Major historical events often trigger the rapid flourishing of a few lineages,which in turn shape established biodiversity patterns.How did this process occur and develop?This study provides a window into this issue.The endemic East Asian carps(EEAC)dominated the ichthyofauna of East Asia and exhibited a high degree of adaptation to monsoonal river-lake ecosystems.A series of evidence,including ecogeography,phylogenetics,and macroevolution,suggests that the EEAC is a lineage that arose with the East Asian monsoon and thrived intimately with subsequent monsoon activities.We further deduce the evolution of the EEAC and find that a range of historical events in the monsoon setting(e.g.,marine transgression and regression and glacial-interglacial cycle)have further reshaped the distribution patterns of EEAC’s members.Comparative genomics analyses reveal that introgressions during the initial period of EEAC radiation and innovations in the regulation of the brain and nervous system may have aided their adaptation to river-lake ecosystems in a monsoon setting,which boosted radiation.Overall,this study strengthens knowledge of the evolutionary patterns of freshwater fishes in East Asia and provides a model case for understanding the impact of major historical events on the evolution of biota.

A Century of Spinosaurs-A Review and Revision of the Spinosauridae with Comments on Their Ecology

The spinosaurids represent an enigmatic and highly unusual form of large tetanuran theropods that were first identified in 1915. A recent flurry of discoveries and taxonomic revisions of this important and interesting clade has added greatly to our knowledge. Spinosaur body fossils are however generally rare and most species are known from only limited skeletal remains. Their unusual anatomical adaptations to the skull, limbs and axial column all differ from other large theropods and point to an unusual ecological niche and a lifestyle intimately linked to water.

The Specimen Data Refinery:A Canonical Workflow Framework and FAIR Digital Object Approach to Speeding up Digital Mobilisation of natural history Collections

A key limiting factor in organising and using information from physical specimens curated in natural science collections is making that information computable,with institutional digitization tending to focus more on imaging the specimens themselves than on efficiently capturing computable data about them.Label data are traditionally manually transcribed today with high cost and low throughput,rendering such a task constrained for many collection-holding institutions at current funding levels.We show how computer vision,optical character recognition,handwriting recognition,named entity recognition and language translation technologies can be implemented into canonical workflow component libraries with findable,accessible,interoperable,and reusable(FAIR)characteristics.These libraries are being developed in a cloudbased workflow plaform-the Specimen Data Refinery'(SDR)-founded on Galaxy workflow engine,Common Workflow Language,Research Object Crates(RO-Crate)and WorkflowHub technologies.The SDR can be applied to specimens'labels and other artefacts,offering the prospect of greatly accelerated and more accurate data capture in computable form.Two kinds of FAIR Digital Objects(FDO)are created by packaging outputs of SDR workflows and workflow components as digital objects with metadata,a persistent identifier,and a specific type definition.The first kind of FDO are computable Digital Specimen(DS)objects that can be consumed/produced by workflows,and other applications.A single DS is the input data structure submitted to a workflow that is modified by each workflow component in turn to produce a refined DS at the end.The Specimen Data Refinery provides a library of such components that can be used individually,or in series.To cofunction,each library component describes the fields it requires from the DS and the fields it will in turn populate or enrich.The second kind of FDO,RO-Crates gather and archive the diverse set of digital and real-world resources,configurations,and actions(the provenance)contributing to a unit

Yuzhou Flora——A hidden gem of the Middle and Late Cathaysian Flora

The Yuzhou Flora of the southern North China Platform possesses the typical regional features of the Middle and Late Cathaysian Flora.For a long time during the Permian,this area was located on shoreline marine tidal flats and deltas at low latitudes with a warm and humid climate.Consequently,many successive layers with abundant well-preserved plant fossils and a complete evolutionary sequence were developed.This is a unique and ideal place to study the Middle and Late Cathaysian Flora.We have recognized 111 genera and 307 species from this flora.The rapid morphological evolution and uninterrupted stratigraphic succession of Lobatannularia(Sphenophytes) make this group one of the bases for biostratigraphic divisions of the Permian System of the North China Platform.Ninety percent of Pteridophytes belong to the order Marattiales,which are well developed during the early and middle stages of the Yuzhou Flora but experience a sudden decline during the late stage.Ancient Pteridospermatophytes only flourished during the Middle Permian whereas advanced Peltaspermales are extremely well developed at the end of the early Late Permian.Among them Shenzhouphyllum is one of characteristic elements in the late stage of the Yuzhou Flora.The Cycadophytes evolved relatively early in this area and they differentiated and proliferated during the late Middle to early Late Permian.The number of species of Ginkgophytes is small but this group is extremely abundant,especially in the early Late Permian.The Gigantopteridales(preangiosperms) is a very important and unique group in the Yuzhou Flora.Based upon their venation and leaf architecture,this group can be divided into three evolutionary stages,i.e.,appearance and differentiation,first flourishing,and second flourishing and sudden disappearance,which form the basis for biostratigraphic division and correlation of the Permian System of the North China Platform.Based upon the evolutionary trend of venation pattern and leaf architecture,we propose some taxonomic changes at the generic

DEAR EDITOR,The disk-footed bat Eudiscopus denticulus(Osgood,1932)is a rare species in Southeast Asia.During two chiropteran surveys in the summer of 1981 and 2019,eight and three small Myotis-like bats with distinct disk-like hindfeet were collected from Yunnan Province,China,respectively.External,craniodental,and phylogenetic evidence confirmed these specimens as E.denticulus,representing a new genus in China.The complete mitochondrial genome consistently showed robust support for E.denticulus as a basal lineage within Myotinae.The coding patterns and characteristics of its mitochondrial genome were similar to that of other published genomes from Myotis.The echolocation signals of the newly collected individuals were analyzed.The potential distribution range of Eudiscopus in Southeast Asia inferred using the MaxEnt model indicated its potential occurrence along the southern border region of Yunnan,China.

Effects of landscape heterogeneity and breeding habitat diversity on rice frog abundance and body condition in agricultural landscapes of Yangtze River Delta,China

Amphibia ns play a key role in structuring biological assemblages of agricultural landscapes,but they are threatened by global agricultural intensification.Landscape structure is an important variable in flue ncing biodiversity in agricultural la ndscapes.However,in the Yangtze River Delta,where a"farmland-orchard-fishpond"agricultural pattern is common,the effects of landscape construction on anuran populations are unclear.In this study,we examined the effects of agricultural landscape parameters on the abundance and body condition of the rice frog(Fejervarya multistriata),which is a dominant anuran species in farmland in China.Employing a visual encounter method,we surveyed rice frog abundance for 3years across 20 agricultural landscapes.We also calculated the body condition index(BCD of 188 male frog individuals from these agricultural landscapes.Landscape variables,comprising landscape compositional heterogeneity(using the Shannon diversity in dex of all land cover types except buildings and roads),Ian dscape con figurational heterogeneity(using landscape edge density),breeding habitat diversity(using the number of 5 waterbody types available as breeding habitats),and areas of forest were also measured for each 1-km radius landscape.We found that the amount of forest in each agricultural Iandscape had a sign讦icant positive relationship with rice frog abundance,and breeding habitat diversity was positively related to the BCI of male rice frogs.However,body condition was negatively impacted by landscape configurational heterogeneity.Our results suggested the importance of nonagricultural habitats in agricultural landscapes,such as waterbodies and forest,to benefit rice frog population persistenee.

Black soldier fly larvae in broiler diets improve broiler performance and modulate the immune system

Non-conventional feed ingredients are receiving more interest in their ability to increase farming effi-ciency,sustainability and animal performance.The objective of this study was to determine the optimal rate of inclusion level of the full-fat black soldier fly larvae(BSFL)in broiler diets and to evaluate their impact on performance,nutrient digestibility,and the immune system(blood cells and intraepithelial lymphocytes).A total of 400 male day-old Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to 5 treatment groups with 8 replicates each.Five inclusion levels of full-fat BSFL were investigated across starter(0,2.5%,5%,7.5%and 10%),grower and finisher diets(0,5%,10%,15%and 20%).All diets were formulated based on digestible amino acid values according to the Aviagen(2016)recommendations.A polynomial regression at different degrees was performed to analyse broiler performance parameters(body weight,body weight gain,feed intake,and feed conversion ratio),nutrient digestibility,and blood cell count.Intraepithelial lymphocyte population data was analysed performing univariate linear regression.During the entire experimental period(from 2 to 42 d),BSFL inclusion levels decreased the feed conversion ratio by 10%in broilers that received 20%BSFL in their diets(P<0.05).Lymphocytes and white blood cell count decreased linearly by 47.7%and 35.9%,respectively,with up to 20%BSFL inclusion(P<0.001).A 4-fold decrease in CD3+T lymphocytes and a 9.7-fold decrease of CD3+CD8+intestinal cytotoxic T lymphocytes occurred in broilers fed 20%BSFL compared to the control group.These findings suggest that the inclusion of BSFL can improve broiler performance and potentially reduce immune response energy expenditure in birds fed 20%BSFL for 42 d.

Counter-regulatory phosphatases TNAP and NPP1 temporally regulate tooth root cementogenesis

Cementum is critical for anchoring the insertion of periodontal ligament fibers to the tooth root. Several aspects of cementogenesis remain unclear, including differences between acellular cementum and cellular cementum, and between cementum and bone. Biomineralization is regulated by the ratio of inorganic phosphate （Pi） to mineral inhibitor pyrophosphate （PPi）, where local Pi and PPi concentrations are controlled by phosphatases including tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase （TNAP） and ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 （NPP1）. The focus of this study was to define the roles of these phosphatases in cementogenesis. TNAP was associated with earliest cementoblasts near forming acellular and cellular cementum. With loss of TNAP in the Alpl null mouse, acellular cementum was inhibited, while cellular cementum production increased, albeit as hypomineralized cementoid. In contrast, NPP1 was detected in cementoblasts after acellular cementum formation, and at low levels around cellular cementum. Loss of NPP1 in the Enppl null mouse increased acellular cementum, with little effect on cellular cementum. Developmental patterns were recapitulated in a mouse model for acellular cementum regeneration, with early TNAP expression and later NPP1 expression. In vitro, cementoblasts expressed Alpl gene/protein early, whereas Enppl gene/protein expression was significantly induced only under mineralization conditions. These patterns were confirmed in human teeth, including widespread TNAP, and NPP1 restricted to cementoblasts lining acellular cementum. These studies suggest that early TNAP expression creates a low PPi environment promoting acellular cementum initiation, while later NPP1 expression increases PPi, restricting acellular cementum apposition. Alterations in PPi have little effect on cellular cementum formation, though matrix mineralization is affected.

New synonymies and records of the stag-beetle genus Aegus Mac Leay from Chinese fauna(Coleoptera:Lucanidae)

Four new synonyms in the stag-beetle genus Aegus MacLeay from Chinese fauna are proposed and discussed based on their type specimens： A. pichoni Didier 1931, syn. nov. = A. laevicollis Saunders 1854; A. beauchenei Boileau 1902, syn. nov. and A. caprinus Didier, 1928, syn. nov. =A. taurus Boileau, 1899; A. dispar Dider 1931, syn. nov. =A. kuangtungensis Nagel, 1925. A species checklist with fifteen species of this genus from China is given, including two new record species, A. labilis Westwood, 1864 from Xizang and A. coomani Didier, 1926 from Guangxi.

Pair bonds during the annual cycle of a long-distance migrant,the Arctic Tern(Sterna paradisaea)

Background:The extent to which pairs remain together during the annual cycle is a key question in the behav-ioural ecology of migratory birds.While a few species migrate and winter as family units,for most the extent to which breeding partners associate in the non-breeding season is unknown.The Arctic Tern(Sterna paradisaea)has one of the longest migrations of any species,and the aim of this study was to establish whether or not partners remain together after breeding.Methods:Leg-mounted geolocators were fitted to breeding pairs of Arctic Terns nesting on the Farne Islands,North-umberland,UK.The devices were recovered for analysis the following year.Results:Analysis of data for the six pairs which returned the following year showed that partners departed from the colony at different times after breeding and migrated independently to different Antarctic regions.Partners also departed from the Antarctic and turned to the breeding colony independently.One third of the pairs divorced on return.Conclusions:For long-distance migrants reliant on unpredictable foraging opportunities,it may not be viable to remain as pairs away from the breeding colony.Synchrony in arrival times at the breeding colony may maximise the chance of retaining a familiar partner,but could be affected by environmental factors in wintering areas or along migration routes.
