Sediment retention by check dams in the Hekouzhen-Longmen Section of the Yellow River

Coarse sediment retention by check dams is analyzed for five typical catchments in the Hekou-Longmen section of the midstream of the Yellow River,which is an area of high coarse sediment *** catchments are the Huangfuchuan,Kuye,Wuding,Sanchuan and Qiushui River *** amount of coarse sediment retained by check dams in these areas for different periods was *** reduction due to check dams is compared with other soil conservation measures and the results show that check dams are the most effective to rapidly reduce the amount of coarse sediment entering the Yellow *** the average percentage of the drainage area with check dams for the five typical catchments reaches 3.0%,the average sediment reduction ratio can reach 60%.Therefore,to rapidly and effectively reduce the amount of sediment,especially coarse sediment,entering the Yellow River,the area percentage of check dams in the Hekou-Longmen section should be kept around 3%.The Kuye and Huangfuchuan River Basins are the preferred main catchments in which such water conservation measures are implemented.

Structural Finite Element Software Coupling Using Adapter Elements

This paper describes a versatile and computationally efficient method for coupling several finite element analysis(FEA)programs together so that the unique modeling and analysis capabilities of each code can be utilized simultaneously to simulate the static or dynamic response of a complete numerical *** arbitrary number of finite element analysis software packages can be coupled by adding two special types of elements,namely generic and adapter elements,to each of the finite element applications using their programming *** elements are inserted at the interfaces between the different sub-domains of the complete system modeled by each finite element analysis software *** of data between the coupled FEA codes is accomplished in a modular and synchronized manner using OpenFresco(Opensource Framework for Experimental Setup and Control).OpenFresco is an objectoriented,environment independent software framework initially developed for hybrid simulation in which certain aspects of a complete structure are simulated numerically and other aspects are simultaneously tested *** important practical advantage of this coupled analysis approach is that all of the connected FEA codes run concurrently and continuously,decreasing analysis time consumption by an order of magnitude or more compared to more traditional approaches that shut down and restart the coupled analysis codes at each integration time *** implementation and accuracy of this approach to FE software coupling are demonstrated using dynamic analyses of three simple structural models from the field of earthquake engineering.

The Antioxidation Properties of the In-situ Ceramic from Pyrolyzing Polysilicone Preceramic

A systematic research on the pyrolysis process of polymethysilicone (SAR-2) and the thermostability of the pyrolysis residue was made by the thermogravimetric analysis, DTA and infrared *** experimental results indicate that the pyrolysis residue of SAR-2 converted into the amorphous SiC_xO_(4-x) phase above 900 ℃,the residue at 1200 ℃ is the most thermostable and *** is suitable to be used as polysilicone preceramic.

A semi-implicit three-dimensional numerical model for non-hydrostatic pressure free-surface flows on an unstructured,sigma grid

A semi-implicit 3-D numerical formulation for solving non-hydrostatic pressure free-surface flows on an unstructured,sigma grid is ***-splitting and 9 semi-implicit methods are inherited and reformed from Casulli’s z-coordinate *** non-orthogonal sigma-coordinate transformation leads to additional terms. The resulting linear system for the non-hydrostatic correction is diagonally dominant but unsymmetric,and it is solved by the BiCGstab *** contrast with z-coordinate non-hydrostatic models,the new model fits vertical boundaries much better,which is important for the long-time simulation of sediment transport and riverbed deformation.A lock-exchange density flow is computed to determine whether the new scheme is able to simulate non-hydrostatic free-surface *** new model is further verified using the field data of a natural river bend of the lower Yangtze *** agreement between simulations and earlier research results,field data is obtained, indicating that the new model is applicable to hydraulic projects in real rivers.

Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures is a serious problem in ocean engineering. As an orientation of study, anticorrosion coating technique is developed and widely applied, but many problems need to be solved. LSW-2 type anticorrosion coating for maritime reinforced concrete structures is characterized by sea water resistance, salt fog resistance, moisture and heal resistance as well as impermeability to chlorions. The new type coating can be applied to wet concrete surface by conventional construction technique. It is a breakthrough in solving the above mentioned problem. The paper mainly introduces the test results, the property indices, coating procedure, construction technique and economic benefit of Ihe coating.

Effects of deep soil mixing on existing shield tunnels in soft soil ground

To mitigate the impact of adjacent construction on existing shield tunnels,deep soil mixing(DSM)has been widely used to reinforce the soft soil ground around shield ***,the construction of DSM may cause the movement of existing shield tunnels under soft soil and sensitive ground conditions,and reasonable installation parameters will reduce the impact of DSM construction on the existing shield *** on the field tests of DSM installation parameters and a program of field measurements of existing shield tunnels during the DSM construction in Suzhou,the reasonable installation parameters of DSM were selected,and the movement of soil behind the soil mixing walls(SMWs)during multirow DSM installation was *** movement of the shield tunnels caused by DSM construction were discussed in *** field test results showed that the DSM columns installed at a higher speed and a lower water-cement ratio enlarged the movement of the surrounding *** DSM should be installed at a lower speed and a higher watercement ratio to reduce the movement of the shield *** field measurement results showed that the displacement of the tunnel lining was primarily caused by the construction of DSM zones beside the shield tunnels,which led to vertical compression and horizontal expansion of the tunnel *** construction of DSM immediately above the shield tunnels caused uplift to the *** addition,the deformed shapes of the two shield tunnels were asymmetric,and the displacement of the spring lining was larger than that of the *** taking the reasonable installation parameters of DSM and under the protection of the SMWs,the deformation of the shield tunnels caused by the construction of DSM was effectively controlled,and the maximum displacement was within the control value of the shield tunnels in this study.

Ten full-scale steel beam-to-column moment connections used in moment-resisting frames （MRFs） were tested to study the failure process, failure mode, strength and plastic rotation capacity. The specimens include one traditional welded flange-bolted web connection, one traditional fully welded connection, four beam flange strengthened connections, three beam flange weakened connections, and one through-diaphragm connection. The test results show that the connections with flange cover plates or with partly cut beam flanges satisfy the beam plastic rotation demand for ductile MRFs. From the measured stress profiles along the beam flange and beam web depth, the mechanics of brittle fracture at the end of the beam is discussed. Design recommendations for steel beam-to-column moment connections are proposed.

Corrected Formula of Bed Resistance Coefficient for Plane Numerical Simulation of Tidal Current

By means of a logarithm law for the velocity profile, a corrected formula of bed resistance coefficient, which involves many factors such as gradient of still water depth, variation of surface elevation, flow direction, and so on, is derived from the 3D governing equations of tidal current by averaging over the whole water depth. Theoretical analysis and application have shown that the 2D plane tidal current numerical model would be more reasonable and could be applied to steep bottom topography when the corrected bed resistance coefficient is used, therefore the results of reproduction simulation and engineering calculation would be more scientific and reasonable.

Smoothed response spectra including soil-structure interaction effects

Elastic response spectra that take into account the effects of soil-structure interaction on soft soils are developed. The response spectra are calculated utilizing a 3 DOF system including deformations of the superstructure and foundation. The equations of motion of the system are solved using direct integration under normalized earthquake records. Statistical processing of the results is implemented resulting in response spectra for "short and dense buildings with low interaction", "short and dense buildings with high interaction", "tall and light buildings with low interaction" and "tall and light buildings with high interaction". The resulting response spectra are smoothed and discussed.
