Short-term effects of maize residue biochar on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of soil β-glucosidase

Soil β-glucosidase (BG), the rate-limiting enzyme in the final step of cellulose hydrolysis, plays a key role in microbial metabolism, carbon (C) cycling and sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems. Biochar application is known to affect soil BG activity;however, most of the biochar studies have focused on the potential activity of BG, and it is not clear how biochar influences the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of BG in the soil. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of maize residue biochar on soil BG kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Soil BG kinetic (V_(max) and K_(m)) and ther-modynamic (E_(a), ΔH_(a) and Q_(10)) parameters were determined within soils (clayey and sandy loam soils) amended with either maize residue (as positive control) or its biochar (600℃) at 0.5 and 1.0% ratios (w/w), and the mixtures were incubated for 90 days. BG showed an increase in potential enzymatic activity (81%), enzyme concentration (higher V_(max) value) (25%) and substrate affinity (lower K_(m) value) (32%) in the biochar-amended sandy loam soil only at high addition rates compared with the control, and an increase by about 86% of the catalytic efficiency (V_(max)/K_(m)). In the clayey soil, biochar addition decreased potential BG activity (by 10-29%), increased the V_(max) value (by 20-25%) and had no impact on enzyme-substrate binding affinity, but still increased the catalytic efficiency by 47-72%. Adsorption of soil BG by biochar particles did not affect the catalytic efficiency in the soil. Generally, application of maize residue biochar to the soil decreased the E_(a), ΔH_(a) and Q_(10) values of BG compared with the negative controls at both biochar rates in the light-textured soil and only at low biochar rate in heavy-textured soil. In this paper,we present a path-following infeasible interior-point method for P∗(κ)horizontal linear complementarity problems(P∗(κ)-HLCPs).The algorithm is based on a simple kernel function for finding the search directions and defining the neighborhood of the central *** algorithm follows the central path related to some perturbations of the original problem,using the so-called feasibility and centering steps,along with only full such ***,it has the advantage that the calculation of the step sizes at each iteration is *** complexity result shows that the full-Newton step infeasible interior-point algorithm based on the simple kernel function enjoys the best-known iteration complexity for P∗(κ)-HLCPs.

Early differentiation in biomass production and carbon sequestration of white poplar and its two hybrids in Central Iran

We assessed the potential of white poplar（Populus alba L.） and its inter-sectional hybridization with euphrates poplar（P. euphratica Oliv.） for carbon storage and sequestration in central Iran. Trials were established at planting density of 2,500 trees per hectare in block randomized design with three replicates. After 6 years, we measured the above-ground biomass of tree components（trunk, branch, bark, twig and leaf）, and assessed soil carbon at three depths. P. alba 9 euphratica plantation stored significantly more carbon（22.3 t ha-1） than P. alba（16.7 t ha-1） and P. euphratica 9 alba（13.1 t ha-1）.Most of the carbon was accumulated in the above-ground biomass（61.1 % in P. alba, 72.4 % in P. alba 9 euphratica and 56.0 % in P. euphratica 9 alba）. There was no significant difference in soil carbon storage. Also, biomass allocation was different between white poplar P. alba and its inter-sectional hybridization. Therefore, there was a yield difference due to genomic imprinting, which increased the possibility that paternally and maternally inherited wood production alleles would be differentially expressed in the new crossing.

Design and manufacture of emulsion liquid membrane based on various amine extractants for separation and extraction of succinic acid from fermentation broth

The aim of this study was to design a new emulsion liquid membrane(ELM)system for the separation of succinic acid from aqueous *** concentration of succinic acid varied from 20 to 60 mmol·L^(-1).The prepared ELM system includes tributylamine(TBA)as a carrier,commercial kerosene as a solvent,Span 80 as a surfactant,and Na2CO3as a stripping *** order to control the membrane swelling,different values of cyclohexanone were added to the membrane *** effect of various empirical variables on the extraction of the succinic acid such as acid concentration in the feed solution,initial feed concentration,carrier concentration,the stirring speed of the extraction,Na2CO3,surfactant,and cyclohexanone concentrations,and treat ratio in the ELM *** best result was obtained when TBA was used as the *** final acid extraction efficiency was independent of pH variations of the aqueous feed *** extraction of succinic acid solution with a concentration of 40 mmol·L^(-1)was improved by increasing the treat ratio 1:7-1:3,stripping phase concentration 0.5-1.5 mol·L^(-1),stirring speed 300-500 r·min^(-1)and cyclohexanone concentration in the membrane phase 1.2-1.6 mol·L^(-1).No considerable effect on the extraction rate was observed for the carrier concentration in the membrane ***,the surfactant concentration in the feed phase showed a dual effect on the extraction efficiency.

Length-weight relationships for six freshwater fish species in Iran

The aim of this study is to report the length-weight relationship parameters （a and b） for some economically important fish species from Iranian freshwaters. The length-weight relationships （LWR） are calculated for six freshwater fish species collected during 2006 and 2007 in Iran. The values of the exponent b in the LWR （W=aL^b） vary between 2.985 and 3.543. The LWR with high correlation coefficient （r^2） is significant for all the species. These parameters axe of great importance to evaluate the relative condition of populations, biology, species management and their fisheries and stock assessment. The application of the length-weight relationships presented here should be limited to the observed length ranges.

Sinkholes and cavities can represent serious hazards to human safety and urban infrastructures,cause roadbed subsidence,and so *** is therefore essential to evaluate various sinkholes in different depths and sizes to assess the risk of *** paper evaluates the effect of different cavities on Rayleigh-wave propagation and body(P)wave ***(R)wave propagation is analyzed according to the classical multi-channel analysis of surface waves(MASW)method also considering the R-wave *** seismic traces are computed by means of finite element modeling(FEM)for cavity and intrusion at different depths and ***,field acquisition data is used to verify the detection effect of a cavity on R-and *** results show that the presence of backscattered R-waves and the changes in the R-wave velocity spectrum can help in cavity *** possible evidence is represented by significant changes in the refraction travel times over the cavity *** can be concluded that the field data are in good agreement with the synthetic,and it could be effective to consider the results of both R-and P-wave analysis in order to efficiently identify the cavities.

Infestation and pathological lesions of some lymph nodes induced by Linguatula serrata nymphs in sheep slaughtered in shahrekord Area(Southwest Iran)

Objective: To determine the infection rates of mesenteric and mediastinal lymph nodes in relation to Linguatula serrata(L. serrata) nymphs. Methods: In the present study, mesenteric and mediastinal lymph nodes of 200 sheep with different sex and age that were slaughtered in a shahrekord slaughterhouse were collected. The lymph nodes were examined macroscopically and for histopathological examination, tissue samples were taken from the gross lesions processed routinely by paraffin method and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Results: Out of 200 examined sheep, the mesenteric lymph nodes in 18 sheep(9%) and the mediastinal lymph nodes of 9 sheep(4.5%) were infected by L. serrata nymphs. The infection rate increased with age, but no significant difference was observed between males and females or the two types of lymph nodes(P > 0.01). Different nonspecific gross and macroscopic lesions were seen in infected lymph nodes. L. serrata nymph sections were observed in some histopathological slides. Conclusions: It is concluded that the sheep may play an important role in linguatulosis of final hosts and human beings in this region.

Evolutionary algorithm for optimization of multilayer coatings

In this paper, a new evolutionary algorithm, the well-known imperialist competition algorithm, is proposed for optimizing the optical thin-films. In this method, the process is modeled of the competition between countries as imperialists and their colonizing of others as colonies. This algorithm could be an appropriate alternative to some of the more popular algorithms for optimizing the optical thin-films for good performance. The polarizer and edge filter for example are designed by using the imperialist competition algorithm method and the results are compared with those from two optimization high-performance methods： the genetic algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. Based on these results,the performance of the imperialist competition algorithm method shows that this algorithm is not sensitive to the change of its parameters and it can be an important advantage for quickly achieving a global optimal point. On the other hand the results show a better ratio of P-polarization transmittance to S-polarization transmittance in the design of a 1540-nm polarizer, which is more appropriate than the results from the other two methods. In the second design, an edge filter with a lower number of layers and more uniform bandpass spectrum than the counterparts of those methods is obtained. These results indicate that the imperialist competition algorithm is a robust method for optical thin-film designs.
