AIM:To analyze the role of rs12979860 and rs8099917polymorphisms in hepatitis C virus(HCV)genotype 1infection of ***:A total of 145 adult patients diagnosed with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C(CHC)who had completed a 48-wk regimen of pegylated-interferonα-2a or-2b plus ribavirin combination therapy were recruited from six large urban healthcare centers and199 healthy blood donors(controls)from a single site between January 2010 and January *** on the patients’response to treatment was *** chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism genotyping of the interleukin(IL)28b gene fragment encompassing the single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)rs12979860(C/T)and rs8099917(T/G)was carried out for 79 of the CHC patients and 199 of the ***-directional amplicon sequencing of the two SNPs was carried out for the remaining 66 CHC ***:SNP rs12979860 genotyping was successful in 99.5%of the controls and 97.2%of the CHC patients,whereas the SNP rs8099917 genotyping was successful in 95.5%of the controls and 100%of the CHC *** genotype and allele distributions for both rs12979860 and rs8099917 were significantly different between the control and CHC patient groups,with significantly higher genotype frequencies of CC and TT in the controls(P=0.037 and 0.046,respectively)and of TT and GG in the CHC patients(P=0.0009and 0.0001,respectively).Analysis of the CHC patients who achieved sustained virological response(SVR)to treatment(n=55)indicated that the rs12979860 C allele and CC genotype were predictors of SVR(P=0.02).No significant correlation was found between rs8099917 genotypes and treatment response,but carriers of the T allele showed significantly higher rates of SVR(P=0.02).Linkage disequilibrium analysis of the group that achieved SVR showed a significant association between rs12979860 and rs8099917(P=0.07).CONCLUSION:The higher allele frequency of rs12979860 C and rs8099917 T observed in non-HCVinfec

Objective:To investigate potential associations of preoperative total testosterone(TT)with tumor volume(TV)and grade of prostate cancer(PCa).Methods:Patients who were under medications impacting on the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal-testis-prostate axis were *** was measured preoperatively at least 1 month after biopsies and TV was calculated on the removed prostate *** continuous variables included total prostate specific antigen(PSA),percentage of positive cores(Pt)and weight(W)of the removed *** were categorized according to the pathologic Gleason score(pGS)in 3 groups(pGS 6,7 and>7).Invasion of the seminal vesicles was coded as seminal vesicle invasion(SVI).Results:The median levels of TT were significantly and increasingly higher from pGS 6(14.7 nmol/L)to pGS 7(15.0 nmol/L)and pGS>7(18.8 nmol/L).The median values of TV were also detected significantly and increasingly higher from pGS 6(5.6 mL)to pGS 7(8.1 mL)and pGS>7(14.8 mL).The median preoperative levels of PSA were also increasing from pGS 6(5.9 μg/L)to pGS 7(6.2 μg/L)and pGS>7(7.7 μg/L).There was a significant and positive correlation of TV to PSA,TT and *** linear regression analysis showed that TV was significantly and independently predicted by TT,PSA and *** grade PCa(pGS>7)independently associated with TV,TT,Pt and *** median density values of TT relative to TV(quotient TT/TV)significantly decreased from pGS 6(2.6 nmol/L/mL)to pGS 7(1.9 nmol/L/mL)and pGS>7(1.4 nmol/L/mL).The median density values of PSA relative to TV(quotient PSA/TV)also significantly decreased from pGS(1.1 μg/L/mL)to pGS 7(0.7 μg/L/mL)and pGS>7(0.6 μg/L/mL).Conclusion:The investigation shows that TT relates to volume and grade of PCa;moreover,the density of TT relative to TV inversely associates with rate of increase of cancer that depends on the grade of the tumour.

The order Onygenales is classified in the class Eurotiomycetes of the subphylum *** in this order have classically been isolated from soil and dung,and two lineages contain causative agents of superficial,cutaneous and systemic infections in *** ecology and habitat choices of the species are driven mainly by the keratin and cellulose degradation *** present study aimed to investigate whether the ecological trends of the members of Onygenales can be interpreted in an evolutionary sense,linking phylogenetic parameters with habitat preferences,to achieve polyphasic definitions of the main taxonomic *** processes were estimated by multiple gene genealogies and divergence time *** described families,namely,Arthrodermataceae,Ajellomycetaceae,Ascosphaeraceae,Eremascaceae,Gymnoascaceae,Onygenaceae and Spiromastigoidaceae,were accepted in Onygenales,and two new families,Malbrancheaceae and Neogymnomycetaceae,were introduced.A number of species could not be assigned to any of the defined *** study provides a revised overview of the main lines of taxonomy of Onygenales,supported by multilocus analyses of ITS,LSU,TUb,TEF1,TEF3,RPb1,RPb2,and ribosomal protein 60S L10(L1)(RP60S)sequences,combined with available data on ecology,physiology,morphology,and genomics.

Peripheral arterial disease, manifested as intermittent claudication or critical ischaemia, or identified by an ankle/brachial index betes *** reasons exist for peripheral arterial disease indiabetes. In addition to hyperglycaemia, smoking and hypertension, the dyslipidaemia that accompanies type2 diabetes and is characterised by increased triglyceride levels and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations also seems to contribute to this association. Recent years have witnessed an increased interest in postprandial lipidaemia, as a result of various prospective studies showing that non-fasting triglycerides predict the onset of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease better than fasting measurements do. Additionally,the use of certain specific postprandial particle markers,such as apolipoprotein b-48, makes it easier and more simple to approach the postprandial phenomenon. despite this, only a few studies have evaluated the role of postprandial triglycerides in the development of peripheral arterial disease and type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this review is to examine the epidemiology and risk factors of peripheral arterial disease in type 2 diabetes, focusing on the role of postprandial triglycerides and particles.

bACKGROUND To achieve the elimination of hepatitis b and C,there is an urgent need to develop alternative strategies to increase the access of diagnosis,particularly among key populations such as people living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV),individuals with coagulopathies and chronic kidney disease(CKD)*** To evaluate the use of dried blood spot(DbS)in the detection of hepatitis b virus(HbV)and hepatitis C virus(HCV)*** A total of 430 individuals comprised of people living with HIV,coagulopathies and CKD provided paired serum and DbS ***,anti-Hbc and anti-HCV were tested in those samples using a commercial *** and selected behavioral variables were evaluated to assess possible association with HbV and HCV *** Using DbS,HbsAg prevalence varied from 3.9%to 22.1%,anti-Hbc rates varied from 25.5%to 45.6%and anti-HCV positivity ranged from 15.9%to 41.2%in key *** of HbV and HCV tests using DbS varied from 88.9%to 100%.The HbsAg assay demonstrated the best performance in CKD and coagulopathy individuals and the anti-HCV test had a sensitivity and specificity of 100%in people living with *** of HbV and HCV detection in DbS varied from 90.2%to 100%.In the CKD group,HbsAg positivity was associated with infrequent use of condoms,and anti-Hbc positivity was associated with sharing nail cutters/razors/***-HCV reactivity was positively associated with a history of transplantation and length of time using hemodialysis in both *** people living with HIV,only the male gender was associated with anti-Hbc positivity in serum and *** DbS with electrochemiluminescence are useful tools for the diagnosis and prevalence studies of hepatitis b and C among key populations and may increase the opportunity to foster prevention and treatment.

background:There are few reports describing the coexistence of dystrophic features with those typical of mitochondrial myopathies in muscle biopsy.A recent study suggested that dystrophic features are frequent in patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia(CPEO)with a high mutation load,but the actual frequency of these abnormalities in CPEO remains ***:To review the occurrence of dystrophic abnormalities in a large series of patients with CPEO to assess the frequency of such abnormalities and to verify whether they are correlated with specific mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)***:Retrospective survey of case series(86 patients with CPEO).Results:Only three cases with dystrophic abnormalities were found:two with a large scale mtDNA deletion and one with the A3251G *** three patients showed predominantly proximal muscular weakness resembling limb girdle muscular ***:Dystrophic abnormalities are rare in CPEO and are not correlated with a specific molecular defect.

background:Pediculosis capitis and scabies are common parasitic skin diseases,especially in resource-poorcommun-ities,but data on epidemiology and morbidity are scanty. Objectives:To assess the prevalence, seasonal variation and morbidity of pediculosis capitis and scabies in poor neighbourhoods in north-east brazil. Methods The study comprised cross-sectional surveys of a representative population of an urban slum (n=1460) in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara State (brazil) and a fishing community 60 km south of the city (n=605). Study participants were examined for the presence of scabies and pediculosis capitis. In a longitudinal study in the slum,variation of prevalence in different seasons of the year was assessed. Results:Prevalence of pediculosis capitis was 43.4%in the slum and 28.1%in the fishing community. Children aged 10-14 years and females were most frequently affected. Scabies was present in 8.8%of the population in the slum and in 3.8%of the population in the fishing community. There was no consistent pattern of age distribution. Superinfection was common in patients with scabies, and cervical lymphadenopathy in patients with pediculosis capitis. Multivariate analysis showed that age ≤15 years, being of female sex and living in the urban slum were independent factors contributing to the simultaneous coinfestation with pediculosis capitis and scabies. The longitudinal data from the urban slum showed a characteristic seasonal variation of pediculosis capitis, but no fluctuation of scabies. Conclusions: Pediculosis capitis and scabies are hyperendemic in the study areas and are associated with considerable morbidity. There is an urgent need to develop control measures for these parasitic skin diseases in resource-poor communities. This is the first community-based study describing in detail the epidemiology and morbidity of scabies and head lice infestation in brazil.
