Metal complexes of bipyridine-functionalized covalent organic frameworks as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Electrocatalytic water splitting is considered a clean and practic al method for producing *** this study,COF-Bpy,a bipyridine-functionalized covalent organic framework(COF),was prepared via post-synthetic modification,after which electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reactions(OER)were formed through coordination to single-or double-transition metals(Fe,Co,Ni,FeCo,FeNi or CoNi).COF-Bpy@FeNi delivered the best OER performance among the studied electrocatalysts,with an overpotential of 399 mV at 10 mA·cm^(-2)in an alkaline electrolyte(1.0 mol·L^(-1)KOH aqueous).Notably,the electrocatalytic performance of COF-Bpy@FeNi showed slight degradation during durability testing,which is ascribable to its irreversible benzoquinoline structure and strong metal *** expected,COF-Bpy@FeNi exhibited a low overpotential of 347 mV at a turnover frequency(TOF)of 0.1 s^(-1),which suggests that COF-Bpy@FeNi possesses excellent intrinsic electroc atalytic OER ***,density functional theory(DFT)calculations reveal that the Ni site plays a major role,while the Fe site adjusts the electronic structure of the Ni ions,which rationalizes the excellent OER properties of COF-Bpy@*** study not only provides a simple and efficient method for complexing COFs with transition metals,but also offers a novel strategy for designing porous organic polymer electrocatalysts.

Experimental investigation of the inhibition of deep-sea mining sediment plumes by polyaluminum chloride

Deep-sea sediment disturbance may occur when collecting polymetallic nodules,resulting in the creation of plumes that could have a negative impact on the ecological *** study aims to investigate the potential solution of using polyaluminum chloride(PAC)in the water *** effects of PAC are examined through a self-designed simulation system for deep-sea polymetallic nodule collection and sediment samples from a potential deep-sea mining *** experimental results showed that the optimal PAC dose was found to be 0.75 g/*** with the test conditions without the addition of PAC,the presence of PAC leads to a reduction in volume,lower characteristic turbidity,smaller diffusion velocity,and shorter settling time of the *** indicates that PAC inhibits the entire development process of the *** addition of PAC leads to the flocculation of mm-sized particles,resulting in the formation of cm-sized *** flocculation of particles decreases the rate of erosion on the seabed by around 30%.This reduction in erosion helps to decrease the formation of ***,when the size of suspended particles increases,it reduces the scale at which they ***,the settling velocity of flocs(around 10^(-2) m/s)is much higher that of compared to sediment particles(around 10^(-5) m/s),which effectively reduces the amount of time the plume remains in suspension.

Structural engineering of hard carbon through spark plasma sintering for enhanced sodium-ion storage

Hard carbon(HC)has emerged as one of the superior anode materials for sodium-ion batteries(SIBs),with its electrochemical performance significantly influenced by the presence of oxygen functional groups and its closed pore ***,current research on the structural adjustment of these oxygen functional groups and the closed pore architecture within HC remains ***,energy-efficient and contamination-free spark plasma sintering technology was employed to tune the structure of coconut-shell HC,resulting in significant adjustments to the content of carboxyl(decreasing from 5.71 at%to 2.12 at%)and hydroxyl groups(decreasing from 7.73 at%to 6.26 at%).Crucially,these modifications reduced the irreversible reaction of oxygen functional groups with Na^(+).Simultaneously,a substantial number of closed pores with an average diameter of 1.22 nm were generated within the HC,offering an ideal environment for efficient Na^(+)*** structural changes resulted in a remarkable improvement in the electrochemical performance of the modified *** reversible specific capacity of the modified HC surged from 73.89 mAh·g^(-1)to an impressive 251.97 m Ah·g^(-1)at a current density of 50 mA·g^(-1).Even at 400 mA·g^(-1),the reversible specific capacity increased significantly from 14.55 to 85.44 mAh·g^(-1).Hence,this study provides a novel perspective for designing tailored HC materials with the potential to develop high-performance SIBs.

Hydraulic jetting is a form of fracturing that involves using a high-pressure jet of water to create fractures in the reservoir rock with a nozzle serving as the central component of the hydraulic sandblasting perforation *** this study,the flow behavior of the nozzle is simulated numerically in the framework of a SST k-ωturbulence *** results show that the nozzle structure can significantly influence the jet performance and related cavitation *** orthogonal experiments,the nozzle geometric parameters are optimized,and the following configuration is found accordingly:contraction angle 20°,contraction segment length 6 mm,cylindrical segment diameter 6 mm,cylindrical segment length 12 mm,spread segment length 10 mm,and spread angle 55°.

Incorporating adaptive genomic variation into predictive models for invasion risk assessment

Global climate change is expected to accelerate biological invasions,necessitating accurate risk forecasting and management ***,current invasion risk assessments often overlook adaptive genomic variation,which plays a significant role in the persistence and expansion of invasive *** we used Molgula manhattensis,a highly invasive ascidian,as a model to assess its invasion risks along Chinese coasts under climate *** population genomics analyses,we identified two genetic clusters,the north and south clusters,based on geographic *** predict invasion risks,we employed the gradient forest and species distribution models to calculate genomic offset and species habitat suitability,*** approaches yielded distinct predictions:the gradient forest model suggested a greater genomic offset to future climatic conditions for the north cluster(i.e.,lower invasion risks),while the species distribution model indicated higher future habitat suitability for the same cluster(i.e,higher invasion risks).By integrating these models,we found that the south cluster exhibited minor genome-niche disruptions in the future,indicating higher invasion *** study highlights the complementary roles of genomic offset and habitat suitability in assessing invasion risks under climate ***,incorporating adaptive genomic variation into predictive models can significantly enhance future invasion risk predictions and enable effective management strategies for biological invasions in the future.

As a river with more than 3000 reservoirs in its watershed,the Yellow River has been affected by dams not only on the sediment load,but also on the water ***-sediment regulation scheme(WSRS),which has been carried out annually in the Yellow River since 2002,is a typical human activity affecting river water *** dissolved organic matter(CDOM)in river is susceptible to changes in ecological and environmental conditions as well as human ***,we report variations in dissolved organic carbon concentrations,compositions and sources of CDOM in time series samples in the lower Yellow River during *** addition,a parallel factor fluorescence analysis(PARAFAC)method is applied to identify different fluorescent components in water samples during WRSR,showing four major components including tryptophan-like component(C1),microbial humic-like component(C2),terrestrial humic-like component(C3)and tyrosine-like component(C4).In general,C1 increased after water regulation,while C2 and C3 increased after sediment regulation,indicating that the water and sediment released by the dam have different effects on CDOM *** the impacts of the dam,source of CDOM in the lower Yellow River is mainly autochthonous related to microbial activities,and is regulated by the terrestrial input during WSRS *** resuspension inhibits microbial activities and reduces the production of autochthonous ***,human activities especially WSRS,as exemplified here,significantly alter the quality and quantity of CDOM in the lower Yellow River,affecting CDOM dynamics and biogeochemical processes in the estuarine environment.

Fission-fusion dynamics of a pelagic delphinid in the arctic:the white-beaked dolphin(Lagenorhynchus albirostris)

Delphinids exhibit great variability in their social *** is therefore important to document lesser known species,in extreme changing habitats,to compare and contrast mechanisms driving ***,we describe the first long-term assessment of social structure of white-beaked dolphins(Lagenorhynchus albirostris)using a compiled version of SOCPROG 2.8 and an 11-year photo-identification dataset(2002–2013)collected from whalewatching vessels at 2 sites(Faxaflói and Skjálfandi bays)off *** identified a total of 487 dolphins which are suggested to be part of an open population as shown by the discovery curve obtained analyzing photo-id *** social analyses were restricted to 35 adults which were sighted on≥5 different *** mean residency time of white-beaked dolphins in our 2 study areas was of 95 days(SE=35.63;95%CI:23-171),with the“migration-full interchange”model best describing movements of dolphins in and out of our 2 study *** differentiation in this population was high(Likelihood:S=0.87,SE=0.04;r=0.31,SE=0.03)indicating diverse,non-random social *** associations best fit the model of“casual acquaintances”against the standardized lagged association rates with the majority of white-beaked dolphin associations being short-term,but with a few long-term across *** for preferred companionship,long-term associations are favored over *** this study,associations among white-beaked dolphins are short-term but with desirably long-term associations fitting into a society with fission-fusion *** information expands the latitudinal range for which social structure has been described for oceanic dolphin species.

Regulation of microRNAs(miRNAs)on various biological processes has been a surprising and exciting *** of miRNAs is the first step to comprehensively understand their ***,attempts on global identification and functional verification of miRNAs are very limited in penaeid shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus,an economically important aquatic *** performing an integrated analysis of transcriptomic profile from gastrula embryos of ***,21conserved miRNAs in ***(mja-miRNAs),belonging to 19 miRNA families,were identified and *** the 21 mja-miRNAs,15 miRNAs were successfully verified to be predominantly expressed in gastrula stage,where they displayed dynamic expression patterns compared with those in naupliuin *** on perfect or near-perfect match to target region,120 target genes were predicted at transcriptome-wide ***,gene ontology(GO)classification and metabolic pathway annotation revealed eight targets that were actively involved in developmental *** the predicted miRNA-mRNA pairs,six targets were then randomly selected and experimentally validated by dual luciferase reporter assay,where three pairs were proved with potential targeting ***,to search for conserved miRNAs potentially involved in early development of ***,we combined in silico and experimental methods,which can be applied in other organisms as *** data implied important roles of miRNAs in the early embryonic development and also suggested the presence of complex miRNA-mRNA functional networks in ***.

Natural radionuclides are powerful tools for understanding the sources and fate of suspended particulate matter(SPM).Particulate matter with different particle sizes behaves differently with respect to adsorption and *** analyzed the activi-ties and distribution characteristics of multiple natural radionuclides(238U,226Ra,40K,228Ra,7Be and 210Pbex)on size-fractionated SPM at the Lijin Hydrographic Station(Huanghe or Yellow River)every month over a one-year *** showed that medium silt(16–32µm)was the main *** expected,the activity of each radionuclide decreased with an increase of particle *** examined the sources of SPM with different particle sizes using activity ratios of 226Ra/238U,228Ra/226Ra,40K/238U and 7Be/210Pbex,and concluded that SPM with different particle sizes originated from different *** results indicate that fine SPM(32µm)was mainly derived from resuspension of riverbed *** high runoff periods,the concentration of SPM increased significantly,and the pro-portion of fine particles originating upstream *** occurring radioactive isotopes,especially on size-fractionated par-ticles,are therefore seen as useful tracers to understand the sources and behaviors of riverine particles transported from land to sea.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Shell-Matrix-Protein Genes and Observation of the Shell Microstructure in the Deep-sea Clam Calyptogena marissinica

The deep-sea clam Calyptogena marissinica is widely distributed in the Haima cold seep ecosystem on the northwes-tern slope of the South China sea with low pH values,low temperature and high *** information is available on the biomineralization of this *** this research,we generated a comprehensive transcript dataset of ***’s mantle tissue,and a total of 19821 unigenes were *** shell matrix proteins(SMP)-related genes were *** qPCR results showed that four out of six prismatic matrix genes(MSP2,MSP5,prisilkin-39,and shematrin),four out of the six nacreous matrix genes(perlucin,pif,pif97,and papilin),and two extrapallial fluid proteins(SPARC and calmodulin)were significantly expressed in the *** the nacreous and the prismatic layers are chrysanthemum-shaped,which are stacked on the top of each other to form a laminated nacreous *** alignment and phylogenetic analysis of MSP-5,Prisilkin-39,Perlucin,and Pif homologues showed that some amino acids of *** that differed from those detected in other molluscs may cause the different shape of the nacreous and prismatic layers,but do not lead to a change in the species’evolutionary *** results indicated the conservation of the functions of SMP-related genes in ***,and the specific shape of the prismatic and nacreous layers of this deep-sea mollusc,which will contribute to the research on the molecular regulation mechanisms of biomineralization in *** and provide a new perspective to investigate biomineralization in deep-sea clams in general.
