Dental Caries and Associated Determinants among Students of the Military School of Saint Louis (Senegal)

Introduction: Due to its health, social and economic morbidity, dental caries leads to absenteeism and a drop in school performance among schoolchildren. The objective of this work is to study dental caries and its determinants in pupils known as Children of Troop (CT) of the “Military School of Saint Louis” (MSS). Method: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Recruitment was exhaustive. The collection was made at the school and has covered the period of March 10 throughout June 13, 2014 in an individual interview, based upon a deliberate consent, using a questionnaire drawn up on the basis of the variables studied. The bivariate analysis was done with the Epi Info software version 3.5.3. Results: The mean age of CT was 14.9. The prevalence of caries was 61.2%. Determinants related to caries were: sugar intake between meals (OR = 6.44 [3.4 - 11.9]);insufficient tooth brushing (OR = 14.3 [8.8 - 23.29]);(OR = 3.84 [2.38 - 7.14]) and for regular dental visits (OR = 5.26 [3.44 - 8.33]), with the last dental visit dating back more than one year. Conclusion: In the face of challenges of school performance of CT, it is necessary to set up a control plan focusing mainly on the factors identified and associated with dental caries in military school.

Frequency and Factors Associated with Periodontitis in Congolese Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease which is highly prevalent worldwide. The control of periodontal risk factor network is of paramount importance for the management of the disease. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and identify the factors associated with periodontitis in Congolese patients. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in four medical centers in the city of Kinshasa between April 2017 and April 2018. The study included patients aged at least 12 years old who consulted the dental services of these centers and who met the inclusion criteria. The participants underwent a structured interview and a clinical periodontal examination. The latter involved the entire dentition, and periodontal pocket and attachment level measurements were taken at six sites per tooth. The plaque and bleeding index were recorded. Logistic regression was used to identify associated factors. The significance level was set at p 0.05. Results: The study included 827 patients and 42% of them had periodontitis. The most represented age group was between 20 and 29 years old. In multivariate analysis, age greater than or equal to 35 years, OR = 2.45 CI 95% (1.77 - 3.45), and the amount of plaque expressed as plaque index ≥ 1, OR = 2 CI 95% (1.31 - 3.07) were factors associated with periodontitis. Determinants Factors for the Choice of the Width Prosthetic Upper Central Incisor: Review of the Literature

Materials and Methods: The authors conducted a review of the literature around the theme, determinants of the choice of the width of the upper central incisor (WUCI), through search web including Pub Med, Inari and Google. Fifteen of the most recent publications since 2005 have been selected from twenty publications. Sample size (n), age range (AR), average bi zygomatic distance (BZD), choice determinants, type of study, and mathematical formula between WUCI and BZD were the study’s interest variables. Sociodemographic characteristics, facial anatomical marks and the size of the patient’s teeth for anterosuperior were the main factors to be assessed. Results: Out of 22 included articles, the Asian continent represents 59% in which India is the leading country with 27.3% followed by American 22.8%. The most Determinants choice for the width upper central incisor in craniofacial and anterior teeth method from the published papers were BZD (100%;n = 22) and WUCI (81.8%;n = 18). Conclusion: Application of mathematical formulation maybe help to predict the exact width of the upper central incisor.

Patient Experiences of Medical Screening Performed by the Dental services:A Qualitative Study

Objective: To explore how medical screening performed by the dental service was perceived from the patient’s perspective. Material and methods: Medical screening for high blood pressure and high plasma glucose was performed on 170 patients at a dental clinic in a small town in central Sweden. Seventeen individual interviews were conducted with a strategic sampling of these patients. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The transcriptions were coded and categorized in a manifest analysis, followed by a latent, interpretive analysis. Results: The manifest analysis resulted in three categories: Positive attitude to screening and dental professionals which need to have specific knowledge of medical screening;Dental care which provides continuity but is not a neutral environment;and Feedback on the medical screening results and desired cooperation between dental and health care services. The latent analysis pointed out the importance of the patient’s feeling that the procedure is carried out properly and safely, and requests for clear feedback concerning the results of the screening. Conclusions: The interviewees experienced the dental care service as providing continuity. They would like to have regular medical screenings at their regular dental appointments to identify risks of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. However, they expressed that it was important for the dental care staff to have the necessary medical knowledge. They also wanted good cooperations between the dental and health care services, with clear feedback to the patients about both positive and negative results and, when appropriate, referrals to the health care service.

Isolation and characterisation of human gingival margin-derived STRO-1/MACS^+ and MACS^-cell populations

Recently,gingival margin-derived stem/progenitor cells isolated via STRO-1/magnetic activated cell sorting（MACS） showed remarkable periodontal regenerative potential in *** a second-stage investigation,the present study＇s aim was to perform in vitro characterisation and comparison of the stem/progenitor cell characteristics of sorted STRO-1-positive（MACS~＋） and STRO-1-negative（MACS^-） cell populations from the human free gingival *** were isolated from the free gingiva using a minimally invasive technique and were magnetically sorted using anti-STRO-1 ***,the MACS~＋ and MACS^- cell fractions were characterized by flow cytometry for expression of CD14,CD34,CD45,CD73,CD90,CD105,CD146/MUC18 and ***-forming unit（CFU） and multilineage differentiation potential were assayed for both cell *** marker expression was examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction（PCR）.MACS~＋ and MACS- cell fractions showed plastic ***~＋ cells,in contrast to MACS- cells,showed all of the predefined mesenchymal stem/progenitor cell characteristics and a significantly higher number of CFUs（P〈0.01）.More than 95%of MACS~＋ cells expressed CD105,CD90 and CD73;lacked the haematopoietic markers CD45,CD34 and CD14,and expressed STRO-1 and CD146/***- cells showed a different surface marker expression profile,with almost no expression of CD14 or STRO-1,and more than 95%of these cells expressed CD73,CD90 and CD146/MUC18,as well as the haematopoietic markers CD34 and CD45 and ***~＋ cells could be differentiated along osteoblastic,adipocytic and chondroblastic *** contrast,MACS- cells demonstrated slight osteogenic *** MACS~＋ cells showed significantly higher expression of collagen I（P〈0.05） and collagen III（P〈0.01）,whereas MACS^- cells demonstrated higher expression of osteonectin（P〈0.05;MannWhitney）.The present study is the first to compare gingival MACS~＋ and MACS- cell populations demo

Many studies have been done about the treatment of KCOT, but the recurrence rate still remains high despite the combination of surgical techniques used, associated with or without the use chemical solutions such as Carnoy’s solution or Cryosurgery. Currently, there is no consensus concerning the therapeutic choice for the KCOT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the different treatment methods used for the management of KCOT in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiamusi University and the results obtained from those treatment methods. Settings and Design: Clinical study was done at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiamusi University. Materials and Methods: Analytical retrospective review of 63 cases treated surgically from 2009 to 2015 at the Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiamusi University. All cases diagnosed as KCOT and registered in the archives were used. The level of statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: Of the 63 cases, 55.56% were male and 44.44% female. The sex ratio was 1.25 in favor of male and the average age was 42 years. 81% of the lesions were located in the mandible. Of 40 cases treated by enucleation with peripheral ostectomy, curettage and electric cauterization with application of 2% iodine tincture, no recurrence was found. Of 20 cases treated by the same surgical method but without the application of 2% iodine tincture, recurrence was found in 3 cases (4.76%). 3 cases treated by resection had no recurrence. Significant relation between recurrence and type of treatment was found (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In our series, those cases that were treated by combination of surgical methods used with 2% iodine tincture showed an “improvement” in the reduction of recurrence, suggesting a future question to be examined in experimental study is to test the effectiveness of 2% iodine tincture.

Awareness of Patients toward Dental Implants as an Alternative Treatment to Replace Missing Teeth in Kinshasa, D. R. Congo

Background: Dental implant is an artificial root inserted in the jawbone, which restores a lost tooth so that it looks, feels, and is fit like a natural tooth. It is considered to be the best treatment option for single or multiple missing teeth. The aim of this study was to assess the awareness of patients about dental implants as an alternative treatment in Congolese patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two institutions namely, CBCO Bandal and Ngaliema Clinic, from August to December 2017. A total of 450 respondents have participated in the survey. A printed questionnaire comprised of 20 questions in order to evaluate patients dental awareness was used. Gender, level of education, awareness of dental implant and dental implants therapy, sources of information and the expectation about the sources of information were assessed. The collected data were entered in Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed by SPSS (IBM SPSS 20.0, Chicago, IL, USA) software. Results: Out of 450 participants, 14.4% were aware of dental implants. The main disadvantage of dental implant was the high cost. When asked about the anchorage, 86% didn’t know where the dental implant was anchored. Ninety-two percent didn’t know for how long an implant last, 6% thought that dental implant last for a lifetime. When patients were asked about the sources of information, the dentist (5%) and media (5.5%) were the main sources of information. The majority of patients (88.4%) would like to get information about dental implants from their dentist. Conclusion: Dentists should be more involved in the promotion of information about dental implants as a treatment modality to replace missing teeth.

Purpose: Severe periodontitis (SP) is the sixth most prevalent disease world-wide. Prevalence and incidence are poorly reported in DR Congo. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of SP and to compare its profile with that of mild to moderate periodontitis (MMP). Materials and Methods: Four hundred and four patients from four hospitals of Kinshasa City Capital participated in this study. Probing pocket depth (PPD) at six sites per tooth, bleeding on probing (BoP) and plaque index (PIl) were the main clinical parameters assessed. Results: Out of 404 patients examined in this study, 92 (22.8%) had severe periodontitis and 276 (68.3%) had mild to moderate periodontitis. Among patients with SP, 48 (52%) were female, 44 (48%) were male and 63% of them had a PPD of 6 mm. SP was significantly different from MMP according to patients age, 47.3 ± 18.6 versus 32.87 ± 14.40 years old, p services in Kinshasa City and SP is significantly different from MMP.

BACKGROUND Sleep deprivation can lead to increased body weight and blood pressure(BP),but the latent effects of partial sleep deprivation related to required night sentry duties within a short-term period on cardiometabolic characteristic changes in military personnel are *** To investigate the association between night sentry duty frequency in the past 3 months and cardiometabolic characteristics in armed forces *** A total of 867 armed forces personnel who were aged 18-39 years and did not take any antihypertensive medications in Taiwan in 2020 were *** frequency of night sentry duty was self-reported via a questionnaire(average number of night sentry shifts per month for the past 3 months).Hemodynamic status was assessed via the resting BP and pulse rate(PR).Cardiometabolic risk factors were defined according to the International Diabetes Federation *** linear regression analyses of the associations between night sentry duties and PR,BP,and other metabolic syndrome(MetS)marker levels were performed,with adjustments for age,sex,substance use,body mass index and aerobic *** logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine the associations between night sentry duties and the prevalence of each MetS feature.
