Microgrids-as-a-service for Rural Electrification in Sub-Saharan Africa

The majority of the population on the African continent is unable to access basic electricity services,this despite the abundance of renewable energy sources(RESs).The inability to adequately tap into these RESs has led to the continued dependence on non-renewable energy sources such as coal for electricity generation,and kerosene for cooking and lighting,the resulting use of which is poor health *** use of Microgrids(MGs)is being extensively researched as a feasible means of tackling the challenge of electrification,especially in rural and remote *** times have seen an increasing number of research works focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa(SSA),which is one of the regions with the lowest electrification rates in the *** provide the most suitable means to integrate RESs into the electricity generation process,paving the way towards clean energy for the African *** paper presents a review of recent literature on the usage of MG technology for rural electrification,with a specific focus on the applicability of MGs in the SSA *** paper additionally presents the challenges and opportunities to *** findings indicate that SSA has already begun the transition towards clean energy via implementation of RES-based ***,two resonating challenges in the literature are adequate support via policy,and proper planning of project *** two major barriers are needed to be overcome in order to fully utilize MGs for rural electrification in *** key methodology derived from this study is that any effort towards rural electrification requires a sufficient amount of investigation,incorporating both the technological and socio-economic aspects into a suitable design for the target location.

Impacts of 1.5℃ and 2.0℃ Global Warming on Runoff of Three Inland Rivers in the Hexi Corridor, Northwest China

Basin-scale projections of river runoff at different warming levels provide useful information for climate change adaptation. In this study, we investigated changes in the projected climate and simulated runoff under 1.5℃ and 2.0℃ global warming of three inland rivers in the Hexi Corridor: the Shiyang River(SYR), the Heihe River(HHR),and the Shule River(SLR). The change in climate was projected based on five global climate models(GCMs) under three representative concentration pathways(RCPs), and the change in runoff was simulated based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT) hydrological model. Furthermore, the uncertainties in projected climate change and simulated runoff constrained by the GCMs and RCPs were quantified. The results indicate that, compared with the baseline period(1976–2005), there is a 1.42–1.54℃ increase in annual air temperature and 4%–12% increase in annual mean precipitation in the three river basins under 1.5℃ global warming, while there is a 2.09–2.36℃ increase in annual air temperature and 5%–11% increase in annual mean precipitation under 2.0℃ global warming. The simulated annual runoff of the SYR decreases by 4% under 1.5℃ global warming, that of the HHR decreases by 3% and 4%, while that of the SLR increases considerably by 10% and 11% under 1.5℃ and 2.0℃ global warming, respectively. The additional 0.5℃ global warming results in an annual air temperature increase of 0.67–0.82℃, a change of -1% to 1% in annual mean precipitation, and a change of -1% to 5% in simulated runoff. The simulated annual runoff has greater uncertainty. The simulations indicate substantial and consistent warming in autumn and winter in the three basins, relatively drier summer and autumn in the SYR and HHR basins, and a relatively drier autumn in the SLR basin. The simulated monthly runoff shows more complex changes with large uncertainties constrained mainly by the GCMs.

Popularity prediction of online video is widely used in many different scenarios. It can not only help video service providers to schedule video web sites,but also bring considerable profits on investment for both providers and advertisers if popularity of online video is predicted accurately. However, online video popularity prediction still cannot have a satisfactory result, due to the complexity of many crucial factors especially of video distribution network. In this article, we extract seven factors from huge amounts of data about user behavior,establishing a new multiple linear regression model to initially predict online video popularity. After that, a multichannel video popularity dynamic scheduling model is proposed to schedule videos on which channel and what time to be broadcast, according to its popularity predicted by multiple linear regression model, ensuring that maximum the sum value of online video popularity of each channel. Experimental results on dataset obtained from Sohu Video, a video service provider in China, and real-world video flow in Sohu Video demonstrate that the proposed model is robust and has promising performance in predicting online video popularity, which is helpful for video service providers to schedule videos on web sites effectively in the future.

Synthesis and characterization of copolymers of poly(m-xylylene adipamide) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) oligomers by melt copolycondensation

Poly（m-xylylene adipamide）/poly（ethylene terephthalate）（MXD6/PET） copolymers are synthesized by melt copolycondensation with 1–5 wt% low molecular weight PET oligomers into the MXD6 oligomers at 260 ℃.FR-IR and1 H NMR analysis results indicate that the interchange reaction has occurred between MXD6 oligomers and PET oligomers. The thermal behavior of copolymers shows that the melting temperature of MXD6/PET copolymers decreases with the increasing of amount of PET oligomers, while the crystallization temperature accordingly increases. And the equilibrium temperature Tm0 is evaluated to be 251.8 ℃ for the copolymers with5 wt% PET oligomer adding, which is very close to that of neat MXD6. The tensile and impact strength of MXD6/PET copolymers are significantly improved than that of pure MXD6 by mechanical properties test, and the microfibril structure in the impact fracture sample＇s surface reveals the feature of ductile fracture.

VARIABILITY IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC SUBTROPICAL HIGH AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH SEA TEMPERATURE VARIATION CONSIDERING THE BACKGROUND OF CLIMATE WARMING OVER THE PAST 60 YEARS

By adopting characteristic index data for the Western Pacific Subtropical High(WPSH) from the National Climate Center of China, U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) sea surface temperature(SST) data, we studied the WPSH variability considering the background of climate warming by using a Gaussian filter, moving averages, correlation analysis, and synthetic analysis. Our results show that with climate warming over the past 60 years, significant changes in the WPSH include its enlarged area, strengthened intensity,westward extended ridge point and southward expanded southern boundary, as well as enhanced interannual fluctuations in all these indices. The western ridge point of the WPSH consistently varies with temperature changes in the Northern Hemisphere, but the location of the ridgeline varies independently. The intensity and area of the WPSH were both significantly increased in the late 1980 s. Specifically, the western ridge point started to significantly extend westward in the early 1990 s, and the associated interannual variability had a significant increase in the late 1990 s; in addition, the ridgeline was swaying along the north-south-north direction, and the corresponding variability was also greatly enhanced in the late 1990 s. With climate warming, the SST increase becomes more weakly correlated with the WPSH intensity enhancement but more strongly correlated with the westward extension of the ridge point in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific Ocean in winter, corresponding to an expanding WPSH in space. In the northern Pacific in winter, the SST decrease has a weaker correlation with the southerly location of the ridgeline but also a stronger correlation with the westward extension of the ridge point. Atomistic study on the microscopic mechanism of grain boundary embrittlement induced by small dense helium bubbles in iron

The helium bubbles induced by 14 MeV neutron irradiation can cause intergranular fractures in reduced activation ferritic martensitic steel,which is a candidate structural material for fusion *** order to elucidate the susceptibility of different grain boundaries(GBs)to helium-induced embrittlement,the tensile fracture processes of 10 types of GBs with and without helium bubbles in body-centered cubic(bcc)iron at the relevant service temperature of 600 K were investigated via molecular dynamics *** results indicate that in the absence of helium bubbles,the GBs studied here can be classified into two distinct categories:brittle GBs and ductile *** atomic scale analysis shows that the plastic deformation of ductile GB at high temperatures originates from complex plastic deformation mechanisms,including the Bain/Burgers path phase transition and deformation twinning,in which the Bain path phase transition is the most dominant plastic deformation ***,the presence of helium bubbles severely inhibits the plastic deformation channels of the GBs,resulting in a significant decrease in elongation at *** bubble-decorated GBs,the ultimate tensile strength increases with the increase in the misorientation ***,the coherent twin boundary∑3{112}was found to maintain relatively high fracture strength and maximum failure strain under the influence of helium bubbles.

The Platinum(Pt)-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) while suffering from poor stability due to the weak interaction between the carbon support and ***,a molybdenum-doped titanium dioxide(Ti_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)O_(2)) supported low-Pt electrocatalyst with stronger interaction between catalyst and support is applied to tune the electrocatalytic performance of *** Ti_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)O_(2) support can not only tolerate the corrosion environment in the catalytic system,but also generate strong metal-support inte raction(SMSI) between the oxide and catalyst.A facile solvothermal method is used to prepareTi_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)O_(2) as support to anchor Pt *** 5% Pt supported on Ti_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)O_(2) catalyst exhibits 4.4-fold mass activity(MA) at an overpotential of 50 mV and higher stability than 20% Pt/C with only 1/4 Pt *** SMSI between the Ti_(0.9)Mo_(0.1)O_(2) and Pt prevents the Pt aggregation to achieve excellent stability,and hydrogen spillover effect in the interface between Pt and support benefits the hydrogen production *** work presents a novel sight for the fabrication and design of oxide supported catalysts in various catalytic system by reasonably employing support effect.

A reliable and inexpensive pretreatment procedure in the determination ofβ2-agonists in pork was *** procedure used a nanocomposite of multiwalled carbon nanotubes(CNTs)functionalized with graphene(rGO)as the reversed dispersive *** was analyzed after purification by highperformance liquid chromatography,the extraction time and the properties of the nanocomposite were *** optimized conditions,present method has linear response over concentration range of 0.5–50 ng/mL in pork samples with a satisfactory detection limit close to 0.1 ng/*** precisions of the current method(coefficient of variation)are lower than 5%,while recoveries are more than 98.3%.The nanocomposite exhibited high adsorptivity,long-term storage stability,satisfactory anti-interfering activity and high selectivity toward2-agonists compared with those of rGO and CNTs.
