THE EFFECT OF EQUATORIAL CENTRAL PACIFIC SSTAS ON THE INTERANNUAL VARIATION OF PRECIPITATION OVER SOUTHWEST CHINA DURING SPRING

The interannual variations of rainfall over southwest China(SWC) during spring and its relationship with sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs) in the Pacific are analyzed, based on monthly mean precipitation data from 26 stations in SWC between 1961 and 2010, NCEP/NCAR re-analysis data, and Hadley global SST data. Sensitivity tests are conducted to assess the response of precipitation in SWC to SSTAs over two key oceanic domains, using the global atmospheric circulation model ECHAM5. The interannual variation of rainfall over SWC in spring is very *** are strong negative(positive) correlation coefficients between the anomalous precipitation over SWC and SSTAs over the equatorial central Pacific(the mid-latitude Pacific) during spring. Numerical simulations show that local rainfall in the northwest of the equatorial central Pacific is suppressed, and a subtropical anticyclone circulation anomaly is produced, while a cyclonic circulation anomaly in the mid-latitude western Pacific occurs, when the equatorial Pacific SSTAs are in a cold phase in spring. Anomalous northerly winds appear in the northeastern part of SWC in the lower troposphere. Precipitation increases over the Maritime Continent of the western equatorial Pacific, while a cyclonic circulation anomaly appears in the northwest of the western equatorial Pacific. A trough over the Bay of Bengal enhances the southerly flow in the south of SWC. The trough also enhances the transport of moisture to SWC. The warm moisture intersects with anomalous cold air over the northeast of SWC, and so precipitation increases during spring. On the interannual time scale, the impacts of the mid-latitude Pacific SSTAs on rainfall in SWC during spring are not significant, because the mid-latitude Pacific SSTAs are affected by the equatorial central Pacific SSTAs; that is,the mid-latitude Pacific SSTAs are a feedback to the circulation anomaly caused by the equatorial central Pacific SSTAs.

Hierarchical FeP nanoarray films composed of FeP nanopetals were successfully synthesized via a bio-inspired hydrothermal route followed by phosphorization. Glycerol as a crystal growth modifier, plays a significant role in controlling the morphology and structure of the FeO（OH） precursor during the biomineralization process, while the following transfer and pseudomorphic transformation of the FeO（OH） film successfully give rise to the FeP array film. The as-prepared FeP film electrodes exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） performance over a wide pH range. Theoretical calculations reveal that the mixed P/Fe termination in the FeP film is responsible for the high catalytic activity of the nanostructured electrodes. This new insight will promote further explorations of efficient metal phosphoride-based catalysts for the HER. More importantly, this study bridges the gap between biological and inorganic self-assembling nanosystems and may open up a new avenue for the preparation of functional nanostructures with application in energy devices.

The development of functional composites with excellent thermal management capabilities and electro-magnetic interference(EMI)shielding has become extremely urgent for keeping up with the continuous improvement of the operating speed and efficiency for electronic *** this study,the biolog-ical wood-derived porous carbon(WPC)was determined as the supporting material to encapsulating polyethylene glycol(PEG),and a series of WPC/PEG/Fe_(3)O_(4) phase change composites(PCCs)with excel-lent shape stability,EMI shielding and thermal management capabilities were prepared via a simple vac-uum impregnation *** Fe_(3)O_(4) magnetic particles modified PCCs have greatly improved the EMI shielding effectiveness(SE).The EMI SE of WP-4(7.5 wt.% Fe_(3)O_(4) in PEG)can be up to 55.08 dB between 8.2−12.4 GHz,however,the WP-0 without Fe_(3)O_(4) addition is only 40.08 ***,the absorption ratio of electromagnetic waves(EMW)has also increased from 75.02%(WP-0)to 85.56%(WP-4),which effectively prevents secondary *** addition,after wrapping a thin layer of polydimethylsiloxane resin(PDMS),the obtained WP-4 can maintain a high heat storage capacity(109.52 J/g)and good wa-ter *** short,the prepared WPC/PEG/Fe_(3)O_(4) PCCs have great potential application value in the thermal management and electromagnetic shielding requirements for electronic devices.

Variation Characteristics of Regional Synchronous Wind in Hami,Xinjiang of Northwest China

From several towers in Hami, Xinjiang of Northwest China, built by the national wind power resources professional observation network, we selected three towers with synchronous 10-min average wind speed data for one year（May 2011-April 2012） under strict quality control. The towers are located where large-scale wind power development is projected. We analyzed the frequency and variation of extreme wind speed at low wind condition（LWC）, rated wind condition（RWC）, and cut-out wind condition（CWC）, which may significantly impact the electric power grid configuration in large-scale wind power development. The correlation between duration and frequency of LWC/RWC/CWC is obtained. Major findings are： 1） The frequency of CWC is the lowest among all conditions, its synchronous rate at all three towers tends to be zero, and the frequency of LWC is always greater than that of RWC. 2） Among the three towers, the synchronous rate of RWC steadily increases with height, and LWC differs little between different levels. The synchronous rate of LWC concentrates in winter, while that of RWC mainly occurs in spring and *** variation of LWC/RWC during the entire year is significantly different. 3） During the study year,the longest durations of synchronous LWC and RWC among the three towers are up to 640 and 700 min,respectively. The duration and frequency of LWC/RWC can be quantitatively well described by a logarithmic function. Consequently, the synchronous rates of LWC and RWC over any duration in the region can be easily calculated by using the fitting function equation from observed data. These results are of value to the planning of large-scale wind power transmission and grid dispatching in this area.

Identification, through transcriptome analysis, of transcription factors that regulate anthocyanin biosynthesis in different parts of red-fleshed apple 'May' fruit

Anthocyanins, a class of flavonoid compounds that provide pigmentation to plant organs, are beneficial components of the human diet and there is an interest in understanding the regulation of their formation in crop plants. The apple cultivar ‘May’ represents an excellent model for the study of anthocyanin metabolism due to the spatial color pattern of its flesh, which transitions sequentially from red to white to red again,from the outside to the inside of the apple fruit. To screen the transcription factors involved in the anthocyanin pathway, transcriptomes from differently colored sections of ‘May’ fruits were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) database was used to analyse the gene expression data. The results suggested differentially expressed genes(DEGs) that are related to phytohormones are involved in regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. K-means clustering analysis revealed 167 common DEGs between different sections of fruit with the same expression pattern as candidates for regulating anthocyanin synthesis. Further analysis showed that nine of the 167 DEGs were annotated as transcription factors and quantitative real time PCR(qRT-PCR) confirmed that their expression was obviously higher in red regions of the fruit, consistent with their roles as hub genes that regulate anthocyanin synthesis. This study provides valuable results for future studies of anthocyanin synthesis in apple fruit.

A modified stochastic model for LS+AR hybrid method and its application in polar motion short-term prediction

Short-term(up to 30 days)predictions of Earth Rotation Parameters(ERPs)such as Polar Motion(PM:PMX and PMY)play an essential role in real-time applications related to high-precision reference frame ***,least squares(LS)+auto-regressive(AR)hybrid method is one of the main techniques of PM ***,the weighted LS+AR hybrid method performs well for PM short-term ***,the corresponding covariance information of LS fitting residuals deserves further exploration in the AR *** this study,we have derived a modified stochastic model for the LS+AR hybrid method,namely the weighted LS+weighted AR hybrid *** using the PM data products of IERS EOP 14 C04,the numerical results indicate that for PM short-term forecasting,the proposed weighted LS+weighted AR hybrid method shows an advantage over both the LS+AR hybrid method and the weighted LS+AR hybrid *** to the mean absolute errors(MAEs)of PMX/PMY sho rt-term prediction of the LS+AR hybrid method and the weighted LS+AR hybrid method,the weighted LS+weighted AR hybrid method shows average improvements of 6.61%/12.08%and 0.24%/11.65%,***,for the slopes of the linear regression lines fitted to the errors of each method,the growth of the prediction error of the proposed method is slower than that of the other two methods.

Enhanced thermal conductivity and microwave dielectric properties by mesostructural design of multiphase nanocomposite

Next-generation packaging materials are expected to have higher thermal conductivity,because the heat accumulated in high-performance electronic equipment should be removed to increase the service life of the *** the same time,the dielectric loss of the material needs to be reduced to lessen signal delay and attenuation,especially for the applications under high *** this work,we introduce nano-silicon carbide(SiC)and carbon nanotubes(CNTs)into the polystyrene(PS)and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)blends *** design of two-way migration at the interface of CNTs and SiC nanoparticles is realized through the masterbatch method and processing technology *** a result,the thermal conductivity is successfully increased up to 75%.Meanwhile,compared to the CNTs single-phase migration system,it effectively reduces the dielectric loss of the nanocomposite and optimizes the electrical *** work has significant practical application value in the design of electronic device substrates and packaging materials,and provides an innovative methodology for the mesostructure design of multiphase nanocomposites.

The multi-body flexible morphing airfoil can improve the aerodynamic characteristics based on different flight missions *** researches have focused on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of flexible wings under passive ***,the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics with the fluid-structure interaction effects in the multi-body active actuation process of morphing airfoil deserve further *** this paper,a fluid-structure coupled simulation method for multi-body flexible morphing airfoil with active actuation subsystem was investigated,and the aerodynamic characteristics during deformation were compared with different skin flexibility,flow field environment,actuation mode and actuation *** numerical results show that for the steady aerodynamic,the skin flexibility can improve the stability *** the unsteady process,the change trend of the transient lift coefficient and pitching moment are consistent with those of the active drive characteristics,while the instantaneous lift-drag ratio coefficient is greatly affected by the driving mode and can be improved by increasing the driving duration.

Estimation of permafrost thermal behavior using Fourier series model

Permafrost,being an important component of the cryosphere,is sensitive to climate ***,it is necessary to investigate the change of temperature within *** this study,we proposed a Fourier series model derived from the conduction equation to simulate permafrost thermal behavior over a *** boundary condition was represented by the Fourier series and the geothermal *** initial condition was represented as a linear function relative to the geothermal gradient.A comparative study of the different models(sinusoidal model,Fourier series model,and the proposed model)was *** collected from the northern Da Xing’anling Mountains,Northeast China,were applied for parameterization and validation for these *** models were compared with daily mean ground temperature from the shallow permafrost layer and annual mean ground temperature from the bottom permafrost layer,*** performance was assessed using three coefficients of accuracy,i.e.,the mean bias error,the root mean square error,and the coefficient of *** comparison results showed that the proposed model was accurate enough to simulate temperature variation in both the shallow and bottom permafrost layer as compared with the other two Fourier series models(sinusoidal model and Fourier model).The proposed model expanded on a previous Fourier series model for which the initial and bottom boundary conditions were restricted to being constant.
