On the Generic Taxonomy of Opisthotropis balteata(Cope, 1895)(Squamata: Colubridae: Natricinae): Taxonomic Revision of Two Natricine Genera

The single prefrontal configuration has historically been used as an important diagnostic character for many natricine taxa. For example, the genus Trimerodytes Cope, 1895 was long been regarded as a junior synonym of Opisthotropis Günther, 1872 for their similar prefrontal configurations and the type species, T. balteatus Cope, 1895, has been assigned to the genus Opisthotropis. However, as the number and arrangement of prefrontal vary frequently both at species and generic level, it is questionable whether the synonymization of Trimerodytes reflects their evolutionary relationships. On the basis of recently collected specimens of O. balteata, the generic status of the species was assessed using both molecular and morphological data. Opisthotropis was recovered as polyphyletic with reference to O. balteata, because O. balteata is nested within the genus Sinonatrix Rossman and Eberle, 1977 and is the sister species of the type species of Sinonatrix. Consequently, we herein resurrect the long-overlooked synonym Trimerodytes from Opisthotropis and synonymize the junior generic nomen Sinonatrix with Trimerodytes. In addition, based on morphological similarities between the monotypic genus Paratapinophis Angel, 1929 and Trimerodytes, we doubt about the validity of Paratapinophis. Following taxonomic changes in this work, the taxonomic account of the genus Trimerodytes, updated descriptions of its type species, and diagnostic key to Trimerodytes species are provided.

We present an annotated checklist for a total 241 reptiles and 22 amphibians including 5 frogs, 9 toads, 7 newts and salamanders, 1 crocodile, 1 worm lizard, 148 lizards, 79 snakes and 12 turtles and tortoises, includes the most scientific literature up to August 2014 and also based on several field surveys conducted in different Provinces of Iran from 2009 to 2014. We present an up-to-dated checklist of reptiles and amphibians in Iran. We provide a comprehensive listing of taxonomy, names, distribution and conservation status of all amphibians and reptiles of Iran. This checklist includes all recognized named taxa, English names for classes, orders, families, species, subspecies along with Persian names for species, including indication of native and introduced species. For the first time we report two non-native introduced reptiles from natural habitats of Iran. Of the total 22 species of amphibians in Iran, 6（27.2%） are endemic and of the total 241 species of reptiles, 55（22.8%） are endemic. Of the 22 amphibians species in Iran, 3（13%） are Critically Endangered, 2（9%） are Vulnerable and of the 241 reptile species 3（1.2%） are Critically Endangered, 4（1.6%） are Endangered and 10（4.1%） are Vulnerable. Accordingly, this paper combines significant aspects of taxonomy, common names, conservation status and distribution of the Iranian herpetofauna.

Mating behavior and parturition are important components in the life history of any species. The endangered Chinese crocodile lizard(Shinisaurus crocodilurus) is suffering dramatic population decreases in the wild. Successful captive breeding can provide individuals to be reintroduced into their natural habitat and help to restore the wild populations. Studying the mating behavior and parturition of these lizards in captivity will enable us understand how is this ancient species reproduction and optimize artificial reproduction protocol. We studied the mating behavior and parturition of Chinese crocodile lizards in captivity using video recordings at the Daguishan National nature Reserve, China, from 2015 to 2017. We analyzed pre-copulation and copulation, which occurred in mid-March to late May from all studied years. Pre-copulation and copulation lasted on average 7.51(n=11) and 27.45(n=11) minutes, respectively. We found that large-bodied male lizards have longer copulation periods, a pattern seen in other lizard species. In the mating event, males always initiated sex, while the females were passive. The duration of parturition lasted 153.8 ± 26.8(n=46) minutes, and larger females had heavier clutches. In addition, even though Chinese crocodile lizards represent an ancient lizard clade with primitive characteristics, they still abide by the reproduction patterns seen in most other lizard species.

A network meta-analysis on comparison of invasive and non-invasive sampling methods to characterize intestinal microbiota of birds

Birds maintain complex and intimate associations with a diverse community of microbes in their *** invasive and non-invasive sampling methods are used to characterize these communities to answer a multitude of eco-evolutionary questions related to host-gut microbiome ***,the comparability of these invasive and non-invasive sampling methods is sparse with contradicting *** performing a network meta-analysis for 13 published bird gut microbiome studies,here we attempt to investigate the comparability of these invasive and non-invasive sampling *** two most used non-invasive sampling methods(cloacal swabs and fecal samples)showed significantly different results in alpha diversity and taxonomic relative abundances compared to invasive ***,non-invasive samples showed decreased alpha diversity compared to intestinal samples,but the alpha diversities of fecal samples were more comparable to the intestinal *** the contrary,the cloacal swabs characterized significantly lower alpha diversities than in intestinal samples,but the taxonomic relative abundances acquired from cloacal swabs were similar to the intestinal *** status,diet,and domestication degree of host birds also influenced the differences in microbiota characterization between invasive and non-invasive *** results indicate a general pattern in microbiota differences among intestinal mucosal and non-invasive samples across multiple bird taxa,while highlighting the importance of evaluating the appropriateness of the microbiome sampling methods used to answer specific research *** overall results also suggest the potential importance of using both fecal and cloacal swab sampling together to properly characterize bird microbiomes.

生物多样性与生态系统功能之间的关系已成为森林生态系统研究的核心问题。然而,在具有不同人类干扰历史的亚热带森林群落中,关于环境因子对生物多样性与生态系统功能关系影响的研究仍然较少。在本研究中,选择位于中国东部浙江省的34个亚热带森林样地,在考虑样方中的环境因子的基础上,利用线性模型,分析样地中木本植物多样性(物种、功能和谱系多样性)与样方内木本植物生物量或生物量变化量之间的关系。物种多样性和功能多样性,并非谱系多样性,与生物量和生物量的变化量之间存在显着相关性。生物量或生物量变化量与年平均温度和海拔高度之间存在显著的正相关关系。此外,在考虑环境因子和森林群落的演替阶段时,生物量变化量与功能多样性的关系显著强于生物量变化量与谱系多样性或物种多样性之间的关系。这些研究结果表明,生物多样性与生态系统功能之间的关系可能取决于生物多样性指数的选择和环境条件。

A new genus and three new species of miniaturized microhylid frogs from Indochina(Amphibia: Anura:Microhylidae: Asterophryinae)

We report on the discovery of a new genus of microhylid subfamily Asterophryinae from northern and eastern Indochina, containing three new *** Gen. nov. are secretive miniaturized frogs(SVL<21 mm) with a mostly semi-fossorial lifestyle. To assess phylogenetic relationships, we studied 12 S rRNA – 16 S rRNA mt DNA fragments with a final alignment of 2 591 bp for 53 microhylid species. Morphological and osteological characters were analyzed using micro-CT scanning and used to describe the new genus. Results of phylogenetic analyses assigned the new genus into the mainly Australasian subfamily Asterophryinae as a sister taxon to the genus Siamophryne from southern Indochina. The three specimens collected from Gia Lai Province in central Vietnam, Cao Bang Province in northern Vietnam, and Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand proved to be separate species, different both in morphology and genetics(genetic divergence 3.1%≤P≤5.1%). Our work provides further evidence for the "out of Indo-Eurasia"scenario for Asterophryinae, indicating that the initial cladogenesis and differentiation of this group of frogs occurred in the Indochina Peninsula. To date, each of the three new species of Vietnamophryne Gen. nov. is known only from a single specimen; thus,their distribution, life history, and conservation status require further study.

A new species of the genus Leptolalax (Anura： Megophryidae) from southern Vietnam

We describe a new species of megophryid frog from Phu Yen Province in southern Vietnam. Leptolalax macrops sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological attributes：（1） body size medium （SVL 28.0-29.3 mm in three adult males, 30.3 mm in single adult female）; （2） supra-axillary glands present, creamy white; ventrolateral glands indistinct; （3） tympanum externally distinct; （4） dorsal skin roughly granular with larger tubercles, dermal ridges on dorsum absent; （5） rudimentary webbing present between fingers I-II and I1-111; rudimentary webbing between all toes; fingers and toes without dermal fringes; （6） in life ventral surface greyish-violet with white speckling; （7） supratympanic fold distinct, dark brown in life; （8） iris bicolored, typically golden in upper half, fading to golden green in lower half; （9） tibia short （TbL/SVL 0.44-0.45 in males）; and （10） eyes large and protuberant （ED/SVL 0.15-0.16 in males） From all congeners for which comparable sequences are available, the new species differs markedly in the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene sequence （P-distance〉5.7%）. The new species is currently known only from montane evergreen tropical forests of Song Hinh District, Phu Yen Province, and M＇Drak District of Dak Lak Province at elevations of 470-630 m a.s.l.. We suggest the new species should be considered as Data Deficient following the IUCN＇s Red List categories. We also report a previously unknownLeptolalax mtDNA lineage from an evergreen tropica forest in the Hoa Thinh District of Phu Yen Province which may also represent an undescribed species.

Correlating rodent community structure with ecological integrity, Tussen-die-Riviere nature Reserve, Free State province, South Africa

Rodents form a vital component of Free State ecosystems and monitoring them may be a relatively quick andinexpensive method of indicating healthy or unhealthy ecosystem functioning. Using removal trapping, we havestudied rodent seasonal abundance, species richness, Shannon diversity, and evenness of rodents in four habitats inthe Tussen-die-Riviere nature Reserve, inspected the most successful sampling method for these habitats, andreport on their community structure and how it is related to an Ecological Index (≈ EI value of grassland). Bothspecies richness and Shannon diversity increased significantly with EI value. The indicator species Mastomyscoucha occurred at all plots, but contributed the largest proportion of the total captures (ca. 80%) at the plot withlowest EI value. Other results important for small mammal monitoring and collecting are that trap success andspecies richness was highest in autumn. This study also confirms that four days and nights continuous trapping isessential for the effective sampling of rodent communities in Free State grasslands. Our results partially supportexpectations that the number of specialist species increases with succession, M. coucha dominance acts as anindicator of habitat disturbance, rodent species richness conforms to Tilman’s hump-shaped curve model, and addsto a baseline of diversity indices in a variety of grassland habitats.

Epiphytic orchids exhibit varying degrees of phorophyte tree *** orchid species show a strong phorophyte preference,while other species associate with a broad range of tree *** trees that carry epiphytic orchids play a crucial role in orchid life cycle,little is known about this phorophyte-epiphyte *** performed a pilot study to investigate why epiphytic orchids prefer or avoid certain *** question becomes more puzzling when the preferred trees differ among epiphytes that seem to mutually exclude each other,within the same *** this reason,we selected two orchid species,Panisea uniflora and Bulbophyllum odoratissimum co-occurring in a forest habitat in southern China,where they showed a specific association with Quercus yiwuensis and Pistacia weinmannifolia trees,*** analysed a number of environmental factors potentially influencing the relationship between orchids and trees,including bark and orchid root fungal *** in bark features,such as water holding capacity and pH were recorded between *** and ***,which could influence both orchid seed germination and fungal diversity on the two *** and molecular culture-based methods,combined with metabarcoding analyses,were used to assess fungal communities associated with studied orchids and trees.A total of 162 fungal species in 74 genera were isolated from bark *** two genera,Acremonium and Verticillium,were shared by the two phorophyte *** analysis confirmed the presence of significantly different fungal communities on the investigated tree and orchid species,with considerable similarity between each orchid species and its host tree,suggesting that the orchid-host tree association is influenced by the fungal communities of the host tree bark.

Characteristics of aggregated chondrules and reclassification of Boxian meteorites

CHONDRULES are the major constituent of chondrites, but the nature of their origin remains elusive. Models based on nebular settings have attracted much support since Wood suggested that they formed there ascondensates. Subsequently, the melting of dust in the nebula has been widely invoked. Recently,however, models suggesting that chondrules formed in parent body regoliths have been revived, couldhelp to explain the coexistence of chondrules with chemically differentiated clasts The Boxian meteorite is a fall and was originally described as L4. The widely quoted classification of the chondrite is LL4. In this study, 362 chondrules were separated from the Boxian meteorite,and were measured for their grain sizes, masses and morphologies. 101 of these chondrules were successfully split and parts of them made into polished blocks; the remaining segments were individually set asidefor future oxygen isotopic analyses.
