The influence of resistance exercise training prescription variables on skeletal muscle mass,strength,and physical function in healthy adults:An umbrella review

Purpose:The aim of this umbrella review was to determine the impact of resistance training(RT)and individual RT prescription variables on muscle mass,strength,and physical function in healthy adults.Methods:Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA)guidelines,we systematically searched and screened eligible systematic reviews reporting the effects of differing RT prescription variables on muscle mass(or its proxies),strength,and/or physical function in healthy adults aged>18 years.Results:We identified 44 systematic reviews that met our inclusion criteria.The methodological quality of these reviews was assessed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews;standardized effectiveness statements were generated.We found that RT was consistently a potent stimulus for increasing skeletal muscle mass(4/4 reviews provide some or sufficient evidence),strength(4/6 reviews provided some or sufficient evidence),and physical function(1/1 review provided some evidence).RT load(6/8 reviews provided some or sufficient evidence),weekly frequency(2/4 reviews provided some or sufficient evidence),volume(3/7 reviews provided some or sufficient evidence),and exercise order(1/1 review provided some evidence)impacted RT-induced increases in muscular strength.We discovered that 2/3 reviews provided some or sufficient evidence that RT volume and contraction velocity influenced skeletal muscle mass,while 4/7 reviews provided insufficient evidence in favor of RT load impacting skeletal muscle mass.There was insufficient evidence to conclude that time of day,periodization,inter-set rest,set configuration,set end point,contraction velocity/time under tension,or exercise order(only pertaining to hypertrophy)influenced skeletal muscle adaptations.A paucity of data limited insights into the impact of RT prescription variables on physical function.Conclusion:Overall,RT increased muscle mass,strength,and physical function compared to no exercise.RT intensity(load)and weekly frequency impacted RT-

Converting TREx-RGB green-channel data to 557.7 nm auroral intensity:Methodology and initial results

The recently deployed Transition Region Explorer(TREx)-RGB(red-green-blue)all-sky imager(ASI)is designed to capture“true color”images of the aurora and airglow.Because the 557.7 nm green line is usually the brightest emission line in visible auroras,the green channel of a TREx-RGB camera is usually dominated by the 557.7 nm emission.Under this rationale,the TREx mission does not include a specific 557.7 nm imager and is designed to use the RGB green-channel data as a proxy for the 557.7 nm aurora.In this study,we present an initial effort to establish the conversion ratio or formula linking the RGB green-channel data to the absolute intensity of 557.7 nm auroras,which is crucial for quantitative uses of the RGB data.We illustrate two approaches:(1)through a comparison with the collocated measurement of green-line auroras from the TREx spectrograph,and(2)through a comparison with the modeled green-line intensity according to realistic electron precipitation flux measurements from low-Earth-orbit satellites,with the aid of an auroral transport model.We demonstrate the procedures and provide initial results for the TREx-RGB ASIs at the Rabbit Lake and Lucky Lake stations.The RGB response is found to be nonlinear.Empirical conversion ratios or formulas between RGB green-channel data and the green-line auroral intensity are given and can be applied immediately by TREx-RGB data users.The methodology established in this study will also be applicable to the upcoming SMILE ASI mission,which will adopt a similar RGB camera system in its deployment.

There are few plant processes that are not in one way or another influenced by the auxin signaling molecule.The many roles auxin plays in plants have inspired a range of investigations towards understanding its mechanisms of action.In recent years and decades,genetic analysis in the flowering plant Arabidopsis has been immensely successful in bringing a nuclear response mechanism to light(reviewed in Weijers and Wagner,2016).This system,the nuclear auxin pathway(NAP),acts by regulating gene expression,and when its components are mutated,growth and development is strongly disturbed(Weijers and Wagner,2016).

The effect of Common Cuckoo parasitism on the annual productivity of a host population

Avian interspecific brood parasitism is an excellent system for studying coevolutionary processes in nature because brood parasites directly affect host reproductive success.Most research on avian brood parasitism has,therefore,focused primarily on specific host anti-parasite behaviours and parasite counter-adaptations.However,the population-level consequences of brood parasitism for host species are poorly understood.This study investigated the effect of Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus)parasitism on the productivity of a local population of the Great Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus arundinaceus)host in south-western Slovakia.A total of 495 females nesting at the studied site successfully fledged 1321 of their own young and 63 young of the Common Cuckoo over the course of 15 years(2008-2022),and the annual rate of successful parasitism ranged from 18% to 44% over this period.As predicted,higher rates of successful cuckoo parasitism significantly reduced the annual productivity of the local Great Reed Warbler population,and its contribution to decreased host reproductive success was at about the same rate as overall nest failure caused by predation and other environmental factors.Such a heavily parasitized population was probably maintained by immigrants from other populations and density-dependent selection,which is also consistent with source-sink dynamics.However,further long-term studies monitoring parasitized populations are required to confirm these findings.

Interatomic Interaction Models for Magnetic Materials:Recent Advances

Atomistic modeling is a widely employed theoretical method of computational materials science.It has found particular utility in the study of magnetic materials.Initially,magnetic empirical interatomic potentials or spinpolarized density functional theory(DFT)served as the primary models for describing interatomic interactions in atomistic simulations of magnetic systems.Furthermore,in recent years,a new class of interatomic potentials known as magnetic machine-learning interatomic potentials(magnetic MLIPs)has emerged.These MLIPs combine the computational efficiency,in terms of CPU time,of empirical potentials with the accuracy of DFT calculations.In this review,our focus lies on providing a comprehensive summary of the interatomic interaction models developed specifically for investigating magnetic materials.We also delve into the various problem classes to which these models can be applied.Finally,we offer insights into the future prospects of interatomic interaction model development for the exploration of magnetic materials.

Spatial sensitivity to absorption changes for various near-infrared spectroscopy methods:A compendium review

This compendium review focuses on the spatial distribution of sensitivity to localized absorption changes in optically diffuse media,particularly for measurements relevant to near-infrared spectroscopy.The three temporal domains,continuous wave,frequency domain,and time domain,each obtain different optical data types whose changes may be related to effective homogeneous changes in the absorption coefficient.Sensitivity is the relationship between a localized perturbation and the recovered effective homogeneous absorption change.Therefore,spatial sensitivity maps representing the perturbation location can be generated for the numerous optical data types in the three temporal domains.The review first presents a history of the past 30 years of work investigating this sensitivity in optically diffuse media.These works are experimental and theoretical,presenting one-,two-,and three-dimensional sensitivity maps for different Near-Infrared Spectroscopy methods,domains,and data types.Following this history,we present a compendium of sensitivity maps organized by temporal domain and then data type.This compendium provides a valuable tool to compare the spatial sensitivity of various measurement methods and parameters in one document.Methods for one to generate these maps are provided in Appendix A,including the code.This historical review and comprehensive sensitivity map compendium provides a single source researchers may use to visualize,investigate,compare,and generate sensitivity to localized absorption change maps.

Previously undiagnosed Morgagni hernia with bowel perforation detected during repeat screening colonoscopy: A case report

BACKGROUND Morgagni hernia(MH)is a form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia(CDH)characterized by an incomplete formation of diaphragm,resulting in the protru-sion of abdominal organs into the thoracic cavity.The estimated incidence of CDH is between 1 in 2000 and 1 in 5000 live births,although the true incidence is unknown.MH typically presents in childhood and can be diagnosed either pre-natally or postnatally.However,it can also be asymptomatic and carry the risk of developing into a life-threatening condition in adulthood.CASE SUMMARY A 76-year-old female with no history of prior abdominal surgeries presented for an elective colonoscopy for polyp surveillance.During the procedure,when approaching the hepatic flexure,the scope could not be advanced further despite multiple attempts.The patient experienced mild abdominal discomfort,leading to the abortion of the procedure.While in the recovery area,she developed increa-sing abdominal pains and hypotension.Urgent abdominal imaging revealed her-niation of the proximal transverse colon through a MH into the chest with evi-dence of perforation.The patient underwent laparoscopic urgent colonic resection and primary hernia repair and was discharged uneventfully 2 d later.CONCLUSION A MH is a rare condition in adults that can present as a life-threatening compli-cation of colonoscopy,even in patients with a history of uneventful colonoscopies.This case highlights the importance of considering congenital and internal hernias when faced with sudden and unexplained difficulties during colonoscopy.If there is a suspicion of MH,the endoscopist should halt the procedure and immediately obtain abdominal imaging to confirm the diagnosis.

Risk factors for long COVID in children and adolescents:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background The long-term sequelae of COVID-19 in children and adolescents remain poorly understood and characterized.This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to summarize the risk factors for long COVID in the pediatric population.Methods We searched six databases from January 2020 to May 2023 for observational studies reporting on risk factors for long COVID or persistent symptoms those were present 12 or more weeks post-infection using multivariable regression analyses.Trial registries,reference lists of included studies,and preprint servers were hand-searched for relevant studies.Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to pool odds ratios for each risk factor.Individual study risk of bias was rated using QUIPS,and the GRADE framework was used to assess the certainty of evidence for each unique factor.Results Sixteen observational studies(N=46,262)were included,and 19 risk factors were amenable to meta-analysis.With moderate certainty in the evidence,age(per 2-year increase),allergic rhinitis,obesity,previous respiratory diseases,hospitalization,severe acute COVID-19,and symptomatic acute COVID-19 are probably associated with an increased risk of long COVID.Female sex,asthma,comorbidity,and heart diseases may be associated with an increased risk of long COVID,and Asian and Black races may be associated with a decreased risk of long COVID.We did not observe any credible subgroup effects for any risk factor.Conclusions The current body of literature presents several compelling risk factors for the development of long COVID in the pediatric population.Further research is necessary to elucidate the pathophysiology of long COVID.

It is a pleasure to write a commentary on the work of Dr.Hannah Rice and colleagues,l who have advanced our understanding of how the mechanical loading environment of the tibia changes as a function of running grade and speed.It is important that we understand how the tibia is loaded during conditions that an individual is likely to encounter when running as it is these internal loads which we believe are responsible for the development of bone-stress injuries.

Cyclicity of the Lower Buntsandstein in the eastern part of the Central European Basin:implications for Early Triassic palaeogeography and for geochronological calibration

Lower Buntsandstein small—scale cycles recognized in the Central European Basin(CEB) are readily used for astrochronological calibration of the Early Triassic time scales,although they are not well studied sedimentologically.Three borehole sections from the eastern part of the CEB,forming a south-north transect perpendicular to the basin axis,were studied in terms to better understand the depositional history of the Lower Buntsandstein developed as the Baltic Formation in the studied Polish part of the basin.Eleven sedimentary facies were recognized,based on lithological and sedimentological investigations of 655.7 m of drill cores from the Otyń IG 1,Gorzów Wielkopolski IG 1 and Kamień Pomorski IG 1 boreholes.The facies can be grouped according to a lithological criterion into facies of predominantly siliciclastic lithology(including 9facies types) and facies of predominantly carbonate lithology(including 2 facies types).Facies analysis allowed to distinguish 8 facies associations of:1) alluvial fan,2) playa,3) sandy-muddy coastal plain,4)embayment and distal delta,5) lagoon,6) sand bars or shoals,7) ooidal shoals or bars,and 8) offshore.Deepening-upward(DC) and shallowing-upward(SC) sedimentary cycles were recognized in parts of the Baltic Formation,with DCs dominating in the southernmost located Otyń IG 1,and SCs dominating in Gorz ow Wielkopolski IG 1,located in the axial part of the basin.Symmetrical cycles are very rare.The statistical significance of the sedimentary cycles is relatively low according to Markov-chain analysis conducted with the phpSedistat software of Stanova et al.(2009).Analysis of small—scale cycles performed on well logs of investigated boreholes and additional boreholes in the vicinity of Otyń IG 1,implementing the earlier study of Becker(2005),showed that the correlation of well-log cycles(GR cycles) and sedimentary cycles is not obvious.GR cycles can be roughly correlated with lithological carbonate—siliciclastic cycles(c-s cycles),reflecting alternations of facies groups of predomina
