OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of herb-partitioned moxibustion(HPM) for primary ***: Six hundred and forty patients were randomized assigned(1∶1) to HPM group and control group. Duration of treatment was 3 months with 3 month follow-up. The primary outcome was pain relief measured by visual analogue scale(VAS). The second outcomes were Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale(CMSS), menstrual pain duration and frequency of analgesics usage. The exploratory outcome included quality of life,RESULTS: After the 3-month treatment and follow-ups, the pain intensity measured by VAS was significantly reduced in both groups compared with baseline(P < 0.05), and it was significantly decreased in HPM group than that of control group(P < 0.001). The higher proportion of participants in the HPM group had a decrease of at least 50% in VAS at the end of treatment, as compared with the control group(P < 0.001). At the 3 rd and 6 th month, the menstrual pain duration, CMSS score and frequency of analgesics usage in HPM group were significantly lower than those of control group(P < 0.05). After 3 month treatment and follow-ups,the scores of physical, psychological, social and environmental domains were significantly increased than baseline in both groups(P < 0.05),and the sores of physical, psychological and environmental domains were significantly higher in HPM group than those of control group(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Herb-partitioned moxibustion reduced menstrual pain and improved quality of life,these were sustained for up to 3 months after treatment. Further research is needed to understand long term effect and the mechanism of the intervention.

OBJECTIVE： To investigate the efficacy and safety of chinese herbal medicines in the treatment of patients with vascular dementia. DATA RETRIEVAL： We retrieved publications from Cochrane Library （2004 to July 2011）, PubMed （1966 to July 2011）, the chinese Science and Technique Journals Database （1977 to July 2011）, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure （1979 to July 2011）, Google Scholar （July 2011）, and the chinese Biomedical Database （1977 to July 2011） using the key words ＂chinese medicine OR chinese herbal medicine＂ and ＂vascular dementia OR mild cognition impair OR multi-infarct dementia OR small-vessel dementia OR strategic infarct dementia OR hypoperfusion dementia OR hemorrhagic dementia OR hereditary vascular dementia＂. SELECTION CRITERIA： Randomized controlled trials comparing chinese herbal medicines with placebo/western medicine in the treatment of patients with vascular dementia were included. Diagnostic standards included Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV, and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and Association Internationale pour la Recherche et I＇Enseignement en Neurosciences. Two participants independently conducted literature screening, quality evaluation and data extraction. The quality of each trial was assessed according to the Cochrane Reviewers＇ Handbook 5.0. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Effective rate, Mini-Mental State Examination scores, Hasegawa Dementia Scale scores, and incidence of adverse reactions. RESULTS： We identified 1 143 articles discussing the effects of chinese medicine on vascular dementia. Thirty-one of these were included in the analysis. These studies involved a total of 2 868 participants （1 605 patients took chinese medicine decoctions （treatment group）; 1 263 patients took western medicine or placebo）. The results of our meta-analysis revealed that chinese herbal remedies in the treatment group were more efficacious than the control intervention （relative risk （RR） = 1.27; 95%

To assess the efficacy and safety of Gastrosis No.1 compound in the treatment of functional dyspepsia with Spleen （Pi） and Stomach （Wei） deficiency-cold syndrome. Methods： A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed in 5 centers. Patients with functional dyspepsia （FD） of Spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome （162 cases） were randomly assigned to groups given chinese herbal medicine （CHM） Gastrosis No.1 compound or placebo in a 2：1 ratio. This trial included a 4-week treatment period and a 4-week follow-up period. The outcomes were the dyspepsia symptom scores （measured by total dyspepsia symptom scale and single dyspepsia symptom scale） and syndromes of traditional chinese medicine score （measured by traditional chinese medicine syndrome scale）. The outcomes were noted at weeks 0, 4 and 8. Results： Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the CHM group showed significant improvement in the dyspepsia symptom scores as rated by patients and investigators （P〈0.01）, and also showed improvement in syndromes of traditional chinese medicine score （P〈0.01）. No serious adverse event was reported. Safety tests obtained after 4 weeks of treatment showed no abnormal values. Conclusion： CHM Gastrosis No.1 compound was effective and safe in the treatment of functional dyspepsia with Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold syndrome.

OBJECTIVE： To systematically assess the clinical ef- fectiveness of traditional chinese medicine （TCM） in the treatment of functional dyspepsia （FD） of liv- er-stomach disharmony syndrome by meta-analysis. METHODS： Random controlled trials （RCTs） were retrieved from databases, including Pubmed, China national knowledge infrastructure, Wanfang Data, VlP Information, and the Cochrane Library. Trials were selected according to inclusion criteria. The ef- fects of traditional chinese medicine （TCM） versus prokinetic agents in the treatment of functional dyspepsia （FD） of liver-stomach disharmony syn- drome were compared by meta-analysis. RevMan 5.0.24 was used for data analysis. The effective rate was assessed by odds ratios （ORs）, and 95% confi- dence intervals （C＇/s） were calculated. The cure rate was analyzed by the Peto OR. Simple statistica~ anal- ysis was chosen to assess the frequency of pre- scribed chinese herbs in treating this ***： Thirteen trials were included, involving 1153 patients, and these were of poor methodolog- ical quality. Twelve studies mentioned the effective rate and cure rate. TCM therapy showed a better clinical effect rate compared with that with proki- netic agents [OR： 3.2, 95% CI （2.27, 4.51）]. The TCM group also had a better cure rate than that in the group of prokinetic agents [Peto OR： 2.26, 95% CI （1.61, 3.18）]. With regard to the frequency of Chi- nese herbs used in these 13 trials, Baishao （Radix Paeoniae）, Chaihu （Radix Bupleuri）, and Gancao （Ra- dix Glycyrrhizae） were mostly prescribed, followed by Xiangfu （Rhizoma Cyperi）, Zhishi （Fructus Auran- tii Immaturus）, Zhiqiao （Fructus Aurantii）, Foshou （Citrus medica ***）, and Chenpi （Peri- carpium Citri Reticulatae）. No serious adverse ef- fects were reported. CONCLUSION： TCM therapy shows a superior effec- tive rate and cure rate compared with those in pro- kinetic agents in the treatment of FD of liver-stom- ach disharmony syndrome. Effect of Tianshu capsule in treatment of migraine:a meta-analysi of randomized control trials

OBJECTIVE： To review the efficacy of Tianshu capsule in the treatment of migraine. METHODS： Retrieving papers from Pubmed, cochrane central register of controlled trials （CENTRAL）, Weipu database （VIP）, China biology medicine （CBM）, China national knowledge infrastructure （CNKI）, and Wanfang Data. Two reviewers retrieved and extracted the information indepen- dently. Retrieval time scale is up to August *** Review Manager 5.1 was used for analysis RESULTS： A total of 10 studies including 937 mi- graine patients. The merged data shows Tianshu capsule had a higher effective rate in treating mi- graine, and there is no significant heterogeneity between Tianshu capsule group and control group （x2=6.33, dr-=9, P=0.71, F=0%）, OR=4.18 [95%0 （2.93,5.95）]. Tianshu capsule alone compared to conventional therapy also showed advantages, and there was low heterogeneity （X2=4.53, dr=3, P=0.21, 12 = 34%）, OR=3.95 [95% CI （2.32, 6.72）]. Meta-analysis results show that clinical efficacy of Tianshu capsule was better than that of the control group in the treatment of migraine and there was a signifi- cant difference （P〈0.000 01）. CONCLUSION： Tianshu capsule had better efficacy in the treatment of migraine with fewer adverse effects.

Change of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with nonarteritic inflammatory anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

In this study, 16 patients （19 eyes） with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in the acute stage （within 4 weeks） and resolving stage （after 12 weeks） were diagnosed by a series of complete ophthalmic examinations, including fundus examination, optical coherence tomography and fluorescein fundus angiography, and visual field defects were measured with standard automated perimetry. The contralateral uninvolved eyes were used as controls. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was determined by optical coherence tomography which showed that the mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness from temporal, superior, nasal and inferior quadrants were significantly higher for all measurements in the acute stage than the corresponding normal values. In comparison, the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness from each optic disc quadrant was found to be significantly lower when measured at the resolving stages, than in the control group. Statistical analysis on the correlation between optic disc nerve fiber layer thickness and visual defects demonstrated a positive correlation in the acute stage and a negative correlation in the resolving stage. Our experimental findings indicate that optical coherence tomography is a useful diagnostic method for nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and can be used to evaluate the effect of treatment.
