Some pathogenic characters of paratyphoid Salmonella enterica strains isolated from poultry

Objective: To investigate some pathogenic characters of Salmonella enterica strains isolated from poultry.Methods: Twenty-three genetically distinct Salmonella enterica strains, of different serovars and pulsotype, were examined for virulence traits. Resistance to gastric acid environment was estimated by measuring the percentage of survived bacterial cells after exposure for 2 h to a synthetic gastric juice. Strains were analyzed with PCR for the presence of the following virulence genes: mgtC and rhu M located on SPI-3, sopB and pipB located on SPI-5, Salmonella virulence plasmid(spv)R(spvR), spvB and spvC located on Salmonella plasmid virulence and sodCI, sopE, and gipA located on prophage.Finally, resistance to 21 antibiotics was tested with Kirby–Bauer method.Results: A percentage of 82.60% of strains were resistant to gastric environment after induction and 60.87% of the strains exhibited constitutive resistance too. Nineteen different virulence profiles were detected. The phage related genes sodCI and sopE and the plasmid mediated operon spvR, spvB and spvC(spvRBC) were detected in 82.60%,47.82% and 52.17% of strains, respectively. Typhimurium and Enteritidis strains showed the highest number of virulence genes. Twenty-one different antibiotic resistance profiles were obtained and two isolates(Typhimurium and Enteritidis) resulted sensible to all the tested molecules. The ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance profile was detected in seven isolates(30.43%).Conclusion: Our results show that paratyphoid Salmonella strains with several characters of pathogenicity, that may be cause of severe pathology in animals and humans, are circulating among poultry.

Transient infiltration tests in pyroclastic soils with double porosity

Fallout volcanic deposits of SommaVesuvius(Campania,southern Italy),characterized by the presence of layers with contrasting textural and hydraulic properties,are frequently affected by shallow landslides during rainwater infiltration.The soils of the stratigraphic sequence present intraparticle pores,originated by the gases escaped during magma decompression in the volcanic conduit,thus are characterized by double porosity(i.e.,intraparticle and interparticle pores),which is expected to affect their hydraulic behaviour,and to play a key role in rainwater infiltration through layered deposits.To understand the effect of double porosity on the hydraulic behaviour of the involved soils,controlled experiments have been carried out in an infiltration column.The experimental apparatus is provided with newly designed non-invasive Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR)probes,not buried in the investigated soil layers so as to minimize disturbance to the flow,allowing water content measurement during vertical flow processes.Specifically,transient flow experiments are carried out through reconstituted specimens of black scoriae and grey pumices,both loose pyroclastic granular soils from fallout deposits of Somma-Vesuvius,featuring double porosity with different pore size distributions,that were estimated by X-ray tomography and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry.The experimental results highlight the effects of the double porosity and clearly indicate the different behaviour of the two soils during wetting and drying processes,mainly related to the different dimensions of intraparticle pores.

Overview and specifications of laser and target areas at the Intense Laser Irradiation Laboratory

We present the main features of the ultrashort, high-intensity laser installation at the Intense Laser Irradiation Laboratory(ILIL) including laser, beam transport and target area specifications. The laboratory was designed to host laser–target interaction experiments of more than 220 TW peak power, in flexible focusing configurations, with ultrarelativistic intensity on the target. Specifications have been established via dedicated optical diagnostic assemblies and commissioning interaction experiments. In this paper we give a summary of laser specifications available to users,including spatial, spectral and temporal contrast features. The layout of the experimental target areas is presented, with attention to the available configurations of laser focusing geometries and diagnostics. Finally, we discuss radiation protection measures and mechanical stability of the laser focal spot on the target.

NANOGrav hints on planet-mass primordial black holes

Recently, the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves(NANOGrav) claimed the detection of a stochastic common-spectrum process of the pulsar timing array(PTA) time residuals from their 12.5 year data, which might be the first detection of the stochastic background of gravitational waves(GWs). We show that the amplitude and the power index of such waves imply that they could be the secondary GWs induced by the peaked curvature perturbation with a dust-like post inflationary era with-0.091 ≤ w ≤ 0.048. Such stochastic background of GWs naturally predicts substantial existence of planet-mass primordial black holes(PBHs), which can be the lensing objects for the ultrashort-timescale microlensing events observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment(OGLE).

Characterization of Glycerol-Extractable Organic Matter from Etna Soils of different Ages

We characterized humic acids (HAs) and glycerol-extractable organic fractions (GEOFs) extracted from four Andisols, taken from comparable soil-climate conditions on the east side of Mount Etna. The soils were formed on old lava (about 9 000 years ago), old tephra (about 8 700 years ago), recent lava (about 2 600 years ago) and recent tephra (about 3 600 years ago). A part of the organic matter of the soils, deprived of HAs and fulvic acids (FAs), was isolated by glycerol extraction. The GEOF can not be extracted with alkaline solutions, probably because it is closely bound to the mineral component of the soil. The characterization of the extracted organic fraction was carried out using elementary and functional group analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. About 20 extractions were necessary to extract the HA and FA from the older soils and about 10 extractions to extract them from the younger soils. Data showed that the GEOFs had a greater ash content and a smaller N content, as well as a greater presence of aliphatic compounds and carboxylic groups as compared to the HA extracted from the same soil. The GEOFs extracted from younger soils also had a lower yield, ash and COOH-group content, and were more aliphatic than the GEOF extracted from older soils. Finally, the GEOFs were more closely bound to the amorphous component of the soil (‘short-range’ minerals) and consequently less subject to biodegradation.

History and biology of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC): MSCs were firstly described around 1970s by Friedenstein and his collaborators as a subpopulation of colony forming, clonogenic, plastic adherent stromal bone marrow derived cells, with the capacity to regenerate other tissues (Murphy et al., 2013). Caplan (1991) proposed that these mesenchymal cells were “stem” because of their ability to differentiate to any lineage of mesodermal cells. The richest sources of MSCs are bone marrow and adipose tissue, but they can also be isolated from synovial fluid, periosteum, fetal organs, placenta, umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid (Murphy et al., 2013;Sherman et al., 2015).

Engineering single-photon states endowed with orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a powerful toolfor quantum information photonic implementations. Indeed, due to its unbounded nature, OAM is suitable forencoding qudits, allowing a single carrier to transport a large amount of information. Most of the experimentalplatforms employ spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes to generate single photons, evenif this approach is intrinsically probabilistic, leading to scalability issues for an increasing number of qudits.Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been used to get over these limitations by producing on-demand pure and indistinguishable single-photon states, although only recently they have been exploitedto create OAM modes. Our work employs a bright QD single-photon source to generate a complete set ofquantum states for information processing with OAM-endowed photons. We first study hybrid intraparticleentanglement between OAM and polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon whose preparationwas certified by means of Hong–Ou–Mandel visibility. Then, we investigate hybrid interparticle OAM-based entanglement by exploiting a probabilistic entangling gate. The performance of our approach isassessed by performing quantum state tomography and violating Bell inequalities. Our results pave theway for the use of deterministic sources for the on-demand generation of photonic high-dimensionalquantum states.

A multi-wavelength study of the gravitational lens COSMOS J095930+023427

We present a multi-wavelength study of the gravitational lens COSMOS J095930＋023427 （Zl = 0.892）, together with the associated galaxy group along the line of sight located at z 0.7, and the lensed background galaxy. The source redshift is currently unknown, but estimated to be at zs ~ 2. This analysis is based on publicly available HST, Subaru and Chandra imaging data, as well as VLT spectroscopy. The lensing system is an early-type galaxy showing a strong [OII] emission line, and pro- duces four bright images of the distant background source. It has an Einstein radius of 0.79＂, about four times larger than the effective radius. We perform a lensing anal- ysis using both a singular isothermal ellipsoid and a peudo-isothermal elliptical mass distribution for the lensing galaxy, and find that the final results on the total mass, the dark matter （DM） fraction within the Einstein radius and the external shear due to a foreground galaxy group are robust with respect to the choice of the parametric model and the source redshift （yet unknown）. We measure the luminous mass from the pho- tometric data, and find the DM fraction within the Einstein radius fDM to be between 0.71 ~ 0.13 and 0.79 ~ 0.15, depending on the unknown source redshift. Meanwhile, the non-null external shear found in our lensing models supports the presence and structure of a galaxy group at z ~ 0.7, and an independent measurement of the 0.5- 2 keV X-ray luminosity within 20＂ around the X-ray centroid provides a group mass of M = （3 - 10） x 1013 Mo, in good agreement with the previous estimate derived through weak lensing analysis. Finally, by inverting the HST/ACS/814 image with the lensing equation, we obtain the reconstructed image of the magnified source galaxy, which has a scale of about 3.3 kpc at z~ = 2 （2.7 kpc at zs = 4） and the typical disturbed disk-like appearance observed in low-mass star-forming galaxies at z ~ 3. However, deep, spatially resolved spectroscopic data for similar lensed sources are still required to detect the first stage
