Association between COVID-19 and anxiety during social isolation:A systematic review

BACKGROUND The uncertainties about coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),the change in routine,lifestyles and the reduction of physical contact can cause stress,anxiety,emotional overload,poor sleep and even physical health complications.AIM To evaluate the scientific publications available on the relationship between COVID-19 and anxiety experienced in the general population,during the period of social isolation,adopted by governmental organizations and public health policymakers as a measure to contain the spread of cases.METHODS A literature search was performed systematically exploring the PubMed and Medline databases using the following terms classified as MeSH descriptors:(“anxiety”AND“pandemic”AND“COVID-19”).For the search,in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde–BVS,Science.gov,Web of Science and National Library plat forms, the following keywords were used: ("anxiety" AND "coronavirus" AND"social isolation"). Thirty-seven peer-reviewed articles were found. PRISMA andthe Downs & Black checklist were used for qualitative evaluation.RESULTSAfter applying the inclusion criteria, seven (n = 7) original scientific articles wereselected. The collated evidence demonstrated increased levels of symptoms ofanxiety and depression during the period of social isolation. The populationbetween 21 to 40 years was most affected. The risk of severe depression was twiceas high at the epicenter of the pandemic. Sleep quality was significantly impaired.Questions about politics, religion, and consumption of products from China werefound to generate fear and anticipate probable changes in the pattern of postpandemicconsumption. Social isolation exacerbated feelings of extreme hopelessness,sadness, loneliness and suicidal ideation.CONCLUSIONWe conclude that there is a potential relationship between social isolation duringthe COVID-19 pandemic and symptoms of anxiety. Evaluation of Three Harvest Control Rules for Bigeye Tuna(Thunnus obesus) Fisheries in the Indian Ocean

The stock of Bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus) in the Indian Ocean supports an important international fishery and is considered to be fully exploited. The responsible management agency, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission(IOTC), does not have an explicit management decision-making framework in place to prevent over-fishing. In this study, we evaluated three harvest control rules, i) constant fishing mortality(CF), from 0.2 to 0.6, ii) constant catch(CC), from 60000 to 140000 t, and iii) constant escapement(CE), from 0.3 to 0.7. The population dynamics simulated by the operating model was based on the most recent stock assessment using Stock Synthesis version Ⅲ(SS3). Three simulation scenarios(low, medium and high productivity) were designed to cover possible uncertainty in the stock assessment and biological parameters. Performances of three harvest control rules were compared on the basis of three management objectives(over 3, 10 and 25 years): i) the probability of maintaining spawning stock biomass above a level that can sustain maximum sustainable yield(MSY) on average, ii) the probability of achieving average catches between 0.8 MSY and 1.0 MSY, and iii) inter-annual variability in catches. The constant escapement strategy(CE=0.5), constant fishing mortality strategy(F=0.4) and constant catch(CC=80000) were the most rational among the respective management scenarios. It is concluded that the short-term annual catch is suggested at 80000 t, and the potential total allowable catch for a stable yield could be set at 120000 t once the stock had recovered successfully. All the strategies considered in this study to achieve a ‘tolerable' balance between resource conservation and utilization have been based around the management objectives of the IOTC.

BackgroundHuman rabies outbreak transmitted by bats continues to be a relevant public health problem not only in the Amazon region. The disease has affected one of the areas with the greatest poverty in southeastern Brazil, a region inhabited by the Maxakali indigenous people.Case presentationWe describe four cases of rabies among indigenous children that occurred in the indigenous village of Pradinho, municipality of Bertópolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cases were notified between April and May 2022, all of whom died on average eight days after the first symptoms. All cases were observed in rural residents under 12 years of age. The probable form of exposure was through bat bites. The predominant symptoms were prostration, fever, dyspnea, sialorrhea, tachycardia, and altered level of consciousness. Half of the cases underwent late and/or incomplete post-exposure rabies prophylaxis, however, the other half underwent pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis, with only one case completing the scheme and another undergoing the adapted Milwaukee Protocol (Recife Protocol). All cases ended in death.ConclusionsThis was the first rabies outbreak among indigenous people in Brazil. Among the manifested clinical forms in the series, there was a disease atypical presentation in at least one case. We suggest active surveillance and an intercultural educational campaign to prevent new cases.
