Does social information affect the settlement decisions of resident birds in their second breeding attempt?A case study of the Japanese Tit(Parus minor)

Individuals may gather information about environmental conditions when deciding where to breed in order to maximize their lifetime *** can obtain social information by observing conspecifics and heterospecifics with similar ecological *** studies have shown that birds can rely on social information to select their nest *** location of active nests and the reproductive success of conspecifics and heterospecifics can provide accurate predictions about the quality of the breeding *** short-lived species can facultatively reproduce two and/or more times within a breeding ***,few studies have focused on how multiplebrooding individuals select nest sites for their second breeding *** this study,we use long-term data to test whether the Japanese Tit(Parus minor)can use social information from conspecifics and/or heterospecifics(the Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea,the Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus and the Yellow-rumped Flycatcher Ficedula zanthopygia)to select a nest site for the second breeding *** results showed that the nest boxes occupied by tits on their second breeding attempt tended to be surrounded by more breeding conspecific nests,successful first nests of conspecifics,and fewer failed first nests of conspecifics than the nest boxes that remained unoccupied(the control group).However,the numbers of breeding heterospecific nests,successful heterospecific nests,and failed heterospecific nests did not differ between the nest boxes occupied by tits on their second breeding attempt and the unoccupied nest ***,the tits with local successful breeding experience tended to choose areas with more successful first nests of conspecifics than those without successful breeding ***,we suggest that conspecifics'but not heterospecifics'social information within the same breeding season is the major factor influencing the nest site selection of Japanese Tits during second breeding attempts.

A model for estimating the viscosity of blast furnace slags with optical basicity

Viscosity is an important physical property of blast furnace slags and has a great influence on blast furnace operations. Because of time consumption and difficulties encountered during high temperature experimental measurement, viscosity data are also limited, so a rea-sonable and accurate estimation model is required to provide the data for controlling and optimizing the blast furnace process. In the present study a viscosity model was proposed for blast furnace slags. In the model the activation energy was calculated by the optical basicity cor-rected for cations required for the charge compensation of , and the temperature dependence was described by the Weymann-Frenkel equation. The estimated viscosity values of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2, CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO, and CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO-TiO2 systems fit well with experiment data, with the mean deviation less than 25%.

A driver-pickup probe possesses better sensitivity and flexibility due to individual optimization of a *** is fre-quently observed in an eddy current(EC)array *** this work,a tilted non-coaxial driver-pickup probe above a multilayered conducting plate is analytically modeled with spatial transformation for eddy current nondestructive ***,the core of the formulation is to obtain the projection of magnetic vector potential(MVP)from the driver coil onto the vector along the tilted pickup coil,which is divided into two key *** first step is to make a projection of MVP along the pickup coil onto a horizontal plane,and the second one is to build the relationship between the pr,ojected MVP and the MVP along the driver ***,an analytical model for the case of a layered plate is established with the reflection and transmission theory of electromagnetic *** calculated values from the resulting model indicate good agreement with those from the finite element model(FEM)and experiments,which validates the developed analytical model.

Late Mesoproterozoic igneous rocks in the SW Yangtze Block are important for understanding the role of it in reconstruction of the Rodinia *** the present study,we report new geochronological,geochemical,and Nd-Hf isotopic data for the Cuoke plagioclase amphibolites and granites in the SW Yangtze *** results show that the plagioclase amphibolites and granites have similar late Mesoproterozoic zircon U-Pb ages of 1168-1162 Ma,constituting a bimodal igneous *** plagioclase amphibolites have high and variable TiO2 contents(1.15-4.30 wt.%)and Mg#(34-66)values,similar to the tholeiitic *** are characterized by enrichment in LREEs and LILEs,and have OIB-like affinities with positive Nb and Ta *** plagioclase amphibolites have positive whole-rockεNd(t)(+3.2 to+4.3)and zirconεHf(t)(+4.3 to+10.7)values,indicating that they were derived from an OIB-like asthenospheric mantle *** granites belong to the reduced peralkaline A-type series and have negativeεNd(t)value of-6.0 andεHf(t)values of-5.8 to-13.8,indicating a derivation from the partial melting of ancient mafic lower *** combination with the~1.05-1.02 Ga bimodal igneous assemblage in the SW Yangtze Block,we propose that the Cuoke 1168-1162 Ma igneous rocks were likely formed in a continental rift basin and argue against the existance of Grenvillian Orogen in the SW Yangtze Block during the late Mesoproterozoic.

Polypropylene(PP)scaffolds are the most commonly used biomedical scaffolds despite their disadvan-tages,which include problems with adhesion,infection,and inflammatory ***,we report on the successful development of a facile one-step method to fabricate a series of novel triclosan poly-dopamine polypropylene(TPP)composite scaffolds and thereby effectively improve the biocompatibility and long-term antibacterial properties of PP *** antibacterial triclosan can effectively interact with dopamine during biocompatible polydopamine formation on the PP scaffold by one-step green *** to the sustained release of triclosan from the biocompatible polydopamine coating,a 5mm×5mm sample of TPP-coated scaffold made with a triclosan concentration of 8 mg-mL^(-1)(referredto herein as TPP-8)exhibited a continuous antibacterial effect against both Escherichia coli(***)and Staphylococcus aureus(***)for more than 15d,at maximum antibacterial volumes of 2 and 5mL,*** study establishes a new direction for facile long-term antibacterial studies for medical applications.

Topological representations of crystalline compounds for the machine-learning prediction of materials properties

Accurate theoretical predictions of desired properties of materials play an important role in materials research and *** learning(ML)can accelerate the materials design by building a model from input *** complex datasets,such as those of crystalline compounds,a vital issue is how to construct low-dimensional representations for input crystal structures with chemical *** this work,we introduce an algebraic topology-based method,called atom-specific persistent homology(ASPH),as a unique representation of crystal *** ASPH can capture both pairwise and many-body interactions and reveal the topology-property relationship of a group of atoms at various *** with composition-based attributes,ASPH-based ML model provides a highly accurate prediction of the formation energy calculated by density functional theory(DFT).After training with more than 30,000 different structure types and compositions,our model achieves a mean absolute error of 61 meV/atom in cross-validation,which outperforms previous work such as Voronoi tessellations and Coulomb matrix method using the same ML algorithm and *** results indicate that the proposed topology-based method provides a powerful computational tool for predicting materials properties compared to previous works.

Relationships of surface oxygen vacancies with photoluminescence and photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanoparticles

The ZnO nanoparticles are prepared by a precipitation process, and also are char- acterized by means of the modern testing techniques such as XPS, ESR, SPS and PL. The ac- tivity of the as-prepared ZnO is evaluated in the photocatalytic oxidation of gas phase n-C7H16. The relationships of surface oxygen vacancies (SOV) with photoluminescence (PL) and photo- catalytic performance are discussed in details. The results show that the smaller the particle size, the larger the SOV content, the stronger the PL signal, the higher the photocatalytic activity, in- dicating that the SOV, PL and photocatalytic activity have inherent relationships. This was be- cause of the reasons that the PL signal is attributed to the free and binding excitons resulting from the SOV, while the SOV is favorable for a photocatalytic oxidation reaction since the SOV can easily capture the photoinduced electrons, and the captured electrons had strong interac- tions with the adsorbed oxygen. In addition, the surface states of ZnO nanoparticles, arising from the SOV and oxygen species, are very abundant.
