some future directions are pointed out.

A General Channel Model for Visible Light communications in Underground Mines

In underground mines, visible light communication(VLC) system is a promising method to realize effective communication,which supports communication and illumination at the same time. Therefore, adequate research of underlying physical propagation phenomenon should be carried out to realize VLC system in underground mines. To design VLC system and evaluate its performance, accurate and efficient channel models, including large-scale fading and scattering characteristics, are needed to be established. However,the characteristics of the underlying VLC channels about fading and scattering have not been sufficiently investigated yet. In this paper, a path loss channel model, based on the recursive model, is proposed precisely. Its path loss exponent is determined by three different trajectories, which is studied in the mining roadway and working face environment. Besides, the shadowing effect for VLC has been modelled by a Bimodal Gaussian distribution in underground mines. Considering the number of transmitters in line-of-sight(Lo S) as well as non-line-of-sight(NLo S) scenarios,our simulation illustrates the fact that, as the curve fitting technique is employed, the path loss displays a linear behavior in *** path loss expression is derived, it is related to the distance. Finally, root mean square(RMS) delay spread and Mie scattering in underground mines are analyzed.

A novel 3D GBSM for mm Wave MIMO channels

In this paper, a novel three dimensional(3 D) wideband geometry-based stochastic model(GBSM) for millimeter wave(mm Wave) multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) channels is proposed. A homogeneous Poisson point process(PPP) is used to generate the clusters in 3 D space. The transmitter(Tx) and receiver(Rx) are surrounded by two spheres. The scatterers distributed in the two spheres are introduced to mimic the clustering effects of multipath components(MPCs) in delay and angular *** large-scale path loss model and line-of-sight(LOS) probability model are taken into account to make the channel model realistic. In addition, mm Wave channel measurements are conducted in an indoor environment. Simulation results based on the two-sphere channel model are compared with measurement results and good agreements are achieved, which validates the proposed channel model. The results indicate that the proposed channel model has good adaptivity and can model the mm Wave channel accurately.

3D non-stationary wideband circular tunnel channel models for high-speed train wireless communication systems

This paper proposes three-dimensional(3D) non-stationary wideband circular geometry-based stochastic models(GBSMs) for high-speed train(HST) tunnel scenarios. Considering single-bounced(SB)and multiple-bounced(MB) components from the tunnel’s internal surfaces, a theoretical channel model is first established. Then, the corresponding simulation model is developed using the method of equal volume(MEV)to calculate discrete angular parameters. Based on the proposed 3D GBSMs, important time-variant statistical properties are investigated, such as the temporal autocorrelation function(ACF), spatial cross-correlation function(CCF), and space-Doppler(SD) power spectrum density(PSD). Results indicate that all statistical properties of the simulation model, verified by simulation results, can match well those of the theoretical *** statistical properties of the proposed 3D GBSMs are further validated by relevant measurement data,demonstrating the flexibility and utility of our proposed tunnel GBSMs.

A novel 3D frequency domain SAGE algorithm with applications to parameter estimation in mm Wave massive MIMO indoor channels

Millimeter wave(mm Wave) and massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) wireless communication channels show some new characteristics different from conventional channels. In order to have an in-depth understanding of mm Wave massive MIMO channels, we conduct channel measurements at 16, 28, and 38 GHz frequency bands using virtual large horizontal planar arrays in an indoor office environment. First, a three dimensional(3D) frequency domain(FD) parameter estimation algorithm extended from the space alternating generalized expectation-maximization(SAGE) algorithm is proposed and used to process the measurement ***, by dividing the large array into several sub-arrays and calculating power delay profiles(PDPs), power azimuth angle profiles(PAAPs), and power elevation angle profiles(PEAPs), we analyze the changes of delay,azimuth angle of arrival(AAo A), and elevation Ao A(EAo A) over the large array. We find that the spatial cross-correlation functions(SCCFs) calculated along different directions of the planar array exhibit significant variations. Third, the comparison of the averaged PDPs(APDPs) at three different frequency bands shows that the attenuation increases when mm Wave channels move to high frequency bands. Furthermore, SCCFs of channels at three frequency bands are also compared for two uniform linear arrays(ULAs). We draw conclusion that the correlation coefficients can be affected by not only measurement environments, but also the relative angle between transmitter(Tx) pointing direction and receiver(Rx) large array, and the operating frequency bands.
