Evaluating implicit gender bias at Canadian otolaryngology meetings through use of professional title

A remote sensing-based agricultural drought indicator and its implementation over a semi-arid region, Jordan

The objective of the study was to develop a remote sensing （i.e., Landsat-8 and MODIS）-based agricultural drought indicator （ADI） at 30-m spatial resolution and 8-day temporal resolution and also to evaluate its performance over a heterogeneous agriculture dominant semi-arid region in Jordan. Firstly, we used principal component analysis （PCA） to evaluate the correlations among six commonly used remote sensing-derived agricultural drought related variables. The variables included normalized difference water index （NDWI）, normalized difference vegetation index （NDVI）, visible and shortwave drought index （VSDI）, normalized multiband drought index （NMDI）, moisture stress index （MSI）, and land surface temperature （LST）. Secondly, we integrated the relatively less correlated variables （that were found to be NDWI, VSDI, and LST） to generate four agricultural drought categories/conditions （i.e., wet, mild drought, moderate drought, and severe drought）. Finally, we evaluated the ADI maps against a set of 8-day ground-based standardized precipitation index values （i.e., SPI-I, SPI-2, ..., SPLS） by use of confusion matrices and observed the best results for SPI-4 （i.e., overall accuracy and Kappa-values were 83% and 76%, respectively） and SPI-5 （i.e., overall accuracy and Kappa-values were 85% and 78%, respectively）. The results demonstrated that the method would be valuable for monitoring agricultural drought conditions in semi-arid regions at both a reasonably high spatial resolution （i.e., 30-m） and a short time period （i.e., 8-day）.

The properties of hydrogen atoms in a nano-diamond grain surrounded by an amorphous carbon shell are studied with Tight Binding computer *** samples model nano-diamond grains,of a few nanometers in size,that nucleate within an amorphous carbon matrix,as observed in deposition from a hydrocarbon rich *** calculations show that the average hydrogen interstitial formation energy in the amorphous region is lower than in the nano-diamond core,therefore hydrogen interstitial sites in the in the amorphous region are more stable than in the nano-diamond *** formation energy difference is the driving force for the diffusion of hydrogen atoms from nano-diamond grains into amorphous carbon *** energy well was observed on the amorphous side of the nano-diamond amorphous carbon interface:hydrogen atoms are expected to be trapped *** scenario agrees with experimental results which show that hydrogen retention of diamond films increases with decreasing grain size,and suggest that hydrogen is bonded and trapped in nano-diamond grain boundaries and on internal grain surfaces.

The Stevia Rebaudiana Plant as Natural Sweetener with Antioxidant Properties

The worldwide use of Stevia rebaudiane as substitute sweetener for sugar, increases every year. Stevia rebaudiane is not involved in the insulin mechanism and as so has no calories. This makes Stevia rebaudiane also a natural substitute for the more common synthetic substitutes for sugar. Various studies show that the plant Stevia rebaudiane contains substances with properties of antioxidant reagent, and as such can prevent antioxidation damage to DNA. [1] In this work protocols for extraction are developed and antioxidating activity tested. The aim was to find optimal conditions for the process, so the antioxidants in the Stevia plant were preserved. Methods used for testing： Redox-titrations and spectrophothometric methods. In all results Vitamin C was used as reference for the antioxidation activity. The results show that the Stevia rebaudiane plant is active as an antioxidant reagent; and that the extent of the antioxidant activity depends on the solvent and on the conditions of the extraction process. In addition there was an attend to measure sweetness of the Stevia rebaudiane plant extract as function of the extraction process.

Predicting responses to platin chemotherapy agents with biochemically-inspired machine learning

The conversion efficiencies reported for Tin(Sn)halide-based perovskite solar cells(PSCs)fall a large gap behind those of lead halide-based PSCs,mainly because of poor film quality of the *** we report an efficient strategy based on a simple secondary crystallization growth(SCG)technique to improve film quality for tin halide-based PSCs by applying a series of functional amine chlorides on the perovskite *** were discovered to enhance the film crystallinity and suppress the oxidation of Sn^(2+)remarkably,hence reduce trap state density and non-irradiative recombination in the absorber ***,the SCG film holds the band levels matching better with carrier transport layers and herein favoring charge extraction at the device ***,a champion device efficiency of 8.07% was achieved alo ng with significant enhancements in VOC and JSC,in contrast to 5.35% of the control device ***,the SCG film-based devices also exhibit superior stability comparing with the control *** work explicitly paves a novel and general strategy for developing high performance lead-free PSCs.

Benzene degradation in waste gas by photolysis and photolysis-ozonation： experiments and modeling

The degradation of benzene, a carcinogenic air pollutant, was studied in a gas-phase photochemical reactor with an amalgam lamp emitting ultraviolet light at 185 and 254 nm. Efficient benzene degradation （〉70%） was possible for benzene mass flow rates of up to 1.5 ***1. Adding ozone allowed benzene mass flow rates of up to 5 m ***-1 tobe treated with the same efficiency. In terms of energy consumption, ozone doubles the efficiency of the process. A comprenenslve mecnanisnc simulation model was developed incorporating a chemical kinetics model （62 reactions involving 47 chemical species）, a material balance model incorporating diffusion and flow, a flow velocity model,and a light field model. The model successfully predicted the efficiency of the reactor, generally within 20%, which indicates that the model is sound, and can be used for feasibility studies. The prediction of the reactor efficiency in the presence of ozone was less successful, with systematically overestimated efficiency. Condensation of reaction products in the reactor is thought to be the mare cause of model inaccuracy. Both experimental .data and model predictions show that there is a synergistic effect between ozonation and ultraviolet degradation.

Dystrophic calcification and heterotopic ossification in fibrocartilaginous tissues of the spine in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis(DISH)

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis(DISH) is a prevalent noninflammatory spondyloarthropathy characterized by ectopic mineral formation along the anterolateral aspect of the vertebral column, yet little is known about its underlying pathogenesis. Our objective was to evaluate the histopathological features and composition of ectopic mineral within spinal tissues affected by DISH in humans. Thoracic spine segments from six embalmed cadaveric donors(one female and five males;median age 82 years)meeting the radiographic diagnostic criteria for DISH were evaluated using radiological, histological, and physical analyses. Overall,the histological features of ectopic mineralization at individual motion segments were heterogeneous, including regions of heterotopic ossification and dystrophic calcification. Heterotopic ossifications were characterized by woven and lamellar bone,multifocal areas of metaplastic cartilage, and bony bridges along the anterior aspect of the intervertebral disc space. Dystrophic calcifications were characterized by an amorphous appearance, a high content of calcium and phosphorus, an X-ray diffraction pattern matching that of hydroxyapatite, and radiodensities exceeding that of cortical bone. Dystrophic calcifications were found within the anterior longitudinal ligament and annulus fibrosus in motion segments both meeting and not meeting the radiographic criteria for DISH. In summary, our findings indicate that in DISH, ectopic mineral forms along the anterior aspect of the spine by both heterotopic ossification and dystrophic calcification of fibrocartilaginous tissues. Although both types of ectopic mineralization are captured by current radiographic criteria for DISH, dystrophic calcification may reflect a distinct disease process or an early stage in the pathogenesis of DISH.

Frequency Features Based Fuzzy System for Rotating Machinery Vibration Analysis Using Smartphones Low-Cost MEMS Sensors

Smart devices have become an important entity for many applications in daily life activities. These devices have witnessed a rapid improvement in its technology to fulfill the increasingly diverse usage demands. In the meanwhile, rotating machinery vibration analysis based on low-cost sensors has gained a considerable attraction over the last few years. For a long time, the vibration analysis of machines has been accepted as an effective solution to detect and prevent failures in complex systems to avoid the sudden malfunction. The objective of this work is to use MEMS accelerometer measurements to monitor the different level of vibration of a machine. This work presents a new technique for rotating machinery vibration analysis. It uses Fast Fourier Transformation as a feature extraction algorithm and Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) as the classifier algorithm. A smartphone accelerometer is used to collect the data from the vibrating machine. The performance of the proposed technique is tested using data from different vibration resources at a different speed of operations. The results are discussed to illustrate the various vibration levels.

Health Impact of Pesticides on Residents and Horticultural Workers in the Lake Naivasha Region, Kenya

The horticultural sector has undergone tremendous growth in Kenya and is now the second largest foreign income earning sector in the country. Lake Naivasha is the hub of large scale horticultural farming in Kenya. This growth coupled with increased use of pesticides, may increase the possibility of pesticide exposure and its associated risks to workers and residents of the region. The purpose of this study was to assess the symptoms commonly experienced by residents of Naivasha town and their possible association to pesticide exposure. Purposive sampling of residents from Kamere, Kwa Muia, Kioto and Karagita was performed, as these residential areas have significant numbers of flower farm workers. By random selection, a total of 801 community members were recruited to participate in the study and data was collected by completing the prepared questionnaire and from clinical examinations. Results indicate that several residents exhibited respiratory;skin, joints and bones;and nervous system symptoms. We found a higher frequency of symptoms among planters, weeders, harvesters than in sprayers working in horticultural farms. We recommend training to planters, weeders, harvesters who are mainly women (61.6%) in this study concerning pesticide use as do sprayers;and second, longer reentry times between the last spraying of pesticide and entry of these workers is warranted, particularly in greenhouses. In this regard, reentry times for greenhouses and fields established for specific pesticides in Europe, North America, Japan or Australia should be adapted by Kenya, and these guidelines enforced by the Government of Kenya to reduce exposure to pesticides within this vulnerable work group. These workers should also use protective clothing including gloves and masks at all times while handling chemicals or recently sprayed plants or flowers.
